1 A estas palavras, Holofernes encolerizou-se e disse a Aquior:	1 When the noise of the crowd surrounding the council had subsided, Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, said to Achior, in the presence of the whole throng of coastland peoples, of the Moabites, and of the Ammonite mercenaries:
2 Já que nos predisseste que a nação de Israel será defendida por seu Deus, vou mostrar-te que não há outro deus fora de Nabucodonosor:	2 "Who are you, Achior, to prophesy among us as you have done today, and to tell us not to fight against the Israelites because their God protects them? What god is there beside Nebuchadnezzar? He will send his force and destroy them from the face of the earth. Their God will not save them;
3 quando os tivermos ferido a todos como a um só homem, perecerás tu também com eles pela espada dos assírios, e todo o Israel desaparecerá contigo.	3 but we, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, will strike them down as one man, for they will be unable to withstand the force of our cavalry.
4 Assim aprenderás que Nabucodonosor é o Senhor de toda a terra. A espada de meus soldados entrar-te-á pelos flancos e cairás transpassado no meio dos feridos de Israel; não respirarás mais, senão para ser	4 We will overwhelm them with it, and the mountains shall be drunk with their blood, and their plains filled with their corpses. Not a trace of them shall survive our attack: they shall utterly perish, says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he has spoken, and his words shall not remain unfulfilled.
5 Se crês na verdade de tua profecia, não desanimes; muda a palidez de tua face, se pensas que minhas palavras não se podem realizar.	5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, for saying these things in a moment of perversity you shall not see my face after today, until I have taken revenge on this race of people from Egypt.
6 E para que saibas que terás a mesma sorte que eles, serás desde já associado a esse povo, a fim de sofreres com eles os golpes de minha vingança, quando minha espada infligir-lhes o castigo que merecem.	6 Then at my return, the sword of my army or the spear of my servants will pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their slain.
7 Então Holofernes ordenou aos seus homens que prendessem Aquior e o levassem a Betúlia para entregá-lo nas mãos dos israelitas.	7 My servants will now conduct you to the mountain region, and leave you at one of the towns along the ascent.
8 Os escravos de Holofernes tomaram-no e se foram através da planície. Ao se aproximarem dos montes, porém, saíram contra eles os atiradores de funda,	8 You shall not die till you are destroyed together with them.
9 e eles desviaram-se para os lados da montanha, onde ataram Aquior a uma árvore pelas mãos e pés. Abandonaram-no ali amarrado, e voltaram para o seu senhor.	9 If you still cherish the hope that they will not be taken, then there is no need for you to be downcast. I have spoken, and my words shall not prove false in any respect."
10 Ora, os israelitas que desciam de Betúlia encontraram-no e, soltando-o, levaram-no para a cidade. Puseram-no no meio do povo e perguntaram-lhe o motivo por que os assírios o deixaram amarrado.	10 Then Holofernes ordered the servants who were standing by in his tent to seize Achior, conduct him to Bethulia, and hand him over to the Israelites.
11 (Naquele tempo, Betúlia era governada por Ozias, filho de Mica, da tribo de Simeão, e por Carmi, também chamado Gotoniel).	11 So the servants took him in custody and brought him out of the camp into the plain. From there they led him into the mountain region till they reached the springs below Bethulia.
12 E, estando no meio dos anciãos e em presença de todo o povo, Aquior contou tudo o que tinha respondido quando Holofernes o interrogara, e como a gente de Holofernes quis matá-lo por ter ele falado assim;	12 When the men of the city saw them, they seized their weapons and ran out of the city to the crest of the ridge; and all the slingers blocked the ascent of Holofernes' servants by hurling stones upon them.
13 e como Holofernes, encolerizado, ordenara que ele fosse por esse motivo entregue aos israelitas, a fim de que, após a vitória sobre eles, ele fizesse perecer também Aquior com diversos suplícios, porque ele dissera que o Deus do céu era o defensor de Israel.	13 So they took cover below the mountain, where they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the mountain; then they returned to their lord.
14 Após essa narração de Aquior, todo o povo se prostrou com o rosto por terra em adoração diante do Senhor, e todos, unidos de coração, oraram ao Senhor com gemidos e prantos:	14 The Israelites came down to him from their city, loosed him, and brought him into Bethulia. They haled him before the rulers of the city,
15 Senhor, disseram eles, Deus do céu e da terra, vede o seu orgulho e olhai para a nossa humilhação. Lançai os vossos olhos sobre os vossos fiéis; mostrai que não abandonais aqueles que confiam em vós, mas que	15 who in those days were Uzziah, son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris, son of Gothoniel, and Charmis, son of Melchiel.
16 Acabada a lamentação, e terminada a prece do povo, que durou um dia todo, encorajaram Aquior, dizendo:	16 They then convened all the elders of the city; and all their young men, as well as the women, gathered in haste at the place of assembly. They placed Achior in the center of the throng, and Uzziah questioned him about what had happened.
17 O Deus de nossos pais, cujo poder proclamaste, conceder-te-á a recompensa de veres tu a ruína deles.	17 He replied by giving them an account of what was said in the council of Holofernes, and of all his own words among the Assyrian officers, and of all the boasting threats of Holofernes against the house of Israel.
18 Quando o Senhor nosso Deus tiver livrado os seus servos, que ele esteja também contigo no meio de nós, a fim de que vivas, tu e os teus, conosco, como for do teu agrado.	18 At this the people fell prostrate and worshiped God; and they cried out:
19 Então Ozias, despedida a assembléia, recebeu Aquior em sua casa e ofereceu-lhe uma grande ceia.	19 "Lord, God of heaven, behold their arrogance! Have pity on the lowliness of our people, and look with favor this day on those who are consecrated to you."
20 E foram convidados a ela todos os anciãos, (pois já) tinha terminado o jejum, e comeram juntos alegremente.	20 Then they reassured Achior and praised him highly.
21 Depois foi convocado todo o povo e oraram durante toda a noite no lugar onde estavam reunidos, pedindo socorro ao Deus de Israel.	21 Uzziah brought him from the assembly to his home, where he gave a banquet for the elders. That whole night they called upon the God of Israel for help.
