1 Then David ascended from there, and he lived in very secure places in Engedi.	1 E, come Saulle fu ritornato di dietro a’ Filistei, gli fu rapportato e detto: Ecco, Davide è nel deserto di En-ghedi.
2 And when Saul had returned after pursuing the Philistines, they reported to him, saying, “Behold, David is in the desert of Engedi.”	2 Allora Saulle prese tremila uomini scelti d’infra tutto Israele, e andò per cercar Davide e la sua gente, su per le rupi delle camozze.
3 Therefore, Saul, taking three thousand elect men from all of Israel, traveled in order to search for David and his men, even upon the most broken rocks, which are passable only to mountain goats.	3 E, giunto alle mandre delle pecore, in su la via ov’è una spelonca, Saulle entrò per fare i suoi bisogni naturali; e Davide e la sua gente erano assettati nel fondo della spelonca.
4 And he arrived at the sheepfolds, which presented themselves along the way. And a cave was in that place, which Saul entered, so that he might ease his bowels. But David and his men were hiding in the interior part of the cave.	4 E la gente di Davide gli disse: Ecco il giorno che il Signore ti ha detto: Ecco io ti do il tuo nemico nelle mani, e tu gli farai come ti piacerà. Allora Davide si levò, e pianamente tagliò il lembo dell’ammanto di Saulle.
5 And the servants of David said to him: “Behold the day, about which the Lord said to you, ‘I will deliver your enemy to you, so that you may do to him as it will be pleasing in your eyes.’ ” Then David rose up, and he quietly cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.	5 E, dopo questo, il cuore battè a Davide, perchè egli avea tagliato il lembo dell’ammanto di Saulle.
6 After this, his own heart struck David, because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.	6 E disse alla sua gente: Tolga il Signore da me che io faccia questo al mio signore, all’Unto del Signore, che io gli metta la mano addosso; conciossiachè egli sia l’Unto del Signore.
7 And he said to his men: “May the Lord be gracious to me, lest I do this thing to my lord, the Christ of the Lord, so that I lay my hand upon him. For he is the Christ of the Lord.”	7 E Davide, con parole, stolse da ciò la sua gente, e non le permise di levarsi contro a Saulle. E Saulle, levatosi dalla spelonca, se ne andava a suo cammino.
8 And David restrained his men with his words, and he would not permit them to rise up against Saul. And so Saul, going out of the cave, continued to undertake his journey.	8 E Davide si levò, e uscì fuori della spelonca, e gridò dietro a Saulle, dicendo: O re, mio signore. E Saulle riguardò dietro a sè. E Davide s’inchinò con la faccia verso terra, e si prostese
9 Then David also rose up after him. And departing from the cave, he cried out behind the back of Saul, saying: “My lord, the king!” And Saul looked behind him. And David, bowing himself face down to the ground, reverenced.	9 E Davide disse a Saulle: Perchè attendi alle parole delle genti che dicono: Ecco, Davide procaccia il tuo male?
10 And he said to Saul: “Why do you listen to the words of men who say: ‘David seeks evil against you?’	10 Ecco, pur oggi, gli occhi tuoi veggono che il Signore ti avea oggi dato in mano mia, nella spelonca, ed alcuno parlò di ucciderti; ma la mia mano ti ha risparmiato; ed io ho detto: Io non metterò la mano addosso al mio signore; perciocchè egli è l’Unto del Signore.
11 Behold, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord has delivered you into my hand, in the cave. And I thought that I might kill you. But my eye has spared you. For I said: I will not extend my hand against my lord, for he is the Christ of the Lord.	11 Ora, padre mio, vedi, vedi pure il lembo del tuo ammanto che io ho in mano mia; e poichè, quando io tagliai il lembo del tuo ammanto, non ti uccisi, sappi e vedi che nella mia mano non vi è male, nè misfatto alcuno, e che io non ho peccato contro a te; e pur tu vai a caccia della vita mia, per tormela.
12 Moreover, see and know, O my father, the edge of your cloak in my hand. For though I cut off the top of your cloak, I was not willing to extend my hand against you. Turn your soul and see that there is no evil in my hand, nor any iniquity or sin against you. Yet you lie in wait for my life, so that you may take it away.	12 Il Signore giudichi fra me e te, e il Signore mi vendichi di te; ma io non metterò la mia mano sopra te.
13 May the Lord judge between me and you. And may the Lord vindicate me from you. But my hand will not be against you.	13 Come dice il proverbio degli antichi: L’empietà proceda dagli empi; ma io non metterò la mia mano sopra te.
14 So too, it is said in the ancient proverb, ‘From the impious, impiety will go forth.’ Therefore, my hand will not be upon you.	14 Dietro a cui è uscito il re di Israele? chi vai tu perseguitando? un can morto, una pulce.
15 Whom are you pursuing, O king of Israel? Whom are you pursuing? You are pursuing a dead dog, a single flea.	15 Il Signore adunque sia giudice, e giudichi fra me e te, e vegga e mantenga la mia causa, e mi faccia ragione, riscotendomi dalla tua mano
16 May the Lord be the judge, and may he judge between me and you. And may he see and judge my case, and rescue me from your hand.”	16 E, quando Davide ebbe fornito di dire queste parole a Saulle, Saulle disse: È questa la tua voce, Davide, figliuol mio? E alzò la voce, e pianse.
17 And when David had completed speaking words in this way to Saul, Saul said, “Could this be your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice, and he wept.	17 E disse a Davide: Tu sei più giusto di me; perciocchè tu mi hai renduto bene per male; là dove io ti ho renduto male per bene.
18 And he said to David: “You are more just than I am. For you have distributed good to me, but I have repaid evil to you.	18 E tu mi hai oggi fatto conoscere come tu sei sempre proceduto bene inverso me; conciossiachè il Signore mi avesse messo nelle tue mani; e pur tu non mi hai ucciso.
19 And you have revealed this day the good that you have done for me: how the Lord delivered me into your hand, but you did not kill me.	19 E, se alcuno trovasse il suo nemico, lo lascerebbe egli andare benignamente? Il Signore adunque ti renda del bene in iscambio di ciò che tu mi hai oggi fatto.
20 For who, when he will have found his enemy, will release him along a good path? So may the Lord repay you for this good turn, because you have acted on my behalf this day.	20 Ed ora, ecco, io so che per certo tu regnerai, e che il regno di Israele sarà fermo nelle tue mani.
21 And now I know certainly that you shall be king, and you shall have the kingdom of Israel in your hand.	21 Ora dunque giurami per lo Signore, che tu non distruggerai la mia progenie dopo me, e che tu non isterminerai il mio nome dalla famiglia di mio padre.
22 Swear to me in the Lord that you will not take away my offspring after me, nor take away my name from the house of my father.”	22 E Davide giurò a Saulle. Poi Saulle se ne andò a casa sua. E Davide e la sua gente salirono alla fortezza
23 And David swore to Saul. Therefore, Saul went away to his own house. And David and his men ascended to places that were more secure.
