CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDOUAI-RHEIMS
The Elder to the Elect Lady, and those born of her, whom I love in the truth: and not I alone, but also all those who have known the truth,1 The ancient to the lady Elect, and her children, whom I love in the truth, and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth,
because the truth which dwells in us shall be with us for eternity.2 For the sake of the truth which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
May grace, mercy, and peace be with you from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus, the Son of the Father, in truth and in love.3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus the Son of the Father; in truth and charity.
I was very glad because I discovered some of your sons walking in the truth, just as we received the commandment from the Father.4 I was exceeding glad, that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
And now I petition you, Lady, not as if writing a new commandment to you, but instead that commandment which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another.5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as writing a new commandment to thee, but that which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.
And this is love: that we walk according to his commandments. For this is the commandment that you have heard in the same way from the beginning, and in which you should walk.6 And this is charity, that we walk according to his commandments. For this is the commandment, that, as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in the same:
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has arrived in the flesh. Such a one as this is a deceiver and an antichrist.7 For many seducers are gone out into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh: this is a seducer and an antichrist.
Be cautious for yourselves, lest you lose what you have accomplished, and so that, instead, you may receive a full reward.8 Look to yourselves, that you lose not the things which you have wrought: but that you may receive a full reward.
Everyone who withdraws and does not remain in the doctrine of Christ, does not have God. Whoever remains in the doctrine, such a one as this has both the Father and the Son.9 Whosoever revolteth, and continueth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that continueth in the doctrine, the same hath both the Father and the Son.
If anyone comes to you, and does not bring this doctrine, do not be willing to receive him into the house, and do not speak a greeting to him.10 If any man come to you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into the house nor say to him, God speed you.
For whoever speaks a greeting to him, is speaking with his evil works.11 For he that saith unto him, God speed you, communicateth with his wicked works.
I have much more to write to you, but I am not willing to do so through paper and ink. For I hope that I may be with you in the future, and that I may speak face to face, so that your joy may be full.12 Having more things to write unto you, I would not by paper and ink: for I hope that I shall be with you, and speak face to face: that your joy may be full.
The sons of your Elect Sister greet you.13 The children of thy sister Elect salute thee.
