CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And again, the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. And he delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years.1 The Israelites again offended the LORD, who therefore delivered them into the power of the Philistines for forty years.
Now there was a certain man from Zorah, and of the stock of Dan, whose name was Manoah, having a barren wife.2 There was a certain man from Zorah, of the clan of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. His wife was barren and had borne no children.
And an Angel of the Lord appeared to her, and he said: “You are barren and without children. But you shall conceive and bear a son.3 An angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, "Though you are barren and have had no children, yet you will conceive and bear a son.
Therefore, take care that you do not drink wine or strong drink. Neither shall you eat anything unclean.4 Now, then, be careful to take no wine or strong drink and to eat nothing unclean.
For you shall conceive and bear a son, whose head no razor shall touch. For he shall be a Nazirite of God, from his infancy and from his mother’s womb. And he shall begin to free Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”5 As for the son you will conceive and bear, no razor shall touch his head, for this boy is to be consecrated to God from the womb. It is he who will begin the deliverance of Israel from the power of the Philistines."
And when she had gone to her husband, she said to him: “A man of God came to me, having the countenance of an Angel, exceedingly terrible. And when I had inquired of him, who he was, and where he was from, and what name he was called, he was not willing to tell me.6 The woman went and told her husband, "A man of God came to me; he had the appearance of an angel of God, terrible indeed. I did not ask him where he came from, nor did he tell me his name.
But he responded: ‘Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. Take care that you do not drink wine or strong drink. And you shall not consume anything unclean. For the boy shall be a Nazirite of God from his infancy, from his mother’s womb, even until the day of his death.’ ”7 But he said to me, 'You will be with child and will bear a son. So take neither wine nor strong drink, and eat nothing unclean. For the boy shall be consecrated to God from the womb, until the day of his death.'"
And so Manoah prayed to the Lord, and he said, “I beg you Lord, that the man of God, whom you sent, may come again, and may teach us what we ought to do about the boy who is to be born.”8 Manoah then prayed to the LORD. "O LORD, I beseech you," he said, "may the man of God whom you sent, return to us to teach us what to do for the boy who will be born."
And the Lord heeded the prayer of Manoah, and the Angel of the Lord appeared again to his wife, sitting in a field. But her husband Manoah was not with her. And when she had seen the Angel,9 God heard the prayer of Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman as she was sitting in the field. Since her husband Manoah was not with her,
she hurried and ran to her husband. And she reported to him, saying, “Behold, the man appeared to me, whom I had seen before.”10 the woman ran in haste and told her husband. "The man who came to me the other day has appeared to me," she said to him;
And he rose up and followed his wife. And going to the man, he said to him, “Are you the one who spoke to my wife?” And he responded, “I am.”11 so Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he reached the man, he said to him, "Are you the one who spoke to my wife?" "Yes," he answered.
And Manoah said to him: “When will your word be fulfilled. What do you want the boy to do? Or from what should he keep himself?”12 Then Manoah asked, "Now, when that which you say comes true, what are we expected to do for the boy?"
And the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah: “Concerning all the things about which I have spoken to your wife, she herself should abstain.13 The angel of the LORD answered Manoah, "Your wife is to abstain from all the things of which I spoke to her.
And let her eat nothing from the vine. She may not drink wine or strong drink. She may consume nothing unclean. And let her observe and keep what I have instructed to her.”14 She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor take wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. Let her observe all that I have commanded her."
And Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “I beg you to agree to my petition, and to let us prepare a kid from the goats.”15 Then Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, "Can we persuade you to stay, while we prepare a kid for you?"
And the Angel answered him: “Even if you compel me, I will not eat from your bread. But if you are willing to offer a holocaust, offer it to the Lord.” And Manoah did not know that he was an Angel of the Lord.16 But the angel of the LORD answered Manoah, "Although you press me, I will not partake of your food. But if you will, you may offer a holocaust to the LORD."Not knowing that it was the angel of the LORD,
And he said to him, “What is your name, so that, if your word is fulfilled, we may honor you?”17 Manoah said to him, "What is your name, that we may honor you when your words come true?"
And he answered him, “Why do you ask my name, which is a wonder?”18 The angel of the LORD answered him, "Why do you ask my name, which is mysterious?"
And so, Manoah took a kid from the goats, and libations, and he placed them upon a rock, as an offering to the Lord, who accomplishes wonders. Then he and his wife watched.19 Then Manoah took the kid with a cereal offering and offered it on the rock to the LORD, whose works are mysteries. While Manoah and his wife were looking on,
And when the flame of the altar ascended to heaven, the Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame. And when Manoah and his wife had seen this, they fell prone on the ground.20 as the flame rose to the sky from the altar, the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell prostrate to the ground;
And the Angel of the Lord no longer appeared to them. And immediately, Manoah understood him to be an Angel of the Lord.21 but the angel of the LORD was seen no more by Manoah and his wife. Then Manoah, realizing that it was the angel of the LORD,
And he said to his wife, “We shall certainly die, since we have seen God.”22 said to his wife, "We will certainly die, for we have seen God."
And his wife answered him, “If the Lord wished to kill us, he would not have accepted the holocaust and the libations from our hands. He would not have revealed all these things to us, nor would he have told us the things that are in the future.”23 But his wife pointed out to him, "If the LORD had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a holocaust and cereal offering from our hands! Nor would he have let us see all this just now, or hear what we have heard."
And so she bore a son, and she called his name Samson. And the boy grew up, and the Lord blessed him.24 The woman bore a son and named him Samson. The boy grew up and the LORD blessed him;
And the Spirit of the Lord began to be with him in the camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.25 the spirit of the LORD first stirred him in Mahaneh-dan, which is between Zorah and Eshtaol.
