1 Consider, most beloved, this second epistle which I am writing to you, in which I stir up, by admonition, your sincere mind,	1 Caríssimos, esta é a segunda carta que vos escrevo. Tanto numa como noutra, apelo às vossas recordações para despertar em vós uma sã compreensão,
2 so that you may be mindful of those words that I preached to you from the holy prophets, and of the precepts of the Apostles of your Lord and Savior.	2 e para vos lembrar as predições dos santos profetas, bem como o mandamento de nosso Senhor e Salvador, ensinado por vossos apóstolos.
3 Know this first: that in the last days there will arrive deceitful mockers, walking according to their own desires,	3 Sabei antes de tudo o seguinte: nos últimos tempos virão escarnecedores cheios de zombaria, que viverão segundo as suas próprias concupiscências.
4 saying: “Where is his promise or his advent? For from the time that the fathers have slept, all things have continued just as they were from the beginning of creation.”	4 Eles dirão: Onde está a promessa de sua vinda? Desde que nossos pais morreram, tudo continua como desde o princípio do mundo.
5 But they willfully ignore this: that the heavens existed first, and that the earth, from water and through water, was established by the Word of God.	5 Esquecem-se propositadamente que desde o princípio existiam os céus e igualmente uma terra que a palavra de Deus fizera surgir do seio das águas, no meio da água,
6 By water, the former world then, having been inundated with water, perished.	6 e deste modo o mundo de então perecia afogado na água.
7 But the heavens and the earth that exist now were restored by the same Word, being reserved unto fire on the day of judgment, and unto the perdition of impious men.	7 Mas os céus e a terra que agora existem são guardados pela mesma palavra divina e reservados para o fogo no dia do juízo e da perdição dos ímpios.
8 Yet truly, let this one thing not escape notice, most beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day.	8 Mas há uma coisa, caríssimos, de que não vos deveis esquecer: um dia diante do Senhor é como mil anos, e mil anos como, um dia.
9 The Lord is not delaying his promise, as some imagine, but he does act patiently for your sake, not wanting anyone to perish, but wanting all to be turned back to penance.	9 O Senhor não retarda o cumprimento de sua promessa, como alguns pensam, mas usa da paciência para convosco. Não quer que alguém pereça; ao contrário, quer que todos se arrependam.
10 Then the day of the Lord shall arrive like a thief. On that day, the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and truly the elements shall be dissolved with heat; then the earth, and the works that are within it, shall be completely burned up.	10 Entretanto, virá o dia do Senhor como ladrão. Naquele dia os céus passarão com ruído, os elementos abrasados se dissolverão, e será consumida a terra com todas as obras que ela contém.
11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what kind of people ought you to be? In behavior and in piety, be holy,	11 Uma vez que todas estas coisas se hão de desagregar, considerai qual deve ser a santidade de vossa vida e de vossa piedade,
12 waiting for, and hurrying toward, the advent of the day of the Lord, by which the burning heavens shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt from the heat of the fire.	12 enquanto esperais e apressais o dia de Deus, esse dia em que se hão de dissolver os céus inflamados e se hão de fundir os elementos abrasados!
13 Yet truly, in accord with his promises, we are looking forward to the new heavens and the new earth, in which justice lives.	13 Nós, porém, segundo sua promessa, esperamos novos céus e uma nova terra, nos quais habitará a justiça.
14 Therefore, most beloved, while awaiting these things, be diligent, so that you may be found to be immaculate and unassailable before him, in peace.	14 Portanto, caríssimos, esperando estas coisas, esforçai-vos em ser por ele achados sem mácula e irrepreensíveis na paz.
15 And let the longsuffering of our Lord be considered salvation, as also our most beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you,	15 Reconhecei que a longa paciência de nosso Senhor vos é salutar, como também vosso caríssimo irmão Paulo vos escreveu, segundo o dom de sabedoria que lhe foi dado.
16 just as he also spoke in all of his epistles about these things. In these, there are certain things which are difficult to understand, which the unlearned and the unsteady distort, as they also do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.	16 É o que ele faz em todas as suas cartas, nas quais fala nestes assuntos. Nelas há algumas passagens difíceis de entender, cujo sentido os espíritos ignorantes ou pouco fortalecidos deturpam, para a sua própria ruína, como o fazem também com as demais Escrituras.
17 But since you, brothers, know these things beforehand, be cautious, lest by being drawn into the error of the foolish, you may fall away from your own steadfastness.	17 Vós, pois, caríssimos, advertidos de antemão, tomai cuidado para que não caiais da vossa firmeza, levados pelo erro destes homens ímpios.
18 Yet truly, increase in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory, both now and in the day of eternity. Amen.	18 Mas crescei na graça e no conhecimento de nosso Senhor e Salvador Jesus Cristo. A ele a glória agora e eternamente.
