CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNOVA VULGATA
And so, as a prisoner in the Lord, I beg you to walk in a manner worthy of the vocation to which you have been called:1 Obsecro itaque vos ego, vinctus in Domino, ut digne ambuletis vocatione,qua vocati estis,
with all humility and meekness, with patience, supporting one another in charity.2 cum omni humilitate et mansuetudine, cum longanimitate,supportantes invicem in caritate,
Be anxious to preserve the unity of the Spirit within the bonds of peace.3 solliciti servare unitatem spiritus invinculo pacis;
One body and one Spirit: to this you have been called by the one hope of your calling:4 unum corpus et unus Spiritus, sicut et vocati estis in una spevocationis vestrae;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism,5 unus Dominus, una fides, unum baptisma;
one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.6 unus Deus etPater omnium, qui super omnes et per omnia et in omnibus.
Yet to each one of us there has been given grace according to the measure allotted by Christ.7 Unicuique autem nostrum data est gratia secundum mensuram donationis Christi.
Because of this, he says: “Ascending on high, he took captivity itself captive; he gave gifts to men.”8 Propter quod dicit:
“ Ascendens in altum captivam duxit captivitatem,
dedit dona hominibus ”.
Now that he has ascended, what is left except for him also to descended, first to the lower parts of the earth?9 Illud autem “ ascendit ” quid est, nisi quia et descendit in inferiorespartes terrae?
He who descended is the same one who also ascended above all the heavens, so that he might fulfill everything.10 Qui descendit, ipse est et qui ascendit super omnes caelos, utimpleret omnia.
And the same one granted that some would be Apostles, and some Prophets, yet truly others evangelists, and others pastors and teachers,11 Et ipse dedit quosdam quidem apostolos, quosdam autemprophetas, alios vero evangelistas, alios autem pastores et doctores
for the sake of the perfection of the saints, by the work of the ministry, in the edification of the body of Christ,12 adinstructionem sanctorum in opus ministerii, in aedificationem corporis Christi,
until we all meet in the unity of faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as a perfect man, in the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ.13 donec occurramus omnes in unitatem fidei et agnitionis Filii Dei, in virumperfectum, in mensuram aetatis plenitudinis Christi,
So may we then no longer be little children, disturbed and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the wickedness of men, and by the craftiness which deceives unto error.14 ut iam non simus parvulifluctuantes et circumacti omni vento doctrinae in fallacia hominum, in astutiaad circumventionem erroris;
Instead, acting according to truth in charity, we should increase in everything, in him who is the head, Christ himself.15 veritatem autem facientes in caritate crescamusin illum per omnia, qui est caput Christus,
For in him, the whole body is joined closely together, by every underlying joint, through the function allotted to each part, bringing improvement to the body, toward its edification in charity.16 ex quo totum corpus compactum etconexum per omnem iuncturam subministrationis secundum operationem in mensurauniuscuiusque partis augmentum corporis facit in aedificationem sui in caritate.
And so, I say this, and I testify in the Lord: that from now on you should walk, not as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind,17 Hoc igitur dico et testificor in Domino, ut iam non ambuletis, sicut etgentes ambulant in vanitate sensus sui
having their intellect obscured, being alienated from the life of God, through the ignorance that is within them, because of the blindness of their hearts.18 tenebris obscuratum habentesintellectum, alienati a vita Dei propter ignorantiam, quae est in illis proptercaecitatem cordis ipsorum;
Such as these, despairing, have given themselves over to sexual immorality, carrying out every impurity with rapacity.19 qui indolentes semetipsos tradiderunt impudicitiaein operationem immunditiae omnis in avaritia.
But this is not what you have learned in Christ.20 Vos autem non ita didicistis Christum,
For certainly, you have listened to him, and you have been instructed in him, according to the truth that is in Jesus:21 si tamen illum audistis et in ipsoedocti estis, sicut est veritas in Iesu:
to set aside your earlier behavior, the former man, who was corrupted, by means of desire, unto error,22 deponere vos secundum pristinamconversationem veterem hominem, qui corrumpitur secundum desideria erroris,
and so be renewed in the spirit of your mind,23 renovari autem spiritu mentis vestrae
and so put on the new man, who, in accord with God, is created in justice and in the holiness of truth.24 et induere novum hominem, qui secundumDeum creatus est in iustitia et sanctitate veritatis.
Because of this, setting aside lying, speak the truth, each one with his neighbor. For we are all part of one another.25 Propter quod deponentesmendacium loquimini veritatem unusquisque cum proximo suo, quoniam sumus invicemmembra.
“Be angry, but do not be willing to sin.” Do not let the sun set over your anger.26 Irascimini et nolite peccare; sol non occidat super iracundiamvestram,
Provide no place for the devil.27 et nolite locum dare Diabolo.
Whoever was stealing, let him now not steal, but rather let him labor, working with his hands, doing what is good, so that he may have something to distribute to those who suffer need.28 Qui furabatur, iam non furetur,magis autem laboret operando manibus bonum, ut habeat unde tribuat necessitatempatienti.
Let no evil words proceed from your mouth, but only what is good, toward the edification of faith, so as to bestow grace upon those who listen.29 Omnis sermo malus ex ore vestro non procedat, sed si quis bonus adaedificationem opportunitatis, ut det gratiam audientibus.
And do not be willing to grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you have been sealed, unto the day of redemption.30 Et nolitecontristare Spiritum Sanctum Dei, in quo signati estis in diem redemptionis.
Let all bitterness and anger and indignation and outcry and blasphemy be taken away from you, along with all malice.31 Omnis amaritudo et ira et indignatio et clamor et blasphemia tollatur a vobiscum omni malitia.
And be kind and merciful to one another, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you in Christ.32 Estote autem invicem benigni, misericordes, donantesinvicem, sicut et Deus in Christo donavit vobis.
