Then, after the tumult ceased, Paul, calling the disciples to himself and exhorting them, said farewell. And he set out, so that he might go into Macedonia.1 When the disturbance was over, Paul sent for the disciples and, after speaking words ofencouragement to them, said good -- bye and set out for Macedonia.
And when he had walked through those areas and had exhorted them with many sermons, he went into Greece.2 On his way through those areas he said many words of encouragement to them and then made hisway into Greece,
After he had spent three months there, treacheries were planned against him by the Jews, just as he was about to sail into Syria. And having been advised of this, he return through Macedonia.3 where he spent three months. He was leaving by ship for Syria when a plot organised against him bythe Jews made him decide to go back by way of Macedonia.
Now those accompanying him were Sopater, the son of Pyrrhus from Beroea; and also the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and also Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.4 He was accompanied by Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, who came from Beroea; Aristarchus and Secunduswho came from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus who werefrom Asia.
These, after they had gone ahead, waited for us at Troas.5 They al went on to Troas where they waited for us.
Yet truly, we sailed from Philippi, after the days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days we went to them at Troas, where we stayed for seven days.6 We ourselves left Philippi by ship after the days of Unleavened Bread and joined them five days later atTroas, where we stayed for a week.
Then, on the first Sabbath, when we had assembled together to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to set out the next day. But he prolonged his sermon into the middle of the night.7 On the first day of the week we met for the breaking of bread. Paul was due to leave the next day, andhe preached a sermon that went on til the middle of the night.
Now there were plenty of lamps in the upper room, where we were gathered.8 A number of lamps were lit in the upstairs room where we were assembled,
And a certain adolescent named Eutychus, sitting on the window sill, was being weighed down by a heavy drowsiness (for Paul was preaching at length). Then, as he went to sleep, he fell from the third floor room downward. And when he was lifted up, he was dead.9 and as Paul went on and on, a young man called Eutychus who was sitting on the window-sil grewdrowsy and was overcome by sleep and fel to the ground three floors below. He was picked up dead.
When Paul had gone down to him, he laid himself over him and, embracing him, said, “Do not worry, for his soul is still within him.”10 Paul went down and stooped to clasp the boy to him, saying, 'There is no need to worry, there is stillife in him.'
And so, going up, and breaking bread, and eating, and having spoken well on until daylight, he then set out.11 Then he went back upstairs where he broke the bread and ate and carried on talking til he left atdaybreak.
Now they had brought the boy in alive, and they were more than a little consoled.12 They took the boy away alive, and were greatly encouraged.
Then we climbed aboard the ship and sailed to Assos, where we were to take in Paul. For so he himself had decided, since he was making the journey by land.13 We were now to go on ahead by sea, so we set sail for Assos, where we were to take Paul on board;this was what he had arranged, for he wanted to go overland.
And when he had joined us at Assos, we took him in, and we went to Mitylene.14 When he rejoined us at Assos we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.
And sailing from there, on the following day, we arrived opposite Chios. And next we landed at Samos. And on the following day we went to Miletus.15 The next day we sailed from there and arrived opposite Chios. The second day we touched at Samosand, after stopping at Trogyllium, made Miletus the next day.
For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he would not be delayed in Asia. For he was hurrying so that, if it were possible for him, he might observe the day of Pentecost at Jerusalem.16 Paul had decided to pass wide of Ephesus so as to avoid spending time in Asia, since he wasanxious to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.
Then, sending from Miletus to Ephesus, he called those greater by birth in the church.17 From Miletus he sent for the elders of the church of Ephesus.
And when they had come to him and were together, he said to them: “You know that from the first day when I entered into Asia, I have been with you, for the entire time, in this manner:18 When they arrived he addressed these words to them: 'You know what my way of life has been eversince the first day I set foot among you in Asia,
serving the Lord, with all humility and despite the tears and trials which befell me from the treacheries of the Jews,19 how I have served the Lord in al humility, with al the sorrows and trials that came to me through theplots of the Jews.
how I held back nothing that was of value, how well I have preached to you, and that I have taught you publicly and throughout the houses,20 I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you; I have preached to you and instructedyou both in public and in your homes,
testifying both to Jews and to Gentiles about repentance in God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.21 urging both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and to believe in our Lord Jesus.
And now, behold, being obliged in spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there,22 'And now you see me on my way to Jerusalem in captivity to the Spirit; I have no idea what wilhappen to me there,
except that the Holy Spirit, throughout every city, has cautioned me, saying that chains and tribulations await me at Jerusalem.23 except that the Holy Spirit, in town after town, has made it clear to me that imprisonment andpersecution await me.
But I dread none of these things. Neither do I consider my life to be more precious because it is my own, provided that in some way I may complete my own course and that of the ministry of the Word, which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the Gospel of the grace of God.24 But I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission the Lord Jesus gaveme -- to bear witness to the good news of God's grace.
And now, behold, I know that you will no longer see my face, all of you among whom I have traveled, preaching the kingdom of God.25 'I now feel sure that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom wil eversee my face again.
For this reason, I call you as witnesses on this very day: that I am clean from the blood of all.26 And so on this very day I swear that my conscience is clear as far as all of you are concerned,
For I have not turned aside in the least from announcing every counsel of God to you.27 for I have without faltering put before you the whole of God's purpose.
Take care of yourselves and of the entire flock, over which the Holy Spirit has stationed you as Bishops to rule the Church of God, which he has purchased by his own blood.28 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you theguardians, to feed the Church of God which he bought with the blood of his own Son.
I know that after my departure ravenous wolves will enter among you, not sparing the flock.29 'I know quite wel that when I have gone fierce wolves wil invade you and will have no mercy on theflock.
And from among yourselves, men will rise up, speaking perverse things in order to entice disciples after them.30 Even from your own ranks there wil be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips toinduce the disciples to fol ow them.
Because of this, be vigilant, retaining in memory that throughout three years I did not cease, night and day, with tears, to admonish each and every one of you.31 So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never slackened in counsel ingeach one of you with tears.
And now, I commend you to God and to the Word of his grace. He has the power to build up, and to give an inheritance to all who are sanctified.32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and togive you your inheritance among all the sanctified.
I have coveted neither silver and gold, nor apparel,33 'I have never asked anyone for money or clothes;
as you yourselves know. For that which was needed by me and by those who are with me, these hands have provided.34 you know for yourselves that these hands of mine earned enough to meet my needs and those of mycompanions.
I have revealed all things to you, because by laboring in this way, it is necessary to support the weak and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”35 By every means I have shown you that we must exert ourselves in this way to support the weak,remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, "There is more happiness in giving than inreceiving." '
And when he had said these things, kneeling down, he prayed with all of them.36 When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed.
Then a great weeping occurred among them all. And, falling upon the neck of Paul, they kissed him,37 By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul's neck and kissed him;
being grieved most of all over the word which he had said, that they would never see his face again. And they brought him to the ship.38 what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escortedhim to the ship.
