Before the feast day of the Passover, Jesus knew that the hour was approaching when he would pass from this world to the Father. And since he had always loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.1 Ante diem festum Paschæ, sciens Jesus quia venit hora ejus ut transeat ex hoc mundo ad Patrem : cum dilexisset suos, qui erant in mundo, in finem dilexit eos.
And when the meal had taken place, when the devil had now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,2 Et cœna facta, cum diabolus jam misisset in cor ut traderet eum Judas Simonis Iscariotæ :
knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he came from God and was going to God,3 sciens quia omnia dedit ei Pater in manus, et quia a Deo exivit, et ad Deum vadit :
he rose up from the meal, and he set aside his vestments, and when he had received a towel, he wrapped it around himself.4 surgit a cœna, et ponit vestimenta sua, et cum accepisset linteum, præcinxit se.
Next he put water into a shallow bowl, and he began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was wrapped.5 Deinde mittit aquam in pelvim, et cœpit lavare pedes discipulorum, et extergere linteo, quo erat præcinctus.
And then he came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him, “Lord, would you wash my feet?”6 Venit ergo ad Simonem Petrum. Et dicit ei Petrus : Domine, tu mihi lavas pedes ?
Jesus responded and said to him: “What I am doing, you do not now understand. But you shall understand it afterward.”7 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Quod ego facio, tu nescis modo : scies autem postea.
Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you will have no place with me.”8 Dicit ei Petrus : Non lavabis mihi pedes in æternum. Respondit ei Jesus : Si non lavero te, non habebis partem mecum.
Simon Peter said to him, “Then Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”9 Dicit ei Simon Petrus : Domine, non tantum pedes meos, sed et manus, et caput.
Jesus said to him: “He who is washed need only wash his feet, and then he will be entirely clean. And you are clean, but not all.”10 Dicit ei Jesus : Qui lotus est, non indiget nisi ut pedes lavet, sed est mundus totus. Et vos mundi estis, sed non omnes.
For he knew which one would betray him. For this reason, he said, “You are not all clean.”11 Sciebat enim quisnam esset qui traderet eum ; propterea dixit : Non estis mundi omnes.
And so, after he washed their feet and received his vestments, when he had sat down at table again, he said to them: “Do you know what I have done for you?12 Postquam ergo lavit pedes eorum, et accepit vestimenta sua, cum recubuisset iterum, dixit eis : Scitis quid fecerim vobis ?
You call me Teacher and Lord, and you speak well: for so I am.13 Vos vocatis me Magister et Domine, et bene dicitis : sum etenim.
Therefore, if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash the feet of one another.14 Si ergo ego lavi pedes vestros, Dominus et Magister, et vos debetis alter alterius lavare pedes.
For I have given you an example, so that just as I have done for you, so also should you do.15 Exemplum enim dedi vobis, ut quemadmodum ego feci vobis, ita et vos faciatis.
Amen, amen, I say to you, the servant is not greater than his Lord, and the apostle is not greater than he who sent him.16 Amen, amen dico vobis : non est servus major domino suo : neque apostolus major est eo qui misit illum.
If you understand this, you shall be blessed if you will do it.17 Si hæc scitis, beati eritis si feceritis ea.
I am not speaking about all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me shall lift up his heel against me.’18 Non de omnibus vobis dico : ego scio quos elegerim ; sed ut adimpleatur Scriptura : Qui manducat mecum panem, levabit contra me calcaneum suum.
And I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it has happened, you may believe that I am.19 Amodo dico vobis, priusquam fiat : ut cum factum fuerit, credatis quia ego sum.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives anyone whom I send, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me.”20 Amen, amen dico vobis : qui accipit si quem misero, me accipit ; qui autem me accipit, accipit eum qui me misit.
When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit. And he bore witness by saying: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that one among you shall betray me.”21 Cum hæc dixisset Jesus, turbatus est spiritu : et protestatus est, et dixit : Amen, amen dico vobis, quia unus ex vobis tradet me.
Therefore, the disciples looked around at one another, uncertain about whom he spoke.22 Aspiciebant ergo ad invicem discipuli, hæsitantes de quo diceret.
And leaning against the bosom of Jesus was one of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved.23 Erat ergo recumbens unus ex discipulis ejus in sinu Jesu, quem diligebat Jesus.
Therefore, Simon Peter motioned to this one and said to him, “Who is it that he is speaking about?”24 Innuit ergo huic Simon Petrus, et dixit ei : Quis est, de quo dicit ?
And so, leaning against the chest of Jesus, he said to him, “Lord, who is it?”25 Itaque cum recubuisset ille supra pectus Jesu, dicit ei : Domine, quis est ?
Jesus responded, “It is he to whom I shall extend the dipped bread.” And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.26 Respondit Jesus : Ille est cui ego intinctum panem porrexero. Et cum intinxisset panem, dedit Judæ Simonis Iscariotæ.
And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”27 Et post buccellam, introivit in eum Satanas. Et dixit ei Jesus : Quod facis, fac citius.
Now none of those sitting at table knew why he had said this to him.28 Hoc autem nemo scivit discumbentium ad quid dixerit ei.
For some were thinking that, because Judas held the purse, that Jesus had told him, “Buy those things which are needed by us for the feast day,” or that he might give something to the needy.29 Quidam enim putabant, quia loculos habebat Judas, quod dixisset ei Jesus : Eme ea quæ opus sunt nobis ad diem festum : aut egenis ut aliquid daret.
Therefore, having accepted the morsel, he went out immediately. And it was night.30 Cum ergo accepisset ille buccellam, exivit continuo. Erat autem nox.
Then, when he had gone out, Jesus said: “Now the Son of man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.31 Cum ergo exisset, dixit Jesus : Nunc clarificatus est Filius hominis, et Deus clarificatus est in eo.
If God has been glorified in him, then God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him without delay.32 Si Deus clarificatus est in eo, et Deus clarificabit eum in semetipso : et continuo clarificabit eum.
Little sons, for a brief while, I am with you. You shall seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go,’ so also I say to you now.33 Filioli, adhuc modicum vobiscum sum. Quæretis me ; et sicut dixi Judæis, quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire : et vobis dico modo.
I give you a new commandment: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so also must you love one another.34 Mandatum novum do vobis : ut diligatis invicem : sicut dilexi vos, ut et vos diligatis invicem.
By this, all shall recognize that you are my disciples: if you will have love for one another.”35 In hoc cognoscent omnes quia discipuli mei estis, si dilectionem habueritis ad invicem.
Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus responded: “Where I am going, you are not able to follow me now. But you shall follow afterward.”36 Dicit ei Simon Petrus : Domine, quo vadis ? Respondit Jesus : Quo ego vado non potes me modo sequi : sequeris autem postea.
Peter said to him: “Why am I unable to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”37 Dicit ei Petrus : Quare non possum te sequi modo ? animam meam pro te ponam.
Jesus answered him: “You will lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the rooster will not crow, until you deny me three times.”38 Respondit ei Jesus : Animam tuam pro me pones ? amen, amen dico tibi : non cantabit gallus, donec ter me neges.
