CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
“When there will have been found in the land, which the Lord your God will give to you, the corpse of a man who has been killed, and it is not known who is guilty of the murder,1 εαν δε ευρεθη τραυματιας εν τη γη η κυριος ο θεος σου διδωσιν σοι κληρονομησαι πεπτωκως εν τω πεδιω και ουκ οιδασιν τον παταξαντα
your judges and those greater by birth shall go out and measure, from the place of the corpse, the distance to each of the surrounding cities.2 εξελευσεται η γερουσια σου και οι κριται σου και εκμετρησουσιν επι τας πολεις τας κυκλω του τραυματιου
And in whichever one they perceive to be closer than the others, the elders shall take a calf from the herd, one which has not pulled with a yoke, nor tilled with a plow.3 και εσται η πολις η εγγιζουσα τω τραυματια και λημψεται η γερουσια της πολεως εκεινης δαμαλιν εκ βοων ητις ουκ ειργασται και ητις ουχ ειλκυσεν ζυγον
And they shall lead it into a rough and stony valley, one which has never been tilled or sown. And in that place, they shall cut the neck of the calf.4 και καταβιβασουσιν η γερουσια της πολεως εκεινης την δαμαλιν εις φαραγγα τραχειαν ητις ουκ ειργασται ουδε σπειρεται και νευροκοπησουσιν την δαμαλιν εν τη φαραγγι
And the priests the sons of Levi shall approach, those whom the Lord your God has chosen to minister to him, and to bless in his name, and to decide every controversy by their word, and to judge which things are clean and which are unclean.5 και προσελευσονται οι ιερεις οι λευιται οτι αυτους επελεξεν κυριος ο θεος σου παρεστηκεναι αυτω και ευλογειν επι τω ονοματι αυτου και επι τω στοματι αυτων εσται πασα αντιλογια και πασα αφη
And those greater by birth of that city, nearest to the one who was slain, shall go and shall wash their hands over the calf that was killed in the valley.6 και πασα η γερουσια της πολεως εκεινης οι εγγιζοντες τω τραυματια νιψονται τας χειρας επι την κεφαλην της δαμαλεως της νενευροκοπημενης εν τη φαραγγι
And they shall say: ‘Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it.7 και αποκριθεντες ερουσιν αι χειρες ημων ουκ εξεχεαν το αιμα τουτο και οι οφθαλμοι ημων ουχ εωρακασιν
Be merciful to your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, O Lord, and do not charge them with innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel.’ And so the guilt of the blood will be taken away from them.8 ιλεως γενου τω λαω σου ισραηλ ους ελυτρωσω κυριε εκ γης αιγυπτου ινα μη γενηται αιμα αναιτιον εν τω λαω σου ισραηλ και εξιλασθησεται αυτοις το αιμα
Then you will be free from the blood that was shed against the innocent, when you will have done as the Lord has instructed you.9 συ δε εξαρεις το αιμα το αναιτιον εξ υμων αυτων εαν ποιησης το καλον και το αρεστον εναντι κυριου του θεου σου
If you have gone out to fight against your enemies, and the Lord your God has delivered them into your hand, and if, as you are leading away the captives,10 εαν δε εξελθων εις πολεμον επι τους εχθρους σου και παραδω σοι κυριος ο θεος σου εις τας χειρας σου και προνομευσεις την προνομην αυτων
you see among the number of the captives a beautiful woman, and you love her, and you are willing to have her as a wife:11 και ιδης εν τη προνομη γυναικα καλην τω ειδει και ενθυμηθης αυτης και λαβης αυτην σαυτω γυναικα
then you shall lead her into your house. And she shall shave off her hair, and cut her nails short,12 και εισαξεις αυτην ενδον εις την οικιαν σου και ξυρησεις την κεφαλην αυτης και περιονυχιεις αυτην
and remove the garment in which she was captured. And she shall sit in your house and weep for her father and mother, for one month. And after that, you shall enter to her and sleep with her, and she shall be your wife.13 και περιελεις τα ιματια της αιχμαλωσιας αυτης απ' αυτης και καθιεται εν τη οικια σου και κλαυσεται τον πατερα και την μητερα μηνος ημερας και μετα ταυτα εισελευση προς αυτην και συνοικισθηση αυτη και εσται σου γυνη
But if afterwards she does not sit well in your mind, you shall set her free. You cannot sell her for money, nor can you oppress her by force. For you have humiliated her.14 και εσται εαν μη θελης αυτην εξαποστελεις αυτην ελευθεραν και πρασει ου πραθησεται αργυριου ουκ αθετησεις αυτην διοτι εταπεινωσας αυτην
If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other hated, and they have produced children by him, and if the son of the hated wife is the firstborn,15 εαν δε γενωνται ανθρωπω δυο γυναικες μια αυτων ηγαπημενη και μια αυτων μισουμενη και τεκωσιν αυτω η ηγαπημενη και η μισουμενη και γενηται υιος πρωτοτοκος της μισουμενης
and if he wishes to divide his substance among his sons: he cannot make the son of the beloved wife the firstborn, and so prefer him before the son of the hated wife.16 και εσται η αν ημερα κατακληροδοτη τοις υιοις αυτου τα υπαρχοντα αυτου ου δυνησεται πρωτοτοκευσαι τω υιω της ηγαπημενης υπεριδων τον υιον της μισουμενης τον πρωτοτοκον
Instead, he shall acknowledge the son of the hated wife as the firstborn, and he shall give to him a double portion of all that he has. For he is the first among his children, and the rights of the firstborn are owed to him.17 αλλα τον πρωτοτοκον υιον της μισουμενης επιγνωσεται δουναι αυτω διπλα απο παντων ων αν ευρεθη αυτω οτι ουτος εστιν αρχη τεκνων αυτου και τουτω καθηκει τα πρωτοτοκια
If a man produces a disobedient and reckless son, who will not listen to the orders of his father or mother, and, having been corrected, shows contempt for obedience:18 εαν δε τινι η υιος απειθης και ερεθιστης ουχ υπακουων φωνην πατρος και φωνην μητρος και παιδευσωσιν αυτον και μη εισακουη αυτων
they shall take him and lead him to the elders of the city and to the gate of judgment.19 και συλλαβοντες αυτον ο πατηρ αυτου και η μητηρ αυτου και εξαξουσιν αυτον επι την γερουσιαν της πολεως αυτου και επι την πυλην του τοπου αυτου
And they shall say to them: ‘This our son is reckless and disobedient. He shows contempt when listening to our admonitions. He occupies himself with carousing, and self-indulgence, and feasting.’20 και ερουσιν τοις ανδρασιν της πολεως αυτων ο υιος ημων ουτος απειθει και ερεθιζει ουχ υπακουει της φωνης ημων συμβολοκοπων οινοφλυγει
Then the people of the city shall stone him to death. And he shall die, so that you may take away the evil from your midst. And so may all of Israel, upon hearing it, be very afraid.21 και λιθοβολησουσιν αυτον οι ανδρες της πολεως αυτου εν λιθοις και αποθανειται και εξαρεις τον πονηρον εξ υμων αυτων και οι επιλοιποι ακουσαντες φοβηθησονται
When a man will have sinned in a matter which is punished by death, and, having been judged unto death, he has been hanged on a gallows:22 εαν δε γενηται εν τινι αμαρτια κριμα θανατου και αποθανη και κρεμασητε αυτον επι ξυλου
his corpse shall not remain on the tree. Instead, he shall be buried on the same day. For he who hangs from a tree has been cursed by God, and you shall not defile your land, which the Lord your God will give to you as a possession.”23 ουκ επικοιμηθησεται το σωμα αυτου επι του ξυλου αλλα ταφη θαψετε αυτον εν τη ημερα εκεινη οτι κεκατηραμενος υπο θεου πας κρεμαμενος επι ξυλου και ου μιανειτε την γην ην κυριος ο θεος σου διδωσιν σοι εν κληρω
