Now the days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, were approaching.1 La fête des Azymes, appelée la Pâque, approchait.
And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, were seeking a way to execute Jesus. Yet truly, they were afraid of the people.2 Et les grands prêtres et les scribes cherchaient comment le tuer, car ils avaient peur du peuple.
Then Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve.3 Or Satan entra dans Judas, appelé Iscariote, qui était du nombre des Douze.
And he went out and was speaking with the leaders of the priests, and the magistrates, as to how he might hand him over to them.4 Il s'en alla conférer avec les grands prêtres et les chefs des gardes sur le moyen de le leur livrer.
And they were glad, and so they made an agreement to give him money.5 Ils se réjouirent et convinrent de lui donner de l'argent.
And he made a promise. And he was seeking an opportunity to hand him over, apart from the crowds.6 Il acquiesça, et il cherchait une occasion favorable pour le leur livrer à l'insu de la foule.
Then the day of Unleavened Bread arrived, on which it was necessary to kill the Pascal lamb.7 Vint le jour des Azymes, où devait être immolée la pâque,
And he sent Peter and John, saying, “Go out, and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat.”8 et il envoya Pierre et Jean en disant: "Allez nous préparer la pâque, que nous la mangions."
But they said, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”9 Ils lui dirent: "Où veux-tu que nous préparions?"
And he said to them: “Behold, as you are entering into the city, a certain man will meet you, carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him to the house into which he enters.10 Il leur dit: "Voici qu'en entrant dans la ville, vous rencontrerez un homme portant une cruche d'eau.Suivez-le dans la maison où il pénétrera,
And you shall say to the father of the household: ‘The Teacher says to you: Where is the guestroom, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’11 et vous direz au propriétaire de la maison: Le Maître te fait dire: Où est la salle où je pourrai mangerla pâque avec mes disciples?
And he will show you a large cenacle, fully furnished. And so, prepare it there.”12 Et celui-ci vous montrera, à l'étage, une grande pièce garnie de coussins; faites-y les préparatifs."
And going out, they found it to be just as he had told them. And they prepared the Passover.13 S'en étant donc allés, ils trouvèrent comme il leur avait dit, et ils préparèrent la pâque.
And when the hour had arrived, he sat down at table, and the twelve Apostles with him.14 Lorsque l'heure fut venue, il se mit à table, et les apôtres avec lui.
And he said to them: “With longing have I desired to eat this Passover with you, before I suffer.15 Et il leur dit: "J'ai ardemment désiré manger cette pâque avec vous avant de souffrir;
For I say to you, that from this time, I will not eat it, until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”16 car je vous le dis, jamais plus je ne la mangerai jusqu'à ce qu'elle s'accomplisse dans le Royaume deDieu."
And having taken the chalice, he gave thanks, and he said: “Take this and share it among yourselves.17 Puis, ayant reçu une coupe, il rendit grâces et dit: "Prenez ceci et partagez entre vous;
For I say to you, that I will not drink from the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God arrives.”18 car, je vous le dis, je ne boirai plus désormais du produit de la vigne jusqu'à ce que le Royaume deDieu soit venu."
And taking bread, he gave thanks and broke it and gave it to them, saying: “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this as a commemoration of me.”19 Puis, prenant du pain, il rendit grâces, le rompit et le leur donna, en disant: "Ceci est mon corps,donné pour vous; faites cela en mémoire de moi."
Similarly also, he took the chalice, after he had eaten the meal, saying: “This chalice is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.20 Il fit de même pour la coupe après le repas, disant: "Cette coupe est la nouvelle Alliance en monsang, versé pour vous.
But in truth, behold, the hand of my betrayer is with me at table.21 "Cependant, voici que la main de celui qui me livre est avec moi sur la table.
And indeed, the Son of man goes according to what has been determined. And yet, woe to that man by whom he will be betrayed.”22 Le Fils de l'homme, certes, va son chemin selon ce qui a été arrêté, mais malheur à cet homme-là parqui il est livré!"
And they began to inquire among themselves, as to which of them might do this.23 Et eux se mirent à se demander entre eux quel était donc parmi eux celui qui allait faire cela.
Now there was also a contention among them, as to which of them seemed to be the greater.24 Il s'éleva aussi entre eux une contestation: lequel d'entre eux pouvait être tenu pour le plus grand?
And he said to them: “The kings of the Gentiles dominate them; and those who hold authority over them are called beneficent.25 Il leur dit: "Les rois des nations dominent sur eux, et ceux qui exercent le pouvoir sur eux se fontappeler Bienfaiteurs.
But it must not be so with you. Instead, whoever is greater among you, let him become the lesser.
For who is greater: he who sits at table, or he who serves? Is not he who sits at table?
But you are those who have remained with me during my trials.28 "Vous êtes, vous, ceux qui êtes demeurés constamment avec moi dans mes épreuves;
And I dispose to you, just as my Father has disposed to me, a kingdom,29 et moi je dispose pour vous du Royaume, comme mon Père en a disposé pour moi:
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and so that you may sit upon thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”30 vous mangerez et boirez à ma table en mon Royaume, et vous siégerez sur des trônes pour juger lesdouze tribus d'Israël.
And the Lord said: “Simon, Simon! Behold, Satan has asked for you, so that he may sift you like wheat.31 "Simon, Simon, voici que Satan vous a réclamés pour vous cribler comme froment;
But I have prayed for you, so that your faith may not fail, and so that you, once converted, may confirm your brothers.”32 mais moi j'ai prié pour toi, afin que ta foi ne défaille pas. Toi donc, quand tu seras revenu, affermistes frères."
And he said to him, “Lord, I am prepared to go with you, even to prison and to death.”33 Celui-ci lui dit: "Seigneur, je suis prêt à aller avec toi et en prison et à la mort."
And he said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you have three times denied that you know me.” And he said to them,34 Mais il dit: "Je te le dis, Pierre, le coq ne chantera pas aujourd'hui que tu n'aies, par trois fois, nié meconnaître."
“When I sent you without money or provisions or shoes, did you lack anything?”35 Puis il leur dit: "Quand je vous ai envoyés sans bourse, ni besace, ni sandales, avez-vous manqué dequelque chose" - "De rien", dirent-ils.
And they said, “Nothing.” Then he said to them: “But now, let whoever has money take it, and likewise with provisions. And whoever does not have these, let him sell his coat and buy a sword.36 Et il leur dit: "Mais maintenant, que celui qui a une bourse la prenne, de même celui qui a une besace,et que celui qui n'en a pas vende son manteau pour acheter un glaive.
For I say to you, that what has been written must still be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was esteemed with the wicked.’
So they said, “Lord, behold, there are two swords here.” But he said to them, “It is sufficient.”38 "Seigneur, dirent-ils, il y a justement ici deux glaives." Il leur répondit: "C'est bien assez!"
And departing, he went out, according to his custom, to the Mount of Olives. And his disciples also followed him.39 Il sortit et se rendit, comme de coutume, au mont des Oliviers, et les disciples aussi le suivirent.
And when he had arrived at the place, he said to them: “Pray, lest you enter into temptation.”40 Parvenu en ce lieu, il leur dit: "Priez, pour ne pas entrer en tentation."
And he was separated from them by about a stone’s throw. And kneeling down, he prayed,41 Puis il s'éloigna d'eux d'environ un jet de pierre et, fléchissant les genoux, il priait en disant:
saying: “Father, if you are willing, take this chalice away from me. Yet truly, let not my will, but yours, be done.”42 "Père, si tu veux, éloigne de moi cette coupe! Cependant, que ce ne soit pas ma volonté, mais latienne qui se fasse!"
Then an Angel appeared to him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony, he prayed more intensely;43 Alors lui apparut, venant du ciel, un ange qui le réconfortait.
and so his sweat became like drops of blood, running down to the ground.44 Entré en agonie, il priait de façon plus instante, et sa sueur devint comme de grosses gouttes de sangqui tombaient à terre.
And when he had risen up from prayer and had gone to his disciples, he found them sleeping out of sorrow.45 Se relevant de sa prière, il vint vers les disciples qu'il trouva endormis de tristesse,
And he said to them: “Why are you sleeping? Rise up, pray, lest you enter into temptation.”46 et il leur dit: "Qu'avez-vous à dormir? Relevez-vous et priez, pour ne pas entrer en tentation."
While he was still speaking, behold, a crowd arrived. And he who is called Judas, one of the twelve, went ahead of them and approached Jesus, in order to kiss him.47 Tandis qu'il parlait encore, voici une foule, et à sa tête marchait le nommé Judas, l'un des Douze, quis'approcha de Jésus pour lui donner un baiser.
And Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of man with a kiss?”48 Mais Jésus lui dit: "Judas, c'est par un baiser que tu livres le Fils de l'homme!"
Then those who were around him, realizing what was about to happen, said to him: “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”49 Voyant ce qui allait arriver, ses compagnons lui dirent: "Seigneur, faut-il frapper du glaive?"
And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.50 Et l'un d'eux frappa le serviteur du grand prêtre et lui enleva l'oreille droite.
But in response, Jesus said, “Permit even this.” And when he had touched his ear, he healed him.51 Mais Jésus prit la parole et dit: "Restez-en là."
Then Jesus said to the leaders of the priests, and the magistrates of the temple, and the elders, who had come to him: “Have you gone out, as if against a thief, with swords and clubs?52 Puis Jésus dit à ceux qui s'étaient portés contre lui, grands prêtres, chefs des gardes du Temple etanciens: "Suis-je un brigand, que vous vous soyez mis en campagne avec des glaives et des bâtons?
When I was with you each day in the temple, you did not extend your hands against me. But this is your hour and that of the power of darkness.”53 Alors que chaque jour j'étais avec vous dans le Temple, vous n'avez pas porté les mains sur moi.
And apprehending him, they led him to the house of the high priest.
Now as they were sitting around a fire, which had been kindled in the middle of the atrium, Peter was in their midst.55 Comme ils avaient allumé du feu au milieu de la cour et s'étaient assis autour, Pierre s'assit au milieud'eux.
And when a certain woman servant had seen him sitting in its light, and had looked at him intently, she said, “This one was also with him.”56 Une servante le vit assis près de la flambée et, fixant les yeux sur lui, elle dit: "Celui-là aussi étaitavec lui!"
But he denied him by saying, “Woman, I do not know him.”57 Mais lui nia en disant: "Femme, je ne le connais pas."
And after a little while, another one, seeing him, said, “You also are one of them.” Yet Peter said, “O man, I am not.”58 Peu après, un autre, l'ayant vu, déclara: "Toi aussi, tu en es!"
And after the interval of about one hour had passed, someone else affirmed it, saying: “Truly, this one also was with him. For he is also a Galilean.”59 Environ une heure plus tard, un autre soutenait avec insistance: "Sûrement, celui-là aussi était aveclui, et d'ailleurs il est Galiléen!" Mais Pierre dit:
And Peter said: “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” And at once, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.60 "Homme, je ne sais ce que tu dis."
And the Lord turned around and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord that he had said: “For before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”61 et le Seigneur, se retournant, fixa son regard sur Pierre.
And going out, Peter wept bitterly.62 Et, sortant dehors, il pleura amèrement.
And the men who were holding him ridiculed him and beat him.63 Les hommes qui le gardaient le bafouaient et le battaient;
And they blindfolded him and repeatedly struck his face. And they questioned him, saying: “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?”64 ils lui voilaient le visage et l'interrogeaient en disant: "Fais le prophète! Qui est-ce qui t'a frappé?"
And blaspheming in many other ways, they spoke against him.65 Et ils proféraient contre lui beaucoup d'autres injures.
And when it was daytime, the elders of the people, and the leaders of the priests, and the scribes convened. And they led him into their council, saying, “If you are the Christ, tell us.”66 Et quand il fit jour, le conseil des Anciens du peuple s'assembla, grands prêtres et scribes. Ilsl'amenèrent dans leur Sanhédrin
And he said to them: “If I tell you, you will not believe me.67 et dirent: "Si tu es le Christ, dis-le-nous." Il leur dit: "Si je vous le dis, vous ne croirez pas,
And if I also question you, you will not answer me. Neither will you release me.68 et si je vous interroge, vous ne répondrez pas.
But from this time, the Son of man will be sitting at the right hand of the power of God.”69 Mais désormais le Fils de l'homme siégera à la droite de la Puissance de Dieu!"
Then they all said, “So you are the Son of God?” And he said. “You are saying that I am.”70 Tous dirent alors: "Tu es donc le Fils de Dieu!"
And they said: “Why do we still require testimony? For we have heard it ourselves, from his own mouth.”71 Et ils dirent: "Qu'avons-nous encore besoin de témoignage? Car nous-mêmes l'avons entendu de sabouche!"
