And as they were approaching Jerusalem and Bethania, toward the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,1 Et cum appropinquarent Hierosolymae, Bethphage et Bethaniae ad montemOlivarum, mittit duos ex discipulis suis
and he said to them: “Go into the village that is opposite you, and immediately upon entering there, you will find a colt tied, on which no man has yet sat. Release him and bring him.2 et ait illis: “ Ite in castellum,quod est contra vos, et statim introeuntes illud invenietis pullum ligatum,super quem nemo adhuc hominum sedit; solvite illum et adducite.
And if anyone will say to you: ‘What are you doing?’ Say that the Lord has need of him. And he will immediately send him here.”3 Et si quisvobis dixerit: “Quid facitis hoc?”, dicite: “Domino necessarius est, etcontinuo illum remittit iterum huc” ”.
And going out, they found the colt tied before the outer gate, at the meeting of two ways. And they untied him.4 Et abeuntes invenerunt pullumligatum ante ianuam foris in bivio et solvunt eum.
And some of those who were standing there said to them, “What are you doing by releasing the colt?”5 Et quidam de illicstantibus dicebant illis: “ Quid facitis solventes pullum? ”.
And they spoke to them just as Jesus had instructed them. And they permitted them.6 Qui dixerunteis, sicut dixerat Iesus; et dimiserunt eis.
And they led the colt to Jesus. And they placed their garments on it; and he sat upon it.7 Et ducunt pullum ad Iesum etimponunt illi vestimenta sua; et sedit super eum.
Then many spread their garments along the way; but others cut down leafy branches from trees and scattered them on the way.8 Et multi vestimenta suastraverunt in via, alii autem frondes, quas exciderant in agris.
And those who went ahead, and those who followed, cried out saying: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who has arrived in the name of the Lord.9 Et quipraeibant et qui sequebantur, clamabant: “ Hosanna! Benedictus, qui venit innomine Domini!
Blessed is the advent of the kingdom of our father David. Hosanna in the highest!”10 Benedictum, quod venit regnum patris nostri David! Hosanna inexcelsis! ”.
And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple. And having looked around at everything, since it was now the evening hour, he went out to Bethania with the twelve.11 Et introivit Hierosolymam in templum; et circumspectis omnibus, cum iamvespera esset hora, exivit in Bethaniam cum Duodecim.
And the next day, as they were departing from Bethania, he was hungry.12 Et altera die cum exirent a Bethania, esuriit.
And when he had seen a fig tree with leaves in the distance, he went to it, in case he might find something on it. And when he had gone to it, he found nothing but leaves. For it was not the season for figs.13 Cumque vidisset a longeficum habentem folia, venit si quid forte inveniret in ea; et cum venisset adeam, nihil invenit praeter folia: non enim erat tempus ficorum.
And in response, he said to it, “From now on and forever, may no one eat fruit from you again!” And his disciples heard this.14 Et respondensdixit ei: “ Iam non amplius in aeternum quisquam fructum ex te manducet ”.Et audiebant discipuli eius.
And they went to Jerusalem. And when he had entered into the temple, he began to cast out the sellers and the buyers in the temple. And he overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the chairs of the vendors of doves.15 Et veniunt Hierosolymam. Et cum introisset in templum, coepit eicerevendentes et ementes in templo et mensas nummulariorum et cathedras vendentiumcolumbas evertit;
And he would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple.16 et non sinebat, ut quisquam vas transferret per templum.
And he taught them, saying: “Is it not written: ‘For my house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations?’ But you have made it into a den of robbers.”17 Et docebat dicens eis: “ Non scriptum est: “Domus mea domus orationisvocabitur omnibus gentibus”? Vos autem fecistis eam speluncam latronum ”.
And when the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, had heard this, they sought a means by which they might destroy him. For they feared him, because the entire multitude was in admiration over his doctrine.18 Quo audito, principes sacerdotum et scribae quaerebant quomodo eum perderent;timebant enim eum, quoniam universa turba admirabatur super doctrina eius.
And when evening had arrived, he departed from the city.19 Etcum vespera facta esset, egrediebantur de civitate.
And when they passed by in the morning, they saw that the fig tree had dried up from the roots.20 Et cum mane transirent, viderunt ficum aridam factam a radicibus.
And Peter, remembering, said to him, “Master, behold, the fig tree that you cursed has withered.”21 Etrecordatus Petrus dicit ei: “ Rabbi, ecce ficus, cui maledixisti, aruit ”.
And in response, Jesus said to them: “Have the faith of God.22 Et respondens Iesus ait illis: “ Habete fidem Dei!
Amen I say to you, that whoever will say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and who will not have hesitated in his heart, but will have believed: then whatever he has said be done, it shall be done for him.23 Amen dico vobis:Quicumque dixerit huic monti: “Tollere et mittere in mare”, et nonhaesitaverit in corde suo, sed crediderit quia, quod dixerit, fiat, fiet ei.
For this reason, I say to you, all things whatsoever that you ask for when praying: believe that you will receive them, and they will happen for you.24 Propterea dico vobis: Omnia, quaecumque orantes petitis, credite quia iamaccepistis, et erunt vobis.
And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your sins.25 Et cum statis in oratione, dimittite, si quidhabetis adversus aliquem, ut et
Pater vester, qui in caelis est, dimittat vobis peccata vestra ”.
But if you will not forgive, neither will your Father, who is in heaven, forgive you your sins.”26
And they went again to Jerusalem. And when he was walking in the temple, the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the elders approached him.27 Etveniunt rursus Hierosolymam. Et cum ambularet in templo, accedunt ad eum summisacerdotes et scribae et seniores
And they said to him: “By what authority do you do these things? And who has given you this authority, so that you would do these things?”28 et dicebant illi: “ In qua potestate haecfacis? Vel quis tibi dedit hanc potestatem, ut ista facias? ”.
But in response, Jesus said to them: “I also will ask you one word, and if you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things.29 Iesus autemait illis: “ Interrogabo vos unum verbum, et respondete mihi; et dicam vobis,in qua potestate haec faciam:
The baptism of John: was it from heaven or from men? Answer me.”30 Baptismum Ioannis de caelo erat an exhominibus? Respondete mihi ”.
But they discussed it among themselves, saying: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’31 At illi cogitabant secum dicentes: “ Sidixerimus: “De caelo”, dicet: “Quare ergo non credidistis ei?”;
If we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the people. For they all hold that John was a true prophet.”32 siautem dixerimus: “Ex hominibus?” ”. Timebant populum: omnes enim habebantIoannem quia vere propheta esset.
And answering, they said to Jesus, “We do not know.” And in response, Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”33 Et respondentes dicunt Iesu: “ Nescimus”. Et Iesus ait illis: “ Neque ego dico vobis in qua potestate haec faciam”.
