“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be like ten virgins, who, taking their lamps, went out to meet the groom and the bride.1 «Entonces el Reino de los Cielos será semejante a diez vírgenes, que, con su lámpara en la mano, salieron al encuentro del novio.
But five of them were foolish, and five were prudent.2 Cinco de ellas eran necias, y cinco prudentes.
For the five foolish, having brought their lamps, did not take oil with them.3 Las necias, en efecto, al tomar sus lámparas, no se proveyeron de aceite;
Yet truly, the prudent ones brought the oil, in their containers, with the lamps.4 las prudentes, en cambio, junto con sus lámparas tomaron aceite en las alcuzas.
Since the bridegroom was delayed, they all fell asleep, and they were sleeping.5 Como el novio tardara, se adormilaron todas y se durmieron.
But in the middle of the night, a cry went out: ‘Behold, the groom is arriving. Go out to meet him.’6 Mas a media noche se oyó un grito: “¡Ya está aquí el novio! ¡Salid a su encuentro!”
Then all those virgins rose up and trimmed their lamps.7 Entonces todas aquellas vírgenes se levantaron y arreglaron sus lámparas.
But the foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give to us from your oil, for our lamps are being extinguished.’8 Y las necias dijeron a las prudentes: “Dadnos de vuestro aceite, que nuestras lámparas se apagan.”
The prudent responded by saying, ‘Lest perhaps there may not be enough for us and for you, it would be better for you to go to the vendors and buy some for yourselves.’9 Pero las prudentes replicaron: “No, no sea que no alcance para nosotras y para vosotras; es mejor que vayáis donde los vendedores y os lo compréis.”
But while they were going to buy it, the groom arrived. And those who were prepared entered with him to the wedding, and the door was closed.10 Mientras iban a comprarlo, llegó el novio, y las que estaban preparadas entraron con él al banquete de boda, y se cerró la puerta.
Yet truly, at the very end, the remaining virgins also arrived, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’11 Más tarde llegaron las otras vírgenes diciendo: “¡Señor, señor, ábrenos!”
But he responded by saying, ‘Amen I say to you, I do not know you.’12 Pero él respondió: “En verdad os digo que no os conozco.”
And so you must be vigilant, because you do not know the day or the hour.13 Velad, pues, porque no sabéis ni el día ni la hora.
For it is like a man setting out on a long journey, who called his servants and delivered to them his goods.14 «Es también como un hombre que, al ausentarse, llamó a sus siervos y les encomendó su hacienda:
And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, yet to another he gave one, to each according to his own ability. And promptly, he set out.15 a uno dio cinco talentos, a otro dos y a otro uno, a cada cual según su capacidad; y se ausentó.
Then he who had received five talents went out, and he made use of these, and he gained another five.16 Enseguida, el que había recibido cinco talentos se puso a negociar con ellos y ganó otros cinco.
And similarly, he who had received two gained another two.17 Igualmente el que había recibido dos ganó otros dos.
But he who had received one, going out, dug into the earth, and he hid the money of his lord.18 En cambio el que había recibido uno se fue, cavó un hoyo en tierra y escondió el dinero de su señor.
Yet truly, after a long time, the lord of those servants returned and he settled accounts with them.19 Al cabo de mucho tiempo, vuelve el señor de aquellos siervos y ajusta cuentas con ellos.
And when he who had received five talents approached, he brought another five talents, saying: ‘Lord, you delivered five talents to me. Behold, I have increased it by another five.’20 Llegándose el que había recibido cinco talentos, presentó otros cinco, diciendo: “Señor, cinco talentos me entregaste; aquí tienes otros cinco que he ganado.”
His lord said to him: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful over a few things, I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the gladness of your lord.’21 Su señor le dijo: “¡Bien, siervo bueno y fiel!; en lo poco has sido fiel, al frente de lo mucho te pondré; entra en el gozo de tu señor.”
Then he who had received two talents also approached, and he said: ‘Lord, you delivered two talents to me. Behold, I have gained another two.’22 Llegándose también el de los dos talentos dijo: “Señor, dos talentos me entregaste; aquí tienes otros dos que he ganado.”
His lord said to him: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful over a few things, I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the gladness of your lord.’23 Su señor le dijo: “¡Bien, siervo bueno y fiel!; en lo poco has sido fiel, al frente de lo mucho te pondré; entra en el gozo de tu señor.”
Then he who had received one talent, approaching, said: ‘Lord, I know that you are a hard man. You reap where you have not sown, and gather where you have not scattered.24 Llegándose también el que había recibido un talento dijo: “Señor, sé que eres un hombre duro, que cosechas donde no sembraste y recoges donde no esparciste.
And so, being afraid, I went out and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours.’25 Por eso me dio miedo, y fui y escondí en tierra tu talento. Mira, aquí tienes lo que es tuyo.”
But his lord said to him in response: ‘You evil and lazy servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered.26 Mas su señor le respondió: “Siervo malo y perezoso, sabías que yo cosecho donde no sembré y recojo donde no esparcí;
Therefore, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and then, at my arrival, at least I would have received what is mine with interest.27 debías, pues, haber entregado mi dinero a los banqueros, y así, al volver yo, habría cobrado lo mío con los intereses.
And so, take the talent away from him and give it the one who has ten talents.28 Quitadle, por tanto, su talento y dádselo al que tiene los diez talentos.
For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he shall have in abundance. But from him who has not, even what he seems to have, shall be taken away.29 Porque a todo el que tiene, se le dará y le sobrará; pero al que no tiene, aun lo que tiene se le quitará.
And cast that useless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’30 Y a ese siervo inútil, echadle a las tinieblas de fuera. Allí será el llanto y el rechinar de dientes.”
But when the Son of man will have arrived in his majesty, and all the Angels with him, then he will sit upon the seat of his majesty.31 «Cuando el Hijo del hombre venga en su gloria acompañado de todos sus ángeles, entonces se sentará en su trono de gloria.
And all the nations shall be gathered together before him. And he shall separate them from one another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.32 Serán congregadas delante de él todas las naciones, y él separará a los unos de los otros, como el pastor separa las ovejas de los cabritos.
And he shall station the sheep, indeed, on his right, but the goats on his left.33 Pondrá las ovejas a su derecha, y los cabritos a su izquierda.
Then the King shall say to those who will be on his right: ‘Come, you blessed of my Father. Possess the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.34 Entonces dirá el Rey a los de su derecha: “Venid, benditos de mi Padre, recibid la herencia del Reino preparado para vosotros desde la creación del mundo.
For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in;35 Porque tuve hambre, y me disteis de comer; tuve sed, y me disteis de beber; era forastero, y me acogisteis;
naked, and you covered me; sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’36 estaba desnudo, y me vestisteis; enfermo, y me visitasteis; en la cárcel, y vinisteis a verme.”
Then the just will answer him, saying: ‘Lord, when have we see you hungry, and fed you; thirsty, and given you drink?37 Entonces los justos le responderán: “Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento, y te dimos de comer; o sediento, y te dimos de beber?
And when have we seen you a stranger, and taken you in? Or naked, and covered you?38 ¿Cuándo te vimos forastero, y te acogimos; o desnudo, y te vestimos?
Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and visit to you?’39 ¿Cuándo te vimos enfermo o en la cárcel, y fuimos a verte?”
And in response, the King shall say to them, ‘Amen I say to you, whenever you did this for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did it for me.’40 Y el Rey les dirá: “En verdad os digo que cuanto hicisteis a unos de estos hermanos míos más pequeños, a mí me lo hicisteis.”
Then he shall also say, to those who will be on his left: ‘Depart from me, you accursed ones, into the eternal fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels.41 Entonces dirá también a los de su izquierda: “Apartaos de mí, malditos, al fuego eterno preparado para el Diablo y sus ángeles.
For I was hungry, and you did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and you did not give me to drink;42 Porque tuve hambre, y no me disteis de comer; tuve sed, y no me disteis de beber;
I was a stranger and you did not take me in; naked, and you did not cover me; sick and in prison, and you did not visit me.’43 era forastero, y no me acogisteis; estaba desnudo, y no me vestisteis; enfermo y en la cárcel, y no me visitasteis.”
Then they will also answer him, saying: ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to you?’44 Entonces dirán también éstos: “Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento o sediento o forastero o desnudo o enfermo o en la cárcel, y no te asistimos?”
Then he shall respond to them by saying: ‘Amen I say to you, whenever you did not do it to one of these least, neither did you do it to me.’45 Y él entonces les responderá: “En verdad os digo que cuanto dejasteis de hacer con uno de estos más pequeños, también conmigo dejasteis de hacerlo.”
And these shall go into eternal punishment, but the just shall go into eternal life.”46 E irán éstos a un castigo eterno, y los justos a una vida eterna».
