CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
In that hour, the disciples drew near to Jesus, saying, “Whom do you consider to be greater in the kingdom of heaven?”1 En aquel momento los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús para preguntarle: «¿Quién es el más grande en el Reino de los Cielos?».
And Jesus, calling to himself a little child, placed him in their midst.2 Jesús llamó a un niño, lo puso en medio de ellos
And he said: “Amen I say to you, unless you change and become like little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.3 y dijo: «Les aseguro que si ustedes no cambian o no se hacen como niños, no entrarán en el Reino de los Cielos.
Therefore, whoever will have humbled himself like this little child, such a one is greater in the kingdom of heaven.4 Por lo tanto, el que se haga pequeño como este niño, será el más grande en el Reino de los Cielos.
And whoever shall accept one such little child in my name, accepts me.5 El que recibe a uno de estos pequeños en mi Nombre, me recibe a mí mismo.
But whoever will have led astray one of these little ones, who trust in me, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck, and to be submerged in the depths of the sea.6 Pero si alguien escandaliza a uno de estos pequeños que creen en mí, sería preferible para él que le ataran al cuello una piedra de moler y lo hundieran en el fondo del mar.
Woe to a world that leads people astray! Although it is necessary for temptations to arise, nevertheless: Woe to that man through whom temptation arises!7 ¡Ay del mundo a causa de los escándalos! Es inevitable que existan pero ¡ay de aquel que los causa!
So if your hand or your foot leads you to sin, cut it off and cast it away from you. It is better for you to enter into life disabled or lame, than to be sent into eternal fire having two hands or two feet.8 Si tu mano o tu pie son para ti ocasión de pecado, córtalos y arrójalos lejos de ti, porque más te vale entrar en la Vida manco o lisiado, que ser arrojado con tus dos manos o tus pies en el fuego eterno.
And if your eye leads you to sin, root it out and cast it away from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, than to be sent into the fires of Hell having two eyes.9 Y si tu ojo es para ti ocasión de pecado, arráncalo y tíralo lejos, porque más te vale entrar con un solo ojo en la Vida, que ser arrojado con tus dos ojos en la Gehena del fuego.
See to it that you do not despise even one of these little ones. For I say to you, that their Angels in heaven continually look upon the face of my Father, who is in heaven.10 Cuídense de despreciar a cualquiera de estos pequeños, porque les aseguro que sus ángeles en el cielo están constantemente en presencia de mi Padre celestial.
For the Son of man has come to save what had been lost.11 [Porque el Hijo del Hombre ha venido a salvar lo que estaba perdido].
How does it seem to you? If someone has one hundred sheep, and if one of them has gone astray, should he not leave behind the ninety-nine in the mountains, and go out to seek what has gone astray?12 ¿Qué les parece? Si un hombre tiene cien ovejas, y una de ellas se pierde, ¿no deja las noventa y nueve restantes en la montaña, para ir a buscar la que se extravió?
And if he should happen to find it: Amen I say to you, that he has more joy over that one, than over the ninety-nine which did not go astray.13 Y si llega a encontrarla, les aseguro que se alegrará más por ella que por las noventa y nueve que no se extraviaron.
Even so, it is not the will before your Father, who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should be lost.14 De la misma manera, el Padre que está en el cielo no quiere que se pierda ni uno solo de estos pequeños.
But if your brother has sinned against you, go and correct him, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you will have regained your brother.15 Si tu hermano peca, ve y corrígelo en privado. Si te escucha, habrás ganado a tu hermano.
But if he will not listen you, invite with you one or two more, so that every word may stand by the mouth of two or three witnesses.16 Si no te escucha, busca una o dos personas más, para que el asunto se decida por la declaración de dos o tres testigos.
And if he will not listen to them, tell the Church. But if he will not listen to the Church, let him be to you like the pagan and the tax collector.17 Si se niega a hacerles caso, dilo a la comunidad. Y si tampoco quiere escuchar a la comunidad, considéralo como pagano o republicano.
Amen I say to you, whatever you will have bound on earth, shall be bound also in heaven, and whatever you will have released on earth, shall be released also in heaven.18 Les aseguro que todo lo que ustedes aten en la tierra, quedará atado en el cielo, y lo que desaten en la tierra, quedará desatado en el cielo.
Again I say to you, that if two of those among you have agreed on earth, about anything whatsoever that they have requested, it shall be done for them by my Father, who is in heaven.19 También les aseguro que si dos de ustedes se unen en la tierra para pedir algo, mi Padre que está en el cielo se lo concederá.
For wherever two or three are gathered in my name, there am I, in their midst.”20 Porque donde hay dos o tres reunidos en mi Nombre, yo estoy presente en medio de ellos».
Then Peter, drawing near to him, said: “Lord, how many times shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Even seven times?”21 Entonces se adelantó Pedro y le dijo: «Señor, ¿cuántas veces tendré que perdonar a mi hermano las ofensas que me haga? ¿Hasta siete veces?».
Jesus said to him: “I do not say to you, even seven times, but even seventy times seven times.22 Jesús le respondió: «No te digo hasta siete veces, sino hasta setenta veces siete.
Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is compared to a man who was king, who wanted to take account of his servants.23 Por eso, el Reino de los Cielos se parece a un rey que quiso arreglar las cuentas con sus servidores.
And when he had begun taking account, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.24 Comenzada la tarea, le presentaron a uno que debía diez mil talentos.
But since he did not have any way to repay it, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children, and all that he had, in order to repay it.25 Como no podía pagar, el rey mandó que fuera vendido junto con su mujer, sus hijos y todo lo que tenía, para saldar la deuda.
But that servant, falling prostrate, begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will repay it all to you.’26 El servidor se arrojó a sus pies, diciéndole: "Señor, dame un plazo y te pagaré todo".
Then the lord of that servant, being moved with pity, released him, and he forgave his debt.27 El rey se compadeció, lo dejó ir y, además, le perdonó la deuda.
But when that servant departed, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him one hundred denarius. And taking hold of him, he choked him, saying: ‘Repay what you owe.’28 Al salir, este servidor encontró a uno de sus compañeros que le debía cien denarios y, tomándolo del cuello hasta ahogarlo, le dijo: "Págame lo que me debes".
And his fellow servant, falling prostrate, petitioned him, saying: ‘Have patience with me, and I will repay it all to you.’29 El otro se arrojó a sus pies y le suplicó: "Dame un plazo y te pagaré la deuda".
But he was not willing. Instead, he went out and had him sent to prison, until he would repay the debt.30 Pero él no quiso, sino que lo hizo poner en la cárcel hasta que pagara lo que debía.
Now his fellow servants, seeing what was done, were greatly saddened, and they went and reported to their lord all that was done.31 Los demás servidores, al ver lo que había sucedido, se apenaron mucho y fueron a contarlo a su señor.
Then his lord called him, and he said to him: ‘You wicked servant, I forgave you all your debt, because you pleaded with me.32 Este lo mandó llamar y le dijo: "¡Miserable! Me suplicaste, y te perdoné la deuda.
Therefore, should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I also had compassion on you?’33 ¿No debías también tú tener compasión de tu compañero, como yo me compadecí de ti?".
And his lord, being angry, handed him over to the torturers, until he repaid the entire debt.34 E indignado, el rey lo entregó en manos de los verdugos hasta que pagara todo lo que debía.
So, too, shall my heavenly Father do to you, if each one of you will not forgive his brother from your hearts.”35 Lo mismo hará también mi Padre celestial con ustedes, si no perdonan de corazón a sus hermanos».
