And when Balaam had seen that it was pleasing to the Lord that he should bless Israel, he by no means went out as he had gone before, to seek divination. But directing his face opposite the desert,1 Vio Balaam que agradaba a Yahveh bendecir a Israel, y ya no fue como las otras veces al encuentro de los augurios, sino que se volvió cara al desierto.
and lifting up his eyes, he saw Israel dwelling in tents by their tribes. And with the Spirit of God rushing into him,2 Y al alzar los ojos, vio Balaam a Israel acampado por tribus. Y le invadió el espíritu de Dios.
taking up his parable, he said: “Balaam, the son of Beor, the man whose eye has been obstructed,3 Entonó su trova y dijo: «Oráculo de Balaam, hijo de Beor, oráculo del varón clarividente.
the hearer of the sermon of God, he who has gazed upon a vision of the Almighty, he who falls down and so his eyes are opened, has declared:4 Oráculo del que oye los dichos de Dios, del que ve la visión de Sadday del que obtiene respuesta, y se le abren los ojos.
‘How beautiful are your tabernacles, O Jacob, and your tents, O Israel!5 ¡Qué hermosas son tus tiendas, Jacob, y tus moradas, Israel!
They are like forested valleys, like gardens irrigated next to rivers, like tabernacles which the Lord has fixed, like cedars close to waters.6 Como valles espaciosos, como jardines a la vera del río, como áloes que plantó Yahveh, como cedros a la orilla de las aguas.
Water shall flow from his jar, and his offspring shall be amid many waters, because Agag, his king, shall be taken, and his kingdom shall be removed.7 Sale un héroe de su descendencia, domina sobre pueblos numerosos. Se alza su rey por encima de Agag, se alza su reinado.
Away from Egypt, God has led him, whose strength is like the rhinoceros. They shall devour the nations that are his enemies, and break their bones, and pierce them with arrows.8 Dios le hace salir de Egipto, como cuernos de búfalo es para él. Devora el cadáver de sus enemigos y les quebranta los huesos.
Lying down, he has slept like a lion, and like a lioness, whom no one would dare to awaken. He who blesses you, shall himself also be blessed. He who curses you, shall be considered cursed.”9 Se agacha, se acuesta, como león, como leona, ¿quién le hará levantar? ¡Bendito el que te bendiga! ¡Maldito el que te maldiga!»
And Balak, being angry against Balaam, clapped his hands together and said: “I called you to curse my enemies, and, to the contrary, you have blessed them three times.10 Se enfureció Balaq contra Balaam, palmoteó fuertemente, y dijo a Balaam: «Te he llamado para maldecir a mis enemigos y he aquí que los has llenado de bendiciones ya por tercera vez.
Return to your place. I had decided, indeed, to honor you greatly, but the Lord has deprived you of the designated honor.”11 Lárgate ya a tu tierra. Te dije que te colmaría de honores, pero Yahveh te ha privado de ellos.»
Balaam responded to Balak: “Did I not say to your messengers, whom you sent to me:12 Respondió Balaam a Balaq: «¿No les dije yo a los mensajeros que me enviaste:
Even if Balak would give me his house, filled with silver and gold, I still could not go away from the word of the Lord my God, so as to offer anything, either good or evil, from my own heart; but whatever the Lord will speak, this, too, I shall speak.13 “Aunque me diera Balaq su casa llena de plata y oro, no podría salirme de la orden de Yahveh, ni hacer por mi cuenta nada, bueno ni malo; lo que me diga Yahveh, eso es lo que diré?”
Yet truly, as I continue on to my own people, I will give you counsel as to what this people shall do to your people in the end times.”14 Ahora, pues, que me marcho a mi pueblo, ven, que te voy a anunciar lo que hará este pueblo al cabo del tiempo.»
Therefore, taking up his parable, he again spoke: “Balaam the son of Beor, the man whose eye has been obstructed,15 Entonó su trova y dijo: «Oráculo de Balaam, hijo de Beor, oráculo del varón clarividente.
the hearer of the sermon of God, he who knows the doctrine of the Most High, and who sees the visions of the Almighty, who, falling down, has his eyes opened, has declared:16 oráculo del que escucha los dichos de Dios, del que conoce la ciencia del Altísimo; del que ve lo que le hace ver Sadday, del que obtiene la respuesta, y se le abren los ojos.
I shall see him, but not presently. I shall gaze upon him, but not soon. A star shall rise out of Jacob, and a rod shall spring up from Israel. And he shall strike down the commanders of Moab, and he shall devastate all the sons of Seth.17 Lo veo, aunque no para ahora, lo diviso, pero no de cerca: de Jacob avanza una estrella, un cetro surge de Israel. Aplasta las sienes de Moab, el cráneo de todos los hijos de Set.
And he shall possess Idumea; the inheritance of Seir shall fall to their enemies. Yet truly, Israel shall act with strength.18 Será Edom tierra conquistada, tierra conquistada Seír. Israel despliega su poder,
From Jacob will be he who shall be ruler. And he shall perish the remnants of the city.”19 Jacob domina a sus enemigos, aniquila a los fugitivos de Ar.»
And when he saw Amalek, taking up his parable, he said: “Amalek, first among the Gentiles, whose very end shall be perdition.”20 Vio Balaam a Amalec, entonó su trova y dijo: «Primicias de las naciones, Amalec; pero al cabo perecerá para siempre.»
Likewise, he saw the Kainites, and taking up his parable, he said: “Robust, indeed, is your habitation. But though you will set your nest in a rock,21 Vio luego a los quenitas, entonó su trova y dijo: «Firme es tu morada, Caín, en la peña está puesto tu nido.
and you will be elect among the stock of Kain, how long will you be able to remain? For Assur shall take you captive.”22 Pero el nido es de Beor; ¿hasta cuándo te tendrá cautivo Asur?
And taking up his parable once more he said: “Alas! Who will be able to survive, when God will do these things?23 Entonó luego su trova y dijo: Pueblos del Mar reviven por el Norte,
They shall arrive in Greek warships from Italy. They shall overcome the Assyrians, and they shall devastate the Hebrews, and yet, at the very end, even they themselves shall perish.”24 barcos por el lado de Kittim. Oprimen a Asur, oprimen a Héber; también él perecerá para siempre.»
And Balaam rose up, and he returned to his place. Likewise, Balak went back, along the way by which he had arrived.25 Luego se levantó Balaam, y se fue de vuelta a su país. También Balaq se fue por su camino.
