In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar saw a dream, and his spirit was terrified, and his dream fled from him.1 El año segundo del reinado de Nabucodonosor, Nabucodonosor tuvo sueños, y su espíritu se turbó hasta el punto de no poder dormir.
Yet the king commanded that the seers, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans be gathered together to reveal to the king his dreams. When they arrived, they stood in front of the king.2 El rey mandó llamar a los magos y adivinos, encantadores y caldeos para que manifestaran al rey sus sueños. Vinieron ellos y se presentaron al rey.
And the king said to them, “I saw a dream, and, being confused in mind, I do not know what I saw.”3 El rey les dijo: «He tenido un sueño y mi espíritu se ha turbado por el deseo de comprender este sueño».
And the Chaldeans answered the king in Syriac, “O king, live forever. Tell the dream to your servants, and we will reveal its interpretation.”4 Los caldeos respondieron al rey: (Arameo) «¡Viva el rey eternamente! Cuenta el sueño a tus siervos, y nosotros te daremos su interpretación».
And in answer, the king said to the Chaldeans, “The memory of it has slipped away from me. Unless you reveal the dream to me, and its meaning, you will be put to death, and your houses will be confiscated.5 Respondió el rey y dijo a los caldeos: «Tened bien presente mi decisión: si no me dais a conocer el sueño y su interpretación, seréis cortados en pedazos y vuestras casas serán reducidas a escombros.
But if you explain the dream and its meaning, you will receive from me rewards, and gifts, and great honor. Therefore, reveal to me the dream and its interpretation.”6 Pero si me dais a conocer el sueño y su interpretación, recibiréis de mí regalos, obsequios y grandes honores. Así pues, dadme a conocer el sueño y su interpretación».
They answered again and said, “Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will reveal its interpretation.”7 Respondieron ellos por segunda vez: «Cuente el rey el sueño a sus siervos, que nosotros le daremos su interpretación».
The king answered and said, “I am certain that you are stalling for time because you know that the memory of it has slipped away from me.8 Pero el rey replicó: «Bien veo que lo que queréis vosotros es ganar tiempo, sabiendo que mi decisión está tomada.
Therefore, if you do not reveal to me the dream, there is only one conclusion to be reached about you, that the interpretation is likewise false, and packed full of deception, so as to speak before me until the time passes away. And so, tell me the dream, so that I will also know that the interpretation that you tell me is likewise true.”9 Si no me dais a conocer el sueño, una misma será vuestra sentencia. Habéis acordado entre vosotros decirme palabras mentirosas y falsas, mientras cambian los tiempos. Por tanto, indicadme el sueño y sabré que podéis darme su interpretación».
Then the Chaldeans answered before the king, and they said, “There is no man on earth who can accomplish your word, O king. For neither has any king, however great and mighty, asked for an answer of this kind from every seer, and astrologer, and Chaldean.10 Los caldeos respondieron ante el rey: «No hay nadie en el mundo capaz de descubrir lo que quiere el rey; y por eso mismo ningún rey, por grande y poderoso que sea, pregunta jamás cosa semejante a ningún mago, adivino o caldeo.
For the answer that you seek, O king, is very difficult. Neither can anyone be found who can reveal it in the sight of the king, except the gods, whose conversation is not with men.”11 Lo que el rey pide es difícil, y nadie se lo puede descubrir al rey, excepto los dioses; pero ellos no viven entre los seres de carne».
When he heard this, the king commanded, in fury and in great wrath, that all the wise men of Babylon should be destroyed.12 Entonces el rey se enfureció terriblemente y mandó matar a todos los sabios de Babilonia.
And when the decree had gone forth, the wise men were put to death; and Daniel and his companions were sought, to be destroyed.13 Promulgado el decreto de matar a los sabios, se buscó también a Daniel y a sus compañeros para matarlos.
Then Daniel inquired, about the law and the sentence, of Arioch, the general of the king’s army, who had gone forth to execute the wise men of Babylon.14 Pero Daniel se dirigió con palabras sabias y prudentes a Aryok, jefe de la guardia real, que se disponía a matar a los sabios de Babilonia.
And he asked him, who had received the orders of the king, for what reason such a cruel sentence had gone forth from the face of the king. And so, when Arioch had revealed the matter to Daniel,15 Tomó la palabra y dijo a Aryok, oficial del rey: «Por qué ha dado el rey un decreto tan tajante?» Aryok explicó la cosa a Daniel,
Daniel went in and asked of the king that he would grant him time to reveal the solution to the king.16 y Daniel se fue a pedir al rey que se le concediese un plazo para declarar al rey la interpretación.
And he went into his house and explained the task to Hananiah, and Mishael, and Azariah, his companions,17 Daniel regresó a su casa e informó del caso a sus compañeros Ananías, Misael y Azarías,
so that they would seek mercy before the face of the God of heaven, about this mystery, and so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the other wise men of Babylon.18 invitándoles a implorar la misericordia del Dios del Cielo, acerca de este misterio, a fin de que no se diese muerte a Daniel y a sus compañeros con el resto de los sabios de Babilonia.
Then the secret was revealed to Daniel by a vision in the night. And Daniel blessed the God of heaven,19 Entonces el misterio fue revelado a Daniel en una visión nocturna. Y Daniel bendijo al Dios del Cielo.
and speaking aloud, he said, “May the name of the Lord be blessed by the present generation and for ever; for wisdom and fortitude are his.20 Tomó Daniel la palabra y dijo: «Bendito sea el Nombre de Dios por los siglos de los siglos, pues suyos son el saber y la fuerza.
And he alters the times and the ages. He takes away kingdoms and he establishes them. He gives wisdom to those who are wise and teaching skills to those who understand.21 El hace alternar estaciones y tiempos, depone a los reyes, establece a los reyes, da a los sabios sabiduría, y ciencia a los que saben discernir.
He reveals deep and hidden things, and he knows what has been established in darkness. And the light is with him.22 El revela honduras y secretos, conoce lo que ocultan las tinieblas, y la luz mora junto a él.
To you, God of our fathers, I confess, and you, I praise. For you have given wisdom and fortitude to me, and now you have revealed to me what we asked of you, for you have uncovered for us the king’s thoughts.”23 A ti, Dios de mis padres, doy yo gracias y alabo, porque me has concedido sabiduría y fuerza; y ahora me has dado a conocer lo que te habíamos pedido, la cosa del rey nos has dado a conocer».
After this, Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and he spoke to him in this way, “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon. Bring me in before the king, and I will explain the solution to the king.”24 Después Daniel se fue donde Aryok, a quien el rey había encomendado la matanza de los sabios de Babilonia. Entró y le dijo: «No mates a los sabios de Babilonia. Llévame a la presencia del rey y yo declararé al rey la interpretación».
Then Arioch quickly brought Daniel to the king, and he said to him, “I have found a man of the sons of the transmigration of Judah, who would announce the solution to the king.”25 Aryok se apresuró a introducir a Daniel ante el rey y le dijo: «He encontrado entre los deportados de Judá un hombre que puede dar a conocer al rey la interpretación».
The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Do you really think that you can reveal to me the dream that I saw and its interpretation?”26 Tomó el rey la palabra y dijo a Daniel (por sobrenombre Beltsassar): «¿Eres tú capaz de darme a conocer el sueño que he tenido y su interpretación?»
And Daniel, facing the king, answered and said, “The secret that the king seeks, the wise men, the seers, and the soothsayers are unable to reveal to the king.27 Daniel tomó la palabra en presencia del rey y dijo: «El misterio que el rey quiere saber, no hay sabios, adivinos, magos ni astrólogos que lo puedan revelar al rey;
But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, who has revealed to you, king Nebuchadnezzar, what will happen in the latter times.
You, O king, began to think, while in your blanket, about what will be hereafter. And he who reveals secrets showed you what will happen.29 «Oh rey, los pensamientos que agitaban tu mente en el lecho se referían a lo que ha de suceder en el futuro, y el que revela los misterios te ha dado a conocer lo que sucederá.
To me, likewise, this mystery is revealed, not according to the wisdom that is in me more than in other living things, but so that the interpretation might be made manifest to the king, and so that you may know the thoughts of your mind.30 A mí, sin que yo posea más sabiduría que cualquier otro ser viviente, se me ha revelado este misterio con el solo fin de dar a conocer al rey su interpretación y de que tú conozcas los pensamientos de tu corazón.
You, O king, saw, and behold, something like a great statue. This statue, which was great and high, stood exalted above you, and you considered how terrible it was.31 «Tú, oh rey, has tenido esta visión: una estatua, una enorme estatua, de extraordinario brillo, de aspecto terrible, se levantaba ante ti.
The head of this statue was of the finest gold, but the breast and the arms were of silver, and further on, the belly and the thighs were of brass;32 La cabeza de esta estatua era de oro puro, su pecho y sus brazos de plata, su vientre y sus lomos de bronce,
but the shins were of iron, a certain part of the feet were of iron and another part were of clay.33 sus piernas de hierro, sus pies parte de hierro y parte de arcilla.
And so you looked until a stone was broken off without hands from a mountain, and it struck the statue on its feet, which were of iron and clay, and it shattered them.34 Tú estabas mirando, cuando de pronto una piedra se desprendió, sin intervención de mano alguna, vino a dar a la estatua en sus pies de hierro y arcilla, y los pulverizó.
Then the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold were crushed together and diminished like the ashes of a summer courtyard, and they were quickly taken away by the wind, and no place was found for them; but the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.35 Entonces quedó pulverizado todo a la vez: hierro, arcilla, bronce, plata y oro; quedaron como el tamo de la era en verano, y el viento se lo llevó sin dejar rastro. Y la piedra que había golpeado la estatua se convirtió en un gran monte que llenó toda la tierra.
This is the dream; we will also tell its interpretation before you, O king.36 Tal fue el sueño: ahora diremos ante el rey su interpretación.
You are a king among kings, and the God of heaven has given to you a kingdom, and fortitude, and power, and glory,37 Tú, oh rey, rey de reyes, a quien el Dios del cielo ha dado reino, fuerza, poder y gloria
and all the places wherein the sons of men and the beasts of the field dwell. He has likewise given the flying creatures of the air into your hand, and he has placed all things under your realm. Therefore, you are the head of gold.38 - los hijos de los hombres, las bestias del campo, los pájaros del cielo, dondequiera que habiten, los ha dejado en tus manos y te ha hecho soberano de ellos -, tú eres la cabeza de oro.
And after you, another kingdom will rise up, inferior to you, of silver, and another third kingdom of brass, which will rule over the whole world.39 Después de ti surgirá otro reino, inferior a ti, y luego un tercer reino, de bronce, que dominará la tierra entera.
And the fourth kingdom will be like iron. Just as iron shatters and conquers all things, so will it shatter and crush all these.40 Y habrá un cuarto reino, duro como el hierro, como el hierro que todo lo pulveriza y machaca: como el hierro qué aplasta, así él pulverizará y aplastará a todos los otros.
Furthermore, because you saw the feet and the toes to be part of potter’s clay and part of iron, the kingdom will be divided, but still, from the slip of iron it will take its origin, since you saw the iron mingled with the earthenware from clay.41 Y lo que has visto, los pies y los dedos, parte de arcilla de alfarero y parte de hierro, es un reino que estará dividido; tendrá la solidez del hierro, según has visto el hierro mezclado con la masa de arcilla.
And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, part the kingdom will be strong and part will be crushed.42 Los dedos de los pies, parte de hierro y parte de arcilla, es que el reino será en parte fuerte y en parte fragil.
Yet, because you saw the iron mingled with pottery from the earth, they will indeed be combined together with the offspring of man, but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron cannot be mixed with earthenware.43 Y lo que has visto: el hierro mezclado con la masa de arcilla, es que se mezclarán ellos entre sí por simiente humana, pero no se aglutinarán el uno al otro, de la misma manera que el hierro no se mezcla con la arcilla.
But in the days of those kingdoms, the God of heaven will inspire a kingdom that will never be destroyed, and his kingdom will not be handed over to another people, and it will crush and will consume all these kingdoms, and this kingdom itself will stand in eternity.44 En tiempo de estos reyes, el Dios del cielo hará surgir un reino que jamás será destruido, y este reino no pasará a otro pueblo. Pulverizará y aniquilará a todos estos reinos, y él subsistirá eternamente:
In accordance with what you saw, because the stone was torn away from the mountain without hands, and it crushed the earthenware, and the iron, and the brass, and the silver, and the gold, the great God has shown the king what will happen after this.
Then king Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and adored Daniel, and he commanded that they should offer in sacrifice to him victims and incense.46 Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor cayó rostro en tierra, se postró ante Daniel, y ordenó que se le ofreciera oblación y calmante aroma.
And so the king spoke with Daniel and said, “Truly, your God is the God of gods, and Lord of kings, and also a revealer of secrets, since you could uncover this mystery.”47 El rey tomó la palabra y dijo a Daniel: «Verdaderamente vuestro Dios es el Dios de los dioses y el señor de los reyes, el revelador de los misterios, ya que tú has podido revelar este misterio».
Then the king raised Daniel to a high rank and gave him many great gifts, and he appointed him as leader over all the provinces of Babylon and as chief of the magistrates over all the other wise men of Babylon.48 Y el rey confirió a Daniel un alto rango y le dio muchos y magníficos regalos. Le hizo gobernador de toda la provincia de Babilonia y jefe supremo de todos los sabios de Babilonia.
However, Daniel required of the king that he appoint Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the works of the province of Babylon. But Daniel himself was at the king’s door.49 Daniel pidió al rey que encargara de la administración de la provincia de Babilonia a Sadrak, Mesak y Abed Negó, quedando Daniel en la corte del rey.
