Jeremiah 6

1 “O sons of Benjamin, be strengthened in the midst of Jerusalem, and sound the trumpet in Tekoa, and lift up a banner over the house of Haccherem. For an evil has been seen from the north, with great destruction.	1 Fuyez, fils de Benjamin, sortez de Jérusalem. Sonnez du cor à Tékoa, dressez un signal sur Beth-Ha-Kérem, car un malheur vient du Nord, une véritable catastrophe.
2 I have compared the daughter of Zion to a beautiful and delicate woman.	2 N’étais-tu pas, fille de Sion, une prairie délicieuse?
3 The pastors will come to her with their flocks. They have pitched their tents against her all around. Each one will feed those who are under his hand.	3 Des bergers y arrivent avec leurs troupeaux, ils piquent leurs tentes tout autour, et chacun y fait paître son troupeau.
4 ‘Sanctify a war against her! Rise up together, and let us ascend at midday.’ ‘Woe to us! For the day has declined; for the shadows of the evening have grown longer.’	4 Engagez contre elle une guerre sainte, debout, il fait jour, montons à l’assaut! Malheur à nous! Déjà le jour baisse et les ombres du soir s’allongent.
5 ‘Rise up, and let us ascend in the night, and let us destroy her houses.’ ”	5 Alors faisons l’assaut de nuit, car il nous faut détruire ses forts.
6 For thus says the Lord of hosts: “Cut down her trees, and build a rampart around Jerusalem. This is the city of visitation! Every kind of false claim is in her midst.	6 Voici ce que dit Yahvé Sabaot: Abattez les arbres, dressez contre Jérusalem des palissades, car cette ville doit rendre des comptes, tout en elle est oppression.
7 Just as a cistern makes its water cold, so has she made her wickedness cold. Iniquity and devastation will be heard in her; sickness and wounds will be ever before me.	7 Comme la source fait jaillir son eau, d’elle sort sa méchanceté. On n’y entend parler que d’abus, de violence et je n’y vois jamais que plaies et coups.
8 O Jerusalem, accept instruction, lest perhaps my soul may withdraw from you; lest perhaps I may set you in a desert, in an uninhabitable land.”	8 Reprends-toi, Jérusalem! Ou bien je me détacherai de toi, je ferai de toi un désert, une terre inhabitée.
9 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “They will gather the remnant of Israel, even as a single cluster of grapes is gathered from a vine. Direct your hand, as a grape-gatherer directs his hand to the basket.	9 Voici ce que dit Yahvé Sabaot: On grappillera comme une vigne ce qui restera d’Israël, comme le vendangeur passe la main sur les pieds de sa vigne.
10 To whom should I speak, and to whom should I testify, so as to be heard? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, and so they are unable to hear. Behold, for them, the word of the Lord has become a disgrace. And so they will not accept it.	10 À qui puis-je parler? M’écoutera-t-on si j’insiste? Leurs oreilles ont besoin d’une circoncision: elles sont incapables d’attention. La parole de Yahvé est devenue pour eux un sujet de moqueries; ils n’en veulent pas.
11 For this reason, I have been filled with the fury of the Lord. I labor to bear it. Let it be poured out upon the child outside, or upon a group of young men meeting together. For a man will be taken captive with a woman, an elder will be taken captive with one who is full of days.	11 Et moi je suis rempli de la colère de Yahvé, je n’en peux plus de la retenir! “Déverse-la sur les enfants dans la rue, ou sur le groupe des jeunes! Le mari et sa femme seront pris ensemble, et le plus âgé avec celui qui ne l’est pas.
12 And their houses will be given over to others, with both their lands and their wives. For I will extend my hand over the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord.	12 Leurs maisons, leurs champs et leurs femmes passeront à d’autres, car je vais lever ma main contre les habitants du pays - parole de Yahvé.”
13 Certainly, from the least of them even to the greatest, all of them practice greed. And from the prophet even to the priest, all of them act with deceit.	13 Tous sont des malhonnêtes, du plus petit jusqu’au plus grand; prophètes ou prêtres, tous mentent.
14 And they healed the destruction of the daughter of my people with disgrace, by saying: ‘Peace, peace.’ And there was no peace.	14 Ils ne font que couvrir la blessure de mon peuple et promettent la paix, alors qu’il n’y a pas de paix.
15 They were confounded, because they committed an abomination. Or rather, they were not confounded with shame, because they did not know how to blush. For this reason, they will fall among those who are being destroyed. In the time of their visitation, they will fall, says the Lord.”	15 Ils ne rougissent pas de commettre ces horreurs, car ils ne savent même plus rougir, ils ne savent plus ce que c’est que la honte! C’est pourquoi ils seront au nombre des victimes, ils tomberont le jour où je les visiterai - parole de Yahvé.”
16 Thus says the Lord: “Stand above the ways, and see and ask, about the ancient paths, as to which is the good way, and then walk in it. And you will find refreshment for your souls. But they said: ‘We will not walk.’	16 Voici ce que dit Yahvé: “Revenez au point de départ et renseignez-vous sur les chemins d’autrefois: quel est le chemin du salut? Et puis suivez-le, et vous trouverez du repos pour vos âmes.” Mais voici qu’ils répondent: “Non, nous ne le prendrons pas!”
17 And I appointed watchers over you, saying: ‘Listen for the sound of the trumpet.’ And they said: ‘We will not listen.’	17 J’ai placé à côté de vous des sentinelles: “Faites attention si la trompette sonne!” Mais ils ont répondu: “Non, nous n’y ferons pas attention!”
18 For this reason, hear, O Gentiles, and know, O congregation, how much I will do to them.	18 C’est pourquoi nations, écoutez, que l’assemblée des peuples le sache,
19 Hear, O earth! Behold, I will lead evils over this people, as the fruits of their own thoughts. For they have not listened to my words, and they have cast aside my law.	19 et toi, terre, écoute: Je vais faire venir un malheur sur ce peuple, et ce sera le fruit de leur infidélité; car ils n’ont pas été attentifs à ma parole et ils ont rejeté ma loi.
20 For what reason are you bringing me frankincense from Sheba, and sweet smelling reeds from a far away land? Your holocausts are not acceptable, and your sacrifices are not pleasing to me.”	20 Que m’importe l’encens importé de Chéba et le roseau parfumé importé d’un pays lointain? Vos holocaustes ne me plaisent pas, vos sacrifices ne me sont pas agréables.
21 Therefore, thus says the Lord: “Behold I will bring this people to utter ruin, and they will fall, with their fathers and sons; neighbor and relative will perish together.”	21 C’est pourquoi, voici ce que dit Yahvé: Je vais mettre des pierres sur leur chemin, ils trébucheront et périront tous ensemble, le père avec son fils, l’homme et son compagnon.
22 Thus says the Lord: “Behold, a people is coming from the land of the north, and a great nation will rise up from the ends of the earth.	22 Ainsi parle Yahvé: Un peuple arrive du nord, une grande nation se lève des extrémités de la terre.
23 They will take hold of arrow and shield. They are cruel, and they will not take pity. Their voice will roar like the ocean. And they will climb upon horses, for they have been prepared like men for battle, against you, O daughter of Zion.	23 Ce sont des barbares sans pitié, qui savent manier l’arc et le javelot. On dirait le grondement de la mer: ils arrivent sur leurs chevaux comme un seul homme, prêts à combattre, fille de Sion.
24 ‘We have heard of their fame. Our hands have become weakened. Tribulation has overtaken us, like the pains of a woman giving birth.’	24 Quand nous avons appris la nouvelle, nos mains sont restées sans force, l’inquiétude nous a saisis, une douleur comme celle de la femme qui enfante.
25 Do not choose to go out into the fields, and you should not walk along the roadway. For the sword and the terror of the enemy is on every side.	25 Ne sortez pas dans les champs, ne vous aventurez pas sur les routes, car l’épée de l’ennemi est là: c’est la terreur de tous côtés.
26 Wrap yourself in haircloth, O daughter of my people. And sprinkle yourself with ashes. Make a mourning for yourself, as for an only son, a bitter lamentation: ‘for the destroyer will overwhelm us suddenly.’	26 Habille-toi d’un sac, fille de mon peuple, roule-toi dans la cendre et porte le deuil comme pour un fils unique, pousse des lamentations déchirantes, car d’un seul coup le dévastateur est là sur nous.
27 I have presented you as a strong tester among my people. And you will test and know their way.	27 Je t’ai demandé de passer au creuset mon peuple, de connaître et d’éprouver leur conduite.
28 All these leaders who are turning away and walking deceitfully, they are brass and iron; they have all been corrupted.	28 Ce sont tous des rebelles, ils ont la tête dure comme le bronze ou le fer; ils ne font tous que détruire.
29 The bellows has failed; the lead has been consumed by fire; the molten metal was melted to no purpose. For their wickedness has not been consumed.	29 Le soufflet a soufflé si fort que le plomb a disparu dans le feu; mais le fondeur a perdu ses efforts car les impuretés ne sont pas parties.
30 Call them: ‘Rejected silver.’ For the Lord has cast them aside.”	30 On les appellera “argent de balayures” car Yahvé les a mis aux ordures.
