CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
The vision of Isaiah, the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Joatham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.1 The vision which Isaiah, son of Amoz, had concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
Listen, O heavens, and pay attention, O earth, for the Lord has spoken. I have nurtured and raised children, but they have spurned me.2 Hear, O heavens, and listen, O earth, for the LORD speaks: Sons have I raised and reared, but they have disowned me!
An ox knows his owner, and a donkey knows the manger of his lord, but Israel has not known me, and my people have not understood.3 An ox knows its owner, and an ass, its master's manger; But Israel does not know, my people has not understood.
Woe to a sinful nation, a people burdened by iniquity, a wicked offspring, accursed children. They have abandoned the Lord. They have blasphemed the Holy One of Israel. They been taken away backwards.4 Ah! sinful nation, people laden with wickedness, evil race, corrupt children! They have forsaken the LORD, spurned the Holy One of Israel, apostatized.
For what reason shall I continue to strike you, as you increase transgressions? The entire head is feeble, and the entire heart is grieving.5 Where would you yet be struck, you that rebel again and again? The whole head is sick, the whole heart faint.
From the sole of the foot, even to the top of the head, there is no soundness within. Wounds and bruises and swelling sores: these are not bandaged, nor treated with medicine, nor soothed with oil.6 From the sole of the foot to the head there is no sound spot: Wound and welt and gaping gash, not drained, or bandaged, or eased with salve.
Your land is desolate. Your cities have been set ablaze. Foreigners devour your countryside in your sight, and it will become desolate, as if devastated by enemies.7 Your country is waste, your cities burnt with fire; Your land before your eyes strangers devour (a waste, like Sodom overthrown)--
And the daughter of Zion will be left behind, like an arbor in a vineyard, and like a shelter in a cucumber field, and like a city being laid to waste.8 And daughter Zion is left like a hut in a vineyard, Like a shed in a melon patch, like a city blockaded.
If the Lord of hosts had not bequeathed us offspring, we would have been like Sodom, and we would have been comparable to Gomorrah.9 Unless the LORD of hosts had left us a scanty remnant, We had become as Sodom, we should be like Gomorrah.
Listen to the Word of the Lord, you leaders of the people of Sodom. Listen closely to the law of our God, O people of Gomorrah.10 Hear the word of the LORD, princes of Sodom! Listen to the instruction of our God, people of Gomorrah!
The multitude of your sacrifices, what is that to me, says the Lord? I am full. I do not desire holocausts of rams, nor the fat of fatlings, nor the blood of calves and of lambs and of he-goats.11 What care I for the number of your sacrifices? says the LORD. I have had enough of whole-burnt rams and fat of fatlings; In the blood of calves, lambs and goats I find no pleasure.
When you approach before my sight, who is it that requires these things from your hands, so that you would walk in my courts?12 When you come in to visit me, who asks these things of you?
You should no longer offer sacrifice vain. Incense is an abomination to me. The new moons and the Sabbaths and the other feast days, I will not receive. Your gatherings are iniquitous.13 Trample my courts no more! Bring no more worthless offerings; your incense is loathsome to me. New moon and sabbath, calling of assemblies, octaves with wickedness: these I cannot bear.
My soul hates your days of proclamation and your solemnities. They have become bothersome to me. I labor to endure them.14 Your new moons and festivals I detest; they weigh me down, I tire of the load.
And so, when you extend your hands, I will avert my eyes from you. And when you multiply your prayers, I will not heed you. For your hands are full of blood.15 When you spread out your hands, I close my eyes to you; Though you pray the more, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood!
Wash, become clean, take away the evil of your intentions from my eyes. Cease to act perversely.16 Wash yourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes; cease doing evil;
Learn to do good. Seek judgment, support the oppressed, judge for the orphan, defend the widow.17 learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan's plea, defend the widow.
And then approach and accuse me, says the Lord. Then, if your sins are like scarlet, they shall be made white like snow; and if they are red like vermillion, they shall become white like wool.18 Come now, let us set things right, says the LORD: Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow; Though they be crimson red, they may become white as wool.
If you are willing, and you listen to me, then you will eat the good things of the land.19 If you are willing, and obey, you shall eat the good things of the land;
But if you are not willing, and you provoke me to anger, then the sword will devour you. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.20 But if you refuse and resist, the sword shall consume you: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken!
How has the faithful city, full of judgment, become a harlot? Justice lived in her, but now murderers.21 How has she turned adulteress, the faithful city, so upright! Justice used to lodge within her, but now, murderers.
Your silver has turned into dross. Your wine has been mixed with water.22 Your silver is turned to dross, your wine is mixed with water.
Your leaders are unfaithful, the associates of thieves. They all love gifts; they pursue rewards. They do not judge for orphans, and the widow’s case is not brought before them.23 Your princes are rebels and comrades of thieves; Each one of them loves a bribe and looks for gifts. The fatherless they defend not, and the widow's plea does not reach them.
Because of this, the Lord God of hosts, the Strength of Israel, says: Ah! I will be consoled over my enemies, and I will be vindicated from my adversaries.24 Now, therefore, says the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: Ah! I will take vengeance on my foes and fully repay my enemies!
And I will turn my hand to you. And I will temper your dross unto purity, and I will take away all your tin.25 I will turn my hand against you, and refine your dross in the furnace, removing all your alloy.
And I will restore your judges, so that they will be as before, and your counselors as in times long past. After this, you shall be called the City of the Just, the Faithful City.26 I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as in the beginning; After that you shall be called city of justice, faithful city.
Zion will be redeemed in judgment, and they will lead her back to justice.27 Zion shall be redeemed by judgment, and her repentant ones by justice.
And he shall crush the accursed and sinners together. And those who have abandoned the Lord will be consumed.28 Rebels and sinners alike shall be crushed, those who desert the LORD shall be consumed.
For they shall be confounded because of the idols, to which they have sacrificed. And you shall be ashamed over the gardens that you chose,29 You shall be ashamed of the terebinths which you prized, and blush for the groves which you chose.
when you were like an oak with falling leaves, and like a garden without water.30 You shall become like a tree with falling leaves, like a garden that has no water.
And your strength will be like the embers from stubble, and your work will be like a spark, and both will burn together, and there will be no one to extinguish it.31 The strong man shall turn to tow, and his work shall become a spark; Both shall burn together, and there shall be none to quench the flames.
