CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
The firmament on high is his beauty; it is the beauty of heaven in a vision of glory.1 Orgullo del cielo es la limpidez del firmamento, y la bóveda celeste es un magnífico espectáculo.
The sun, at its appearance, announces its journey; it is an instrument of wonder, a work of the Most High.2 El sol, cuando aparece, proclama a su salida qué admirable es la obra del Altísimo.
At midday, it scorches the earth. And in the presence of its heat, who would be able to endure? It is like the custodian of a furnace in its works of heat.3 Al mediodía reseca la tierra, ¿y quién puede resistir su ardor?
In three ways, the sun acts: scorching the mountains, emitting fiery rays, and shining with its beams that can blind the eyes.4 Se atiza el horno para la forja, pero tres veces más abrasa el sol las montañas; él exhala los vapores ardientes y con el brillo de sus rayos enceguece los ojos.
Great is the Lord who made it, and at his word, it hurries on its journey.5 ¡Qué grande es el Señor que lo ha creado! A una orden suya, él emprende su rápida carrera.
And the moon, in all its phases, serves to mark the seasons and to be a sign of the times.6 También la luna, siempre en el momento preciso, marca las épocas y señala los tiempos.
From the moon is the sign of a feast day; it is a light which diminishes at its consummation.7 Su curso determina las fiestas: es un astro que decrece después de su plenilunio.
A month is named according to its phases, increasing wonderfully at its culmination.8 De ella recibe su nombre el mes; ella crece admirablemente en sus ciclos, es la insignia de los ejércitos acampados en las alturas, que brilla en el firmamento del cielo.
It is an instrument of the armies on high, shining gloriously in the firmament of heaven.9 La gloria de los astros es la hermosura del cielo, un adorno luminoso en las alturas del Señor:
The glory of the stars is the beauty of heaven; the Lord illuminates the world from on high.10 por la palabra del Santo, se mantienen en orden y no defeccionan de sus puestos de guardia.
At the words of the Holy One, they stand for judgment, and they will never fail in their vigilance.11 Mira el arco iris y bendice al que lo hizo: ¡qué magnífico esplendor!
Consider the rainbow, and bless the One who made it; it is very beautiful in its splendor.12 El traza en el cielo una aureola de gloria; lo han tendido las manos del Altísimo.
It encompasses the heavens with the circle of its glory; the hands of the Most High made it appear.13 A una orden suya cae la nieve, y él lanza los rayos que ejecutan sus decretos;
By his order, he hastens the snow, and he spurs on the lightning to express his judgment.14 es así como se abren las reservas y las nubes vuelan como pájaros.
In like manner, his storehouses are opened, and the clouds fly out like birds.15 Con su gran poder, condensa las nubes, que se pulverizan en granizo.
By his greatness, he has positioned the clouds, and the hailstones have been broken.
At his glance, the mountains will be shaken, and by his will, the south wind will blow.
The voice of his thunder will reverberate through the earth, by a storm from the north, and by a gathering of the whirlwind.18 Como bandada de pájaros, él esparce la nieve y, al bajar, ella se posa como la langosta; el resplandor de su blancura deslumbra los ojos y el espíritu se embelesa al verla caer.
And like the birds landing in a flock upon the earth, he sends down the snow; and its descent is like the arrival of a swarm of locusts.19 Como sal sobre la tierra, él derrama la escarcha y, al congelarse, ella se convierte en espinas punzantes.
The eye is in wonder at the beauty of its whiteness, and the heart is astonished at its falling.20 Sopla el viento frío del norte y el hielo se congela sobre el agua, se posa sobre toda masa de agua y la reviste como de una coraza,
He will pour out frost like salt upon the earth. And when it freezes, it will become like the tops of thistles.21 Otro viento devora las montañas, abrasa el desierto y consume la hierba como un fuego.
The cold north wind blows, and the water freezes into crystals; it will rest upon every gathering of water, and it will clothe the water like a breastplate.22 Una niebla repentina pone remedio a todo eso, y el rocío refresca después del viento abrasador.
And it will devour the mountains, and burn the wilderness, and extinguish the greenery, like a fire.23 Conforme a su designio, él dominó el Abismo, y allí plantó las islas.
Relief for all is in the hurried arrival of a cloud. And the lowly dew will arrive to meet the heat and overpower it.24 Los que navegan por el mar cuentan sus peligros y sus relatos nos parecen increíbles:
At his word, the wind grows quiet, and by his thought, he appeases the abyss, for the Lord has planted islands in it.25 allí hay cosas extrañas y maravillosas, animales de todas clases y monstruos marinos.
Let those who navigate the sea describe its perils. And when we have heard it with our ears, we will wonder.26 Gracias a él, su mensajero llega a buen puerto, y por su palabra se ordenan todas las cosas.
There are illustrious and wondrous works: the various kinds of wild animals, and all manner of cattle, and the great creatures of the sea.27 Por mucho que digamos, nunca acabaremos; en una sola palabra: él lo es todo.
Through him, the end of their journey is confirmed, and by his word, all things fit together.28 ¿Dónde hallar la fuerza para glorificarlo? Porque él es el Grande, superior a todas sus obras,
We can say much, and yet still lack for words. But the consummation of our words is this: He is in all things.29 Señor temible y soberanamente grande: su poder es admirable.
What would we be able to do to glorify him? For the Almighty himself is above all his own works.30 ¡Glorifiquen al Señor, exáltenlo cuanto puedan, y él siempre estará por encima! Para exaltarlo, redoblen sus fuerzas, no se cansen, porque nunca acabarán.
The Lord is terrible, and exceedingly great, and his power is wonderful.31 ¿Quién lo ha visto, para poder describirlo? ¿Quién la alabará conforme a lo que es?
Glorify the Lord as much as you are able, yet still he will far exceed this. For his magnificence is beyond wonder.32 Hay muchas cosas ocultas más grandes todavía, porque sólo hemos visto algunas de sus obras.
Bless the Lord and exalt him, as much as you are able. But he is beyond all praise.33 El Señor ha hecho todas las cosas y a los hombres buenos les dio la sabiduría.
When you exalt him, use all your ability, and do not cease in this labor. For you can never comprehend him.
Who will see him and explain? And who will magnify him, as he is from the beginning?
There are many things, hidden from us, which are greater than these things. For we have seen but a few of his works.
But the Lord has made all things, and he has given wisdom to those who act with piety.
