1 How much better is it to reprove, than to become angry, so as not to hinder him who may confess in prayer.	1 Quanto è meglio il riprendere, e non proibir di parlare a chi con fessa (la colpa), che il nudrir l'ira!
2 The lust of an eunuch will deflower a young maiden;	2 Un impudico eunuco disonora una verginella:
3 similar is he who by violence gives an iniquitous judgment.	3 Cosi taluno iniquamente viola la giustizia.
4 How good it is, when you are corrected, to show contrition! For in this way, you will escape deliberate sin.	4 Quanto buona cosa ell' è nella correzione dimostrar pentimento! perocchè così tu fuggirai il peccato volontario.
5 There is one who, by remaining silent, is found to be wise. And there is another who is hateful and who provokes by speaking out.	5 V'ha chi saggio dimostrasi col tacere: ed havvi chi è odioso per la intemperanza del parlare.
6 There is one who, not having the understanding to speak, remains silent. And there is another who remains silent, knowing the proper time.	6 Uno si tace, perché non ha senno per parlare; e uno si tace, perché sa qual'è il tempo approposito.
7 A wise man will remain silent until the proper time. But an unrestrained and imprudent person will not heed the times.	7 L'uomo saggio tacerà fino a un dato tempo; ma l'uomo vano, e l'imprudente non badano al tempo.
8 Whoever uses many words will wound his own soul. And whoever unjustly takes authority upon himself will be hated.	8 Chi molto parla, farà danno all'anima propria, e chi si arroga ingiusto potere, sarà odiato.
9 There is advancement in evil for an undisciplined man, and there is a plan which turns to his detriment.	9 La prosperità è un male per l'uomo scorretto: e i tesori trovati gli diveutan dannosi.
10 There is a gift which is not helpful, and there is a gift, the repayment for which is double.	10 Tal dono v'ha, che è inutile; e ve n'ha tale, che ha doppia mercede.
11 There is a loss for the sake of boasting, and there is one who will lift up his head from lowliness.	11 Taluno nell'esaltazione trova l'abbassamento; e a un altro l'umiliazione giova per innalzarsi.
12 There is one who buys much for a small price, and who pays it back sevenfold.	12 Taluno compera molte cose a vii prezzo; ma poi gli tocca a pagarne il settuplo.
13 Anyone wise in words makes himself loved. But the graces of the foolish will be poured away.	13 Il saggio si rende amabile con sue parole, ma le grazie degli stolti sono gettate.
14 A gift from the unwise will not benefit you. For his gaze is divided, sevenfold.	14 Il dono dello stolte non sarà utile a te; perocché egli ha sette occhi:
15 He will give little, and reproach much. And the opening of his mouth is like a burning flame.	15 Ei darà poco, e molti farà rimproveri, e aperta la bocca, getterà fuoco.
16 There is one who lends today and demands repayment tomorrow. A man such as this is hateful.	16 Egli è uno, che oggi da in prestito, e ridimanda domane: un tal uomo è odioso.
17 A foolish man will not have a friend, and there will be no thanks for his good deeds.	17 Lo stolto non avrà un amico, e i suoi doni non saranno graditi:
18 For those who eat his bread have a false tongue. How often and how many are those who will ridicule him!	18 Conciossiachè quelli, che mangiano il pane di lui sono falsi di lingua: e quanti, e quanto spesso si burleranno di lui?
19 For what he possesses, he does not distribute with correct understanding. And he acts similarly with what he does not possess.	19 Perché egli senza giudizio dona o quello, che dovea serbare, e quello ancora, che non doveva serbare.
20 The slip of a false tongue is like someone who falls upon pavement. Such a fall for the wicked will arrive quickly.	20 Le cadute della lingua fallace, sono come di chi cade dal tetto; così repentina sarà la caduta dei cattivi.
21 A disagreeable man is like a pointless fable; it will be continually in the mouth of the undisciplined.	21 L'uomo sgraziato è come una favola senza sugo di quelle, che van sempre per le bocche di gente mal allevata.
22 A parable from the mouth of a fool will be rejected. For he does not speak it at the proper time.	22 La parabola non ha grazia in bocca dello stolto, perché egli la dice fuori di tempo.
23 There is one who is prevented from sinning by poverty, and in his rest, he will be vexed.	23 V'ha chi non pecca, perché non ne ha il modo, e si cruccia di stare nell'inazione.
24 There is one who will lose his own soul because of pretense, and he will lose it by an example of imprudence. For by seeking the approval of another, he will destroy himself.	24 V'ha chi manda in rovina l'anima propria per uman rispetto, e la rovina in grazia di un imprudente, e per riguardo ad un tal uomo si perde.
25 There is one who, for the sake of what other’s think, makes a promise to a friend, and so he gains him as an enemy for no reason.	25 V'ha chi per uman rispetto promette all'amico, e il guadagno, che ne ha, è di farselo gratuitamente nimico.
26 A lie is a wicked disgrace to a man, and yet lies will be continually in the mouths of those without discipline.	26 Pessimo vitupero dell'uomo ella è la bugia, ma questa sta di continuo nella bocca dei male allevati.
27 A thief is better than a man who constantly lies. But both of them will inherit perdition.	27 E men cattivo il ladro, che il mentitore perpetuo: tua e l'uno, e l'altro avranno in retaggio la perdizione.
28 The habits of lying men are without honor. And their shame is with them without ceasing.	28 I costumi de' mentitori sono disonorati, e si sta sempre con essi la loro ignominia.
29 A wise man will benefit himself by his own words, and a prudent man will please the powerful.	29 Il saggio col suo parlare si accredita, e l'uom prudente sarà accetto ai magnati.
30 Whoever works his land will raise high a stockpile of grain. And whoever works justice will himself be raised high. Yet truly, whoever pleases the powerful will escape unfair treatment.	30 Chi coltiva la sua terra, farà più alto cumulo di grasce: e chi fa opere di giustizia sarà esaltato; e chi è accetto ai magnati, fuggirà l'iniquità.
31 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of judges, and silence their mouths, turning them aside from their task of correction.	31 I regali, è i donativi accecano gli animi de' giudici, e rattengono le loro riprensioni, facendoli come mutoli.
32 Wisdom hidden, and treasure unseen: of what use is either of these?	32 La sapienza, che si tiene occulta, e il tesoro, che non si vede, a che giovano l'una, e l'altro?
33 He who hides his foolishness is better than a man who conceals his wisdom.	33 E più da stimarsi chi nasconde la sua stoltezza, che chi tiene occulto il suo sapere.
