Sirach 11

1 The wisdom of one who is humble will exalt his head, and will cause him to sit down in the midst of great men.	1 Le pauvre, s’il est un sage, va la tête haute; il a sa place parmi les notables.
2 You should not praise a man for his beauty, and you should not despise a man for his appearances.	2 Ne t’emballe pas pour quelqu’un parce qu’il se présente bien, ne prends personne en dégoût pour son seul aspect.
3 The bee is small among flying things, but its fruit holds the summit of sweetness.	3 L’abeille est fort petite parmi la gent ailée, mais vient la première pour la douceur de son miel.
4 You should not glory in clothing at any time, and you should not let yourself be extolled in the day of your honor. For the works of the Most High alone are wondrous; and glorious and hidden and unseen are his works.	4 Ne tire pas vanité de l’habit que tu portes, ne sois pas orgueilleux parce que les gens t’honorent; sais-tu ce que le Seigneur prépare sans qu’on le remarque?
5 Many tyrants have sat upon a throne, and one whom no one would admire has worn a diadem.	5 Bien des dictateurs ont été renversés, et la couronne est allée à celui qu’on n’attendait pas.
6 Many powerful men have been powerfully cast down, and the illustrious have been handed over into the hands of others.	6 Beaucoup qui étaient puissants ont tout perdu, des gens dont tout le monde parlait sont tombés aux mains d’un nouveau venu.
7 Before you inquire, you should not place blame on anyone; and when you have inquired, reprove justly.	7 Ne reprends personne si tu n’es pas d’abord bien informé; commence par examiner le cas et tu feras ensuite des reproches.
8 Before you listen, you should not respond a word; and you should not interrupt in the middle of a discourse.	8 Ne réponds pas avant d’avoir écouté, n’interviens pas au beau milieu du discours.
9 You should not contend in a matter which does not concern you, and you should not sit in judgment together with sinners.	9 Ne te mêle pas de ce qui ne te regarde pas, ne prends pas parti dans les disputes entre pécheurs.
10 Son, you should not be involved in many matters. And if you become rich, you will not be free from transgression. For if you pursue, you will not apprehend; and if you run ahead, you will not escape.	10 Mon enfant, n’entreprends pas trop de choses à la fois; si tu continues d’en rajouter, tu ne seras pas sans reproches; tu auras beau courir, tu n’y arriveras pas, et tu ne pourras pas davantage t’en dégager.
11 There is an impious man who labors and hurries and grieves, but all the more will he be without abundance.	11 Il y en a qui se fatiguent au travail, s’épuisent et se tourmentent, et ils se retrouvent plus pauvres qu’avant.
12 There is a debilitated man in need of recovery, who is lacking in strength and abundant in poverty.	12 D’autres sont faibles et vulnérables, sans ressources et manquant de tout, mais le Seigneur les regarde d’un œil favorable.
13 Yet the eye of God has looked with favor upon him for his benefit, and he has lifted him up from his humiliation, and he has exalted his head. And many have wondered at him, and they have honored God.	13 Il les tire de leur abaissement et leur fait redresser la tête, à tel point que beaucoup s’en étonnent.
14 Good things and misfortune, life and death, poverty and wealth, are from God.	14 Prospérité et malheur, vie et mort, pauvreté et richesse, tout vient du Seigneur.
15 Wisdom, and discipline, and knowledge of the law are with God. Love and the ways of good things are with him.	15 NO TEXT
16 Error and darkness have been created by sinners. And those who exult in evil, grow old in evil.	16 NO TEXT
17 The gift of God remains with the just man, and his advancement will have success unto eternity.	17 Les hommes droits peuvent compter sur la générosité du Seigneur, sa bienveillance les guidera en toute occasion.
18 There is one who is enriched by spending sparingly, and this is the extent of his reward.	18 Pense au sort d’un homme qui s’est enrichi à force de calculs et d’économies.
19 About this, he says: “I have found rest for myself, and now I alone will eat from my goods.”	19 Peut-être se dit-il: “J’ai bien gagné mon repos, je peux vivre maintenant sur ce que j’ai acquis”. Mais il ne sait pas le temps qui lui reste, il mourra bien et laissera tout à d’autres.
20 But he does not know how much time will pass before death approaches, and then he must leave everything behind to others and die.	20 Sois fidèle à ton devoir, consacres-y ta vie et poursuis ton œuvre jusqu’en tes vieux jours.
21 Stand fast in your covenant, and become familiar with it, and grow old in the work of your commandments.	21 Ne te scandalise pas de la réussite des pécheurs; mets ta confiance dans le Seigneur et persévère dans ton labeur. C’est chose facile pour le Seigneur que de faire riche le pauvre en un instant.
22 You should not spend time in the works of sinners. Instead, trust in God and remain in your own place.	22 La bénédiction du Seigneur vient récompenser l’homme droit; soudain, sans se faire annoncer, elle porte ses fruits.
23 For it is easy, in the eyes of God, to make a pauper suddenly rich.	23 Ne dis pas: “De quoi est-ce que je manque, que pourrais-je avoir ou désirer de plus?”
24 The blessing of God hurries to reward the just man, and in a fleeting hour his advancement bears fruit.	24 Ne dis pas: “J’ai tout ce qu’il me faut, quel malheur à présent pourrait m’arriver?”
25 You should not say: “What do I need?” or, “What good will there be for me in this?”	25 Dans les bons jours on oublie les mauvais, dans les mauvais jours on ne se souvient plus des bons.
26 You should not say: “I have enough for myself,” or, “What could be worse than this?”	26 Même quand la fin est proche, il est facile pour le Seigneur de rendre à chacun selon sa conduite.
27 In a day of good things, you should not be forgetful of misfortunes. And in a day of misfortunes, you should not be forgetful of good things.	27 L’heure de l’épreuve fait oublier tous les plaisirs, c’est quand se termine la vie d’un homme que ses actions prennent tout leur sens.
28 For it is easy, in the sight of God, on the day of one’s passing, to repay each one according to his ways.	28 Ne parle pas de vie comblée de bénédictions tant que la personne n’est pas morte: tu ne la connaîtras qu’à la fin.
29 The affliction of an hour causes one to forget great delights, and in the end of a man is the uncovering of his works.	29 N’introduis pas n’importe qui dans ta maison, car les profiteurs adroits sont nombreux.
30 You should not praise any man before death. For a man is known by his children.	30 La pensée de l’orgueilleux est comme la perdrix encagée pour attirer le gibier: il t’observe et cherche tes points faibles;
31 You should not bring every man into your house. For many are the snares of the deceitful.	31 il change le bien en mal, il pose ses pièges, il calomnie ce qu’il y a de meilleur.
32 For as a stomach with a bad smell vomits, and as a partridge is led into a cage, and like a deer led into a snare, so also is the heart of the arrogant. And it is like a bystander watching his neighbor fall.	32 L’étincelle fera flamber les charbons, le pécheur avec ses pièges fera couler le sang.
33 For it lies in ambush, and then turns good into evil, and it will place the blame on the elect.	33 Méfie-toi du méchant car il complote le mal; il pourrait détruire ta réputation pour toujours.
34 From one spark, a great fire grows; and from one deceitful man, much blood flows. But a very sinful man lies in ambush for blood.	34 Introduis un étranger dans ta maison, il te causera des problèmes; il te brouillera avec les gens de ta maison.
35 Pay close attention to yourself before a harmful man, for he fabricates evils. Otherwise, he may lead over you a whispered reproach unceasingly.
36 Receive a stranger to yourself, and he will overthrow you with a whirlwind, and he will alienate you from what is your very own.
