1 O how good and gracious, Lord, is your spirit in all things!	1 et ton Esprit impérissable est en tout!
2 Therefore, those who wander afield, you correct, and, as to those who sin, you counsel them and admonish them, so that, having abandoned malice, they may believe in you, O Lord.	2 C’est ainsi que tu corriges par degrés ceux qui pèchent; tu leur fais voir, grâce à tes réprimandes, en quoi ils ont péché, pour qu’ils renoncent au mal et croient en toi, Seigneur.
3 For those ancient inhabitants of your holy land, who you abhorred,	3 Ce fut le cas pour les anciens habitants de ta Terre sainte:
4 because they were doing works hateful to you, through unjust medicines and sacrifices,	4 tu les avais en horreur à cause de leurs pratiques détestables, leur sorcellerie et leurs rites impies,
5 and the merciless murderers of their own sons, and the eaters of human entrails, and the devourers of blood apart from your community sacrament,	5 le meurtre impitoyable des petits enfants, les festins sanguinaires où ils mangeaient de la chair humaine avec le sang et les entrailles, tandis qu’ils célébraient leurs cultes secrets.
6 and the sellers performing the ceremonies of helpless souls, you willed to destroy by the hands of our parents,	6 Ces parents meurtriers d’êtres sans défense, tu avais décidé de les anéantir par la main de nos pères.
7 so that they might worthily secure the sojourn of the children of God, in the land which is most beloved by you.	7 Tu voulais que cette terre qui t’est chère entre toutes, devienne la patrie d’enfants de Dieu dignes d’elle.
8 Yet, so that you were lenient even to these men, you sent wasps, forerunners of your army, so that you might destroy them little by little,	8 Pourtant, même envers ces anciens habitants, tu as fait preuve de modération, parce que c’étaient des êtres humains. C’est ainsi qu’en avant-garde de ton armée tu as envoyé sur eux des frelons, pour les détruire peu à peu.
9 not because you were unable to subdue the impious under the just by war or by cruel beasts, or with a harsh word to exterminate them at once,	9 Tu aurais pu, bien sûr, faire écraser les impies par les justes au cours d’une bataille, ou les anéantir d’un seul coup par des bêtes terrifiantes ou par un mot venu de toi.
10 but, in judging by degrees, you were giving them a place of repentance, not unaware that their nation is wicked, and their malice is inherent, and that their thinking could never be changed.	10 Mais en les punissant progressivement, tu leur laissais l’occasion de se repentir. Tu n’ignorais pourtant pas que leur fond était mauvais et leur méchanceté innée, et qu’ils ne changeraient jamais,
11 For this offspring was accursed from the beginning. Neither did you, fearing anyone, give favor to their sins.	11 car leur race avait été maudite dès le commencement. En tous cas, ce n’est pas par peur de qui que ce soit que tu laissais leurs crimes impunis.
12 For who will say to you, “What have you done?” Or who will stand against your judgment? Or who will come before you as a defender of unfair men? Or who will accuse you, if the nations perish, which you have made?	12 Car, qui pourrait te dire: “Qu’as-tu fait?”; qui pourrait s’opposer à tes décisions? Qui te fera des reproches si tu anéantis des nations que tu as créées? Qui t’empêchera de punir des hommes injustes?
13 For neither is there any other God but you, who has care of all, to whom you would show that you did not give judgment unjustly.	13 En dehors de toi qui prends soin de tous, il n’y a pas d’autre Dieu auquel tu devrais prouver que tu n’agis pas injustement.
14 Neither will king or tyrant inquire before you about those whom you destroyed.	14 Il n’y a pas davantage de roi ou de souverain qui puisse s’opposer à toi quand tu as décidé de punir.
15 Therefore, since you are just, you order all things justly, considering it foreign to your virtue to condemn him who does not deserve to be punished.	15 Parce que tu es parfaitement juste, tu conduis tout avec justice: tu ferais un mauvais usage de ton pouvoir si tu condamnais celui qui ne mérite pas d’être puni.
16 For your power is the beginning of justice, and, because you are Lord of all, you make yourself to be lenient to all.	16 Ta force est le fondement de ta justice; étant le maître de toutes choses, tu peux aussi les épargner.
17 For you reveal power to those who do not believe you to be perfect in power, and you expose the arrogance of those who do not know you.	17 Ceux qui mettent en doute ta puissance absolue, tu leur montres ta force; tu punis l’audace de ceux qui la bravent.
18 Yet, you are the master of power, since you judge with tranquility, and since you administer us with great reverence; for it is close to you to be used whenever you will.	18 Mais bien que tu sois un puissant Seigneur, tu juges avec modération et tu nous gouvernes avec beaucoup de patience, car tu es libre d’intervenir quand il te plaît.
19 But you have taught your people, through such works, that they must be just and humane, and you have made your sons to be of good hope, because in judging you provide a place for repentance from sins.	19 En agissant ainsi tu as montré à ton peuple que le juste doit aimer tous les hommes, et tu as donné à tes fils cette douce espérance qu’après le péché tu leur permettras de se repentir.
20 For even if the enemies of your servants were deserving of death, you afflicted them with great attentiveness, providing a time and a place whereby they would be able to be changed from malice;	20 Envers les Cananéens eux-mêmes, pourtant ennemis de tes enfants et bien dignes de mort, tu as agi avec retenue et indulgence, pour leur donner le temps et l’occasion de se convertir.
21 with what diligence, then, have you judged your sons, whose parents you have given oaths and covenants in good faith!	21 Mais envers tes fils tu as agi avec encore beaucoup plus de précautions, puisque tu t’étais lié avec leurs ancêtres par des serments, des alliances et tant de belles promesses.
22 Therefore, while you give us discipline, you give our enemies a multiplicity of scourges, so that in judging we may think on your goodness, and when we are judged, we may hope for mercy.	22 Ainsi donc, lorsque tu frappes nos ennemis avec modération, c’est pour notre instruction, pour que nous songions à ta bonté lorsque nous aurons nous-mêmes à juger, et que nous comptions sur ta miséricorde lorsque nous sommes jugés.
23 Therefore, also to these, who have lived their lived their life irrationally and unjustly, through these things that they worshiped, you gave the greatest torments.	23 Ceux qui vivaient follement dans le mal, tu les as punis par le moyen de leurs idoles abominables.
24 And, indeed, they wandered for a long time in the way of error, valuing those things as gods, which are worthless even among animals, living in foolish irrational behavior.	24 Ils s’étaient vraiment égarés trop loin sur les chemins de l’erreur, en prenant pour dieux les plus laids et les plus méprisables parmi les animaux! Ils s’étaient laissé berner comme des enfants sans raison.
25 Because of this, you have given a judgment in derision, as if from foolish children.	25 Comme pour des enfants qui ne pensent pas, tu leur avais d’abord envoyé un avertissement léger,
26 But those who have not been corrected by mockery and chiding, have experienced a judgment worthy of God.	26 mais ils n’avaient pas compris ces remontrances bénignes, si bien qu’ils méritèrent de faire l’expérience du jugement de Dieu.
27 For among those who were indignant at their sufferings, which came through those things that they reputed to be gods, when they saw that they would be destroyed by these same things, those who formerly refused knowledge of him, now acknowledged the true God, and, because of this, the end of their condemnation came upon them.	27 Dans leurs souffrances ils s’indignaient contre ces animaux qu’ils avaient pris pour des dieux et qui maintenant devenaient les instruments de leur châtiment. C’est alors qu’ils découvrirent et reconnurent comme Dieu celui qu’autrefois ils avaient refusé de voir: c’était là la raison du châtiment suprême qui tombait sur eux.
