1 And Job, responding, said:	1 Giobbe rispose, dicendo:
2 Truly, I know that it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with God.	2 « Lo so bene che l'è così, e anche che l'uomo, messo a confronto con Dio, non può aver ragione.
3 If he chooses to contend with him, he is not able to respond to him once out of a thousand times.	3 Se volesse contendere con lui, non potrebbe rispondergli una volta su mille.
4 He is understanding in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and yet had peace?	4 Egli è saggio di cuore, è ricco di potenza, e chi ebbe pace dopo avergli resistito?
5 He has moved mountains, and those whom he overthrew in his fury did not know it.	5 Egli trasporta le montagne, nel suo furore le rovescia, senza che se ne avvedano;
6 He shakes the earth out of its place and its pillars tremble.	6 Scuote la terra dal suo posto, e ne tremano le colonne.
7 He commands the sun and it does not rise, and he closes the stars as if under a seal.	7 Comanda al sole ed ei non sorge, e chiude le stelle come sotto sigillo.
8 He alone extends the heavens, and he walks upon the waves of the sea.	8 Egli solo stende i cieli, e cammina sui flutti del mare.
9 He fashions Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the interior of the south.	9 Ha creato l'Orsa, Orione, le Pleiadi e i recessi del cielo australe.
10 He accomplishes great and incomprehensible and miraculous things, which cannot be numbered.	10 Fa cose grandi e in comprensibili, e maraviglie senza numero.
11 If he approaches me, I will not see him; if he departs, I will not understand.	11 Se mi vien vicino, non lo vedo; se parte, non me ne accorgo.
12 If he suddenly should question, who will answer him? Or who can say, “Why did you do so?”	12 Se all'improvviso interroga, chi gli potrà rispondere? Chi può dirgli: Perchè fai così?
13 God, whose wrath no one is able to resist, and under whom they bend who carry the world,	13 Dio! Nessuno può resistere alla sua ira; sotto di lui si curvano quelli che portano il mondo.
14 what am I then, that I should answer him and exchange words with him?	14 E chi son io, da rispondergli? Con quali mie parole potrei discutere con lui?
15 And if I now have any justice, I will not respond, but will beseech my judge.	15 Anche se avessi qualche ragione, non oserei replicare; ma implorerei la clemenza del mio giudice.
16 And if he should listen to me when I call, I would not believe that he had heard my voice.	16 Ed anche se esaudisse le mie suppliche, non crederei che Egli abbia avuto riguardo alla mia voce.
17 For he will crush me in a whirlwind and multiply my wounds, even without cause.	17 Chè Egli mi potrebbe schiacciare in un turbine, e moltiplicare le mie piaghe anche senza ragione.
18 He does not permit my spirit to rest, and he fills me with bitterness.	18 Non lascerebbe riposare il mio spirito, mi sazierebbe di amarezze.
19 If strength is sought, he is most strong; if equity in judgment, no one would dare to give testimony for me.	19 Se si ricorre alla forza, Egli è potentissimo; se alla giustizia, nessuno ardirà testimoniare in mio favore.
20 If I wanted to justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me; if I would reveal my innocence, he would prove me depraved.	20 Se vorrò giustificarmi, la mia stessa bocca mi condannerà; se dimostrerò d essere innocente, Egli mi proverebbe reo.
21 And if I now became simple, my soul would be ignorant even of this, and my life would weary me.	21 Anche se fossi giusto, non lo saprebbe l'anima mia, e mi sarà di tedio la vita.
22 There is one thing that I have said: both the innocent and the impious he consumes.	22 Questo solo io dico: Egli fa perire l'innocente e il reo.
23 If he scourges, let him kill all at once, and not laugh at the punishment of the innocent.	23 Or se Egli flagella, uccida subito, e non rida delle pene degli innocenti.
24 Since the earth has been given into the hand of the impious, he covers the face of its judges; for if it is not him, then who is it?	24 La terra è in mano dell'empio. Egli mette una benda agli occhi dei suoi giudici. E chi è se non lui?
25 My days have been swifter than a messenger; they have fled and have not seen goodness.	25 I miei giorni passarono più veloci d'un corriere, son fuggiti senza vedere la felicità;
26 They have passed by like ships carrying fruits, just like an eagle flying to food.	26 Son passati come navi che portan frutta, come aquila che piomba sulla preda.
27 If I say: “By no means will I speak this way.” I change my face and I am tortured with sorrow.	27 Anche se dico: Non parlerò più così, si altera la mia faccia tra gli strazi del dolore,
28 I have dreaded all my works, knowing that you did not spare the offender.	28 Torno a temere per ogni mia azione, sapendo che non la risparmi al peccatore.
29 Yet, if I am also just as impious, why have I labored in vain?	29 E se anche così son reo, a che affaticarmi invano?
30 If I had been washed with snow-like waters, and my hands were shining like the cleanest thing,	30 Quand'anche mi lavassi con acqua di neve e splendessero per la gran mondezza le mie mani,
31 yet you would plunge me in filth, and my own garments would abhor me.	31 tu mi tingeresti di sozzura e le mie vesti m'avrebbero in orrore.
32 For even I would not answer a man who were like myself, nor one who could be heard with me equally in judgment.	32 Infatti non avrò da rispondere a un uomo come me che possa con me e al par di me andar al giudizio:
33 There is no one who could both prevail in argument and in placing his hand between the two.	33 non c'è chi possa riprendere l'uno e l'altro e metter la sua mano su tutti e due.
34 Let him take his staff away from me, and let not the fear of him terrify me.	34 Ritiri Egli da me la sua verga, cessi di spaventarmi il suo terrore,
35 I will speak and I will not fear him, for in fearfulness I am not able to respond.	35 e allora gli parlerò senza averne paura; ma col timore non posso rispondere ».
