CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
Then Zophar the Naamathite answered by saying:1 υπολαβων δε σωφαρ ο μιναιος λεγει
In response, various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind moves quickly through different ideas.2 ουχ ουτως υπελαμβανον αντερειν σε ταυτα και ουχι συνιετε μαλλον η και εγω
The teaching you use to admonish me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding will respond for me.3 παιδειαν εντροπης μου ακουσομαι και πνευμα εκ της συνεσεως αποκρινεται μοι
This, I know, is from the beginning, from the time that man was set over the earth:4 μη ταυτα εγνως απο του ετι αφ' ου ετεθη ανθρωπος επι της γης
that the praise of the impious shall be short, and the joy of the hypocrite lasts only a moment.5 ευφροσυνη γαρ ασεβων πτωμα εξαισιον χαρμονη δε παρανομων απωλεια
If his pride ascends even towards the heavens, and his head touches the clouds,6 εαν αναβη εις ουρανον αυτου τα δωρα η δε θυσια αυτου νεφων αψηται
in the end, he will be destroyed like a trash heap, and those who had seen him will say: “Where is he?”7 οταν γαρ δοκη ηδη κατεστηριχθαι τοτε εις τελος απολειται οι δε ιδοντες αυτον ερουσιν που εστιν
Like a dream that flies away, he will not be found; he will pass away like a nightmare.8 ωσπερ ενυπνιον εκπετασθεν ου μη ευρεθη επτη δε ωσπερ φασμα νυκτερινον
The eyes that had seen him, will not see him; no longer will his own place admire him.9 οφθαλμος παρεβλεψεν και ου προσθησει και ουκετι προσνοησει αυτον ο τοπος αυτου
His sons will be worn away by poverty, and his own hands will deliver his grief to him.10 τους υιους αυτου ολεσαισαν ηττονες αι δε χειρες αυτου πυρσευσαισαν οδυνας
His bones will be filled with the vices of his youth, and they will sleep with him in the dust.11 οστα αυτου ενεπλησθησαν νεοτητος αυτου και μετ' αυτου επι χωματος κοιμηθησεται
For, when evil will be sweet in his mouth, he will hide it under his tongue.12 εαν γλυκανθη εν στοματι αυτου κακια κρυψει αυτην υπο την γλωσσαν αυτου
He will permit it, and not abandon it, and he will conceal it in his throat.13 ου φεισεται αυτης και ουκ εγκαταλειψει αυτην και συνεξει αυτην εν μεσω του λαρυγγος αυτου
His bread in his belly will be turned into the venom of snakes within him.14 και ου μη δυνηθη βοηθησαι εαυτω χολη ασπιδος εν γαστρι αυτου
The riches that he devours, he will vomit up, and from his stomach God will draw them out.15 πλουτος αδικως συναγομενος εξεμεσθησεται εξ οικιας αυτου εξελκυσει αυτον αγγελος
He will suck the head of snakes, and the tongue of the viper will kill him.16 θυμον δε δρακοντων θηλασειεν ανελοι δε αυτον γλωσσα οφεως
(May he never see the streams of the river, the torrents of honey and butter.)17 μη ιδοι αμελξιν νομαδων μηδε νομας μελιτος και βουτυρου
He will be repaid for all he has done, yet he will not be consumed; according to the multitude of his schemes, so also will he suffer.18 εις κενα και ματαια εκοπιασεν πλουτον εξ ου ου γευσεται ωσπερ στριφνος αμασητος ακαταποτος
For, having broken in, he stripped the poor. He has quickly stolen away a house he did not build.19 πολλων γαρ αδυνατων οικους εθλασεν διαιταν δε ηρπασεν και ουκ εστησεν
And yet his stomach will not be satisfied, and when he has the things he desires, he will not be able to possess them.20 ουκ εστιν αυτου σωτηρια τοις υπαρχουσιν εν επιθυμια αυτου ου σωθησεται
Nothing remained of his portion, and, because of this, nothing will continue of his kind.21 ουκ εστιν υπολειμμα τοις βρωμασιν αυτου δια τουτο ουκ ανθησει αυτου τα αγαθα
When he will be satisfied, he will be constrained; he will seethe, and all anguish will fall upon him.22 οταν δε δοκη ηδη πεπληρωσθαι θλιβησεται πασα δε αναγκη επ' αυτον επελευσεται
May his stomach be filled, so that God may send forth the fury of his wrath to him and may rain down his battle upon him.23 ει πως πληρωσαι γαστερα αυτου επαποστειλαι επ' αυτον θυμον οργης νιψαι επ' αυτον οδυνας
He will flee from weapons of iron, and he will fall in an arc of brass,24 και ου μη σωθη εκ χειρος σιδηρου τρωσαι αυτον τοξον χαλκειον
which had been drawn and had issued forth from its sheath, glittering in its bitterness: the horrible ones will go forth and approach over him.25 διεξελθοι δε δια σωματος αυτου βελος αστραπαι δε εν διαιταις αυτου περιπατησαισαν επ' αυτω φοβοι
All darkness has been hidden in his secrecy. A fire that has not been set will devour him; he will be thrown down and forsaken in his tabernacle.26 παν δε σκοτος αυτω υπομειναι κατεδεται αυτον πυρ ακαυστον κακωσαι δε αυτου επηλυτος τον οικον
The heavens will reveal his sinfulness, and the earth will rise up against him.27 ανακαλυψαι δε αυτου ο ουρανος τας ανομιας γη δε επανασταιη αυτω
The offspring of his house will be exposed; he will be pulled down in the day of God’s wrath.28 ελκυσαι τον οικον αυτου απωλεια εις τελος ημερα οργης επελθοι αυτω
This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the inheritance of his words from the Lord.29 αυτη η μερις ανθρωπου ασεβους παρα κυριου και κτημα υπαρχοντων αυτω παρα του επισκοπου
