1 And this was the text of the letter: “Artaxerxes, the great king from India all the way to Ethiopia, to the leaders and generals of the one hundred twenty-seven provinces, which are subject to his authority, greetings.	1 Quella notte il re, non potendo chiudere un occhio, si fece portar le storie e gli annali dei tempi trascorsi. Mentre questi venivan letti alla sua presenza,
2 Although I have reigned over many nations and subjugated the whole world under my realm, I was by no means willing to abuse the greatness of this power, but to govern my subjects with clemency and leniency, so that they would settle into a quiet life, apart from any terror, and delight in peace, as all mortals would choose to do.	2 si arrivò al luogo dove stava scritto come Mardocheo avesse rivelato al re la congiura degli eunuchi Bagatan e Zares, che volevano uccidere il re Assuero.

4 explained to me that there was a people, scattered throughout the whole world, that used strange laws, and, acting against the customs of all peoples, despised the commandments of kings and violated the harmony of all nations with their dissension.	4 E il re disse subito: « Chi c'è nell'atrio? » Proprio allora Aman era entrato nell'atrio interiore della casa reale per suggerire al re di fare appiccare Mardocheo al patibolo che gli era stato preparato.
5 When we had learned this, seeing one nation rebellious against all mankind, having overthrown the usefulness of laws, and going against our orders, and disturbing the peace and harmony of the provinces subject to us,	5 I servi risposero: « Aman è nell'atrio ». Il re disse: « Entri ».
6 we commanded that whomever Haman, who is chief over all the provinces, and second after the king, and whom we honor in the place of a father, whomever he would point out should be destroyed by their enemies, with their wives and children, and that no one may take pity on them, on the fourteenth day of the twelfth month Adar of this present year,	6 Appena fu entrato, gli disse: « Che deve farsi ad un uomo che il re brama onorare? » Aman pensò dentro di sè, e credendo che il re non volesse onorare altro che lui,
7 so that these guilty men, all on one day, may go down to the underworld, restoring to our empire the peace that they had disturbed.”	7 rispose: « L'uomo che il re brama onorare,
8 And the effect of the letters was this: that all provinces would know and prepare for the prescribed day.	8 deve esser vestito degli abiti reali, e fatto salire sopra uno dei cavalli cavalcati dal re, deve ricevere un diadema reale sulla sua testa,
9 The couriers, who had been sent, hurried to complete the king’s command, but the edict was hung up in Susa immediately. And the king and Haman celebrated a feast, while all the Jews in the city were weeping.	9 e il primo dei principi reali e dei grandi della corte ne tenga il cavallo, e, girando per la piazza della città, gridi e dica: Così sarà onorato colui che il re vuole onorare ».
	10 Il re gli disse: « Allora sbrigati, prendi il manto e il cavallo, e fa' quanto hai detto al giudeo Mardocheo, che siede dinanzi alla porta del palazzo; bada bene di non ometter nulla di quello che hai detto ».
	11 E Aman, preso il manto e il cavallo, rivestì Mardocheo sulla piazza della città, e fattolo salire sul cavallo, gli andava innanzi e gridava: « E' degno di questo onore colui che il re vuole onorare ».
	12 Tornato che fu Mardocheo alla porta del palazzo, Aman s'affrettò d'andare a casa sua, triste e col capo coperto,
	13 e narrò alla sua moglie Zares e agli amici quanto gli era accaduto. Gli dissero i savi da cui prendeva consiglio e la moglie: « Se Mardocheo, davanti a cui hai cominciato a cadere, è della razza dei Giudei, tu non potrai resistergli, ma cadrai davanti a lui ».
	14 Essi parlavano ancora, quando vennero gli eunuchi del re e lo forzarono ad andare subito al convito preparato dalla regina.
