CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
But when they had ceased speaking, it happened that Holofernes, being very indignant, said to Achior:1 Cuando se apaciguó el tumulto de los que rodeaban al Consejo, Holofernes, general en jefe de las fuerzas asirias, increpó a Ajior en presencia de la multitud de extranjeros y de todos los moabitas, diciéndole:
“Because you have prophesied to us, saying that the people of Israel may be defended by their God, and so as to reveal to you that there is no God, except Nebuchadnezzar:2 «¿Quién eres tú, Ajior, y ustedes, vendidos a Efraím, para que vengan a profetizar entre nosotros como lo has hecho hoy? ¿Por qué quieres disuadirnos de hacer la guerra a la estirpe de Israel, pretextando que su Dios los protege? ¿Acaso hay otro dios fuera de Nabucodonosor? El enviará su fuerza y los exterminará de la superficie de la tierra sin que su Dios pueda librarlos.
when we will have struck them all as one man, then you also will pass away with them by the sword of the Assyrians, and all Israel will perish into perdition with you.3 Nosotros, sus servidores, los aplastaremos como a un solo hombre, y no podrán resistir el empuje de nuestra caballería.
And you will be shown that Nebuchadnezzar is the lord of the whole earth. And then, the sword of my army will pass through your sides, and, being stabbed, you will fall among the wounded of Israel, and you will breathe no longer, when you have been destroyed with them.4 Los pasaremos a sangre y fuego; sus montañas quedarán empapadas con su sangre y sus llanuras se llenarán con sus cadáveres.
And furthermore, if you consider your prophecy to be true, do not let your countenance fall, and let the paleness that has taken hold of your face depart from you, if you claim that these my words cannot be fulfilled.5 Y tú, Ajior, mercenario amonita, que has pronunciado estas palabras en un momento de desvarío, no verás más mi rostro hasta que me haya vengado de esa raza escapada de Egipto.
But so that you may know that you will experience these things together with them, behold, from this hour you will be associated with their people, so that, when they receive the punishment that they deserve from my sword, you will fall under the same vengeance.”6 Entonces serás atravesado por la espada de mi ejército y por la lanza de mis guerreros, y caerás entre sus heridos cuando yo vuelva del combate.
Then Holofernes instructed his servants to apprehend Achior, and to lead him through to Bethulia, and to deliver him into the hands of the sons of Israel.7 Mis servidores te llevarán a la montaña y te dejarán en una de las ciudades de los desfiladeros,
And, taking him, the servants of Holofernes traveled through the plains. But when they approached close to the mountains, the slingers of stones went forth against them.8 porque no morirás hasta que seas exterminado con esa gente.
Then, diverting by the side of the mountain, they tied Achior, hands and feet, to a tree, and so they abandoned him, bound with ropes, and they returned to their lord.9 Y si abrigas la secreta esperanza de que no serán capturados, ¡no agaches la cabeza!
Thereafter, the sons of Israel, descending from Bethulia, came to him. Releasing him, they brought him to Bethulia. And so, standing him in the midst of the people, they interrogated him as to what event caused the Assyrians to abandon him, bound.10 Luego Holofernes ordenó a los servidores que estaban en su tienda de campaña que tomaran a Ajior, lo llevaran a Betulia y lo entregaran a los israelitas.
In those days, the rulers of that place were Uzziah, the son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris, also called Gothoniel.11 Ellos lo condujeron a la llanura, fuera del campamento, y después de atravesar la llanura en dirección a la montaña, llegaron junto a las fuentes que están debajo de Betulia.
And so, in the midst of the elders and in the sight of everyone, Achior explained all that he had said in reply to the questioning of Holofernes, and in what manner the people of Holofernes wanted to have him killed because of this word,12 Apenas los divisaron los hombres de la ciudad que estaban en la cumbre de la montaña empuñaron sus armas y salieron fuera de la ciudad, mientras los honderos arrojaban piedras para impedirles el acceso.
and how Holofernes himself, being angry, had ordered him to be handed over to the Israelites, for this reason: so that when he would prevail over the sons of Israel, then he would also command Achior himself to be executed by diverse torments, because he had said that the God of heaven is their defender.13 Ellos, deslizándose por la ladera de la montaña, ataron a Ajior y lo dejaron tendido al pie de la misma. Luego volvieron a presentarse ante su señor.
And when Achior had declared all these things, all the people fell on their faces, adoring the Lord, and, communing together with mourning and weeping, they poured out their prayers with one mind to the Lord,14 En seguida los israelitas bajaron de su ciudad, se acercaron a él y lo desataron.
saying: “O Lord, God of heaven and earth, behold their arrogance, and gaze upon our humility, and attend to the face of your holy ones, and reveal that you do not abandon those who rely on you, and that those who rely on themselves and who glory in their own strength, you humble.”15 que en aquellos días eran Ozías, hijo de Miqueas, de la tribu de Simeón, Cabris, hijo de Gotoniel, y Carmis, hijo de Melquiel.
And so, when their weeping was ended, and the prayer of the people throughout the entire day was completed, they consoled Achior,16 Ellos convocaron a todos los ancianos de la ciudad, y también concurrieron a la asamblea los jóvenes y las mujeres.
saying: “The God of our fathers, whose power you have predicted, will give to you this in return: that you, instead, will see the destruction of them.17 El les refirió las deliberaciones del Consejo de Holofernes, lo que él mismo había dicho ante los jefes asirios, y las orgullosas amenazas de Holofernes contra el pueblo de Israel.
Truly, when the Lord our God will give this freedom to his servants, may God also be with you in our midst, so that, just as it pleases you, everyone who is with you may keep company with us.”18 Todo el pueblo, postrándose, adoró a Dios y Exclamó:
Then Uzziah, after the council was ended, received him into his own house, and he made him a great supper.19 ¡Señor, Dios del cielo!, mira su arrogancia y compadécete de la humillación de nuestra raza: vuelve en este día tu mirada a los que te están consagrados».
And all the elders were invited; together they refreshed themselves at the completion of their fast.20 Luego tranquilizaron a Ajior y lo felicitaron efusivamente.
In truth, after this, all the people were called together, and they prayed throughout the entire night within the assembly, petitioning help from the God of Israel.21 Al terminar la asamblea, Ozías lo llevó a su casa y ofreció un banquete a los ancianos.
