Now Josiah kept the Passover to the Lord in Jerusalem, and it was immolated on the fourteenth day of the first month.1 Josías celebró una Pascua en honor de Yahveh en Jerusalén; inmolaron la Pascua el día catorce del primer mes.
And he appointed the priests in their offices, and he exhorted them to minister in the house of the Lord.2 Restableció a los sacerdotes en sus ministerios y los animó al servicio de la Casa de Yahveh.
Also, he spoke with the Levites, by whose instruction all of Israel was sanctified to the Lord, saying: “Place the ark in the sanctuary of the temple, which Solomon, the son of David, the king of Israel, built. For never again shall you carry it. Instead, now you shall minister to the Lord your God, and to his people Israel.3 Dijo a los levitas que tenían inteligencia para todo Israel y estaban consagrados a Yahveh: «Colocad el arca santa en la Casa que edificó Salomón, hijo de David, rey de Israel, porque ya no habréis de llevarla a hombros; servid ahora a Yahveh vuestro Dios y a Israel, su pueblo.
And prepare yourselves by your houses and families, within each division, just as David, the king of Israel, instructed, and just as his son Solomon has written.4 Estad preparados según vuestras casas paternas y vuestras clases, conforme a lo escrito por David, rey de Israel, y lo escrito por su hijo Salomón.
And minister in the sanctuary, by the Levitical families and companies.5 Ocupad vuestros sitios en el santuario según los grupos de casas paternas a disposición de vuestros hermanos, los hijos del pueblo; los levitas tendrán parte en la familia paterna.
And having been sanctified, immolate the Passover. And then prepare your brothers, so that they may be able to act in accord with the words which the Lord has spoken by the hand of Moses.”6 E inmolad la Pascua, santificaos y preparadla para vuestros hermanos, cumpliendo la orden de Yahveh, dada por medio de Moisés.
After this, Josiah gave to all the people, those who had been found there at the solemnity of the Passover, thirty thousand lambs and young goats from the flocks, and other kinds of small cattle, and also three thousand oxen. All these were from the substance of the king.7 Josías reservó para la gente del pueblo ganado menor, así corderos como cabritos, en número de 30.000, todos ellos como víctimas pascuales para cuantos se hallaban presentes, y 3.000 bueyes. Todo ello de la hacienda del rey.
Also, his rulers offered what they had vowed freely, as much for the people as for the priests and Levites. Moreover, Hilkiah, and Zechariah, and Jehiel, rulers of the house of the Lord, gave to the priests, in order to observe the Passover, two thousand six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.8 También sus jefes reservaron ofrendas voluntarias para el pueblo, los sacerdotes y los levitas.
And Conaniah, with Shemaiah and Nethanel, his brothers, indeed also Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, rulers of the Levites, gave to the rest of the Levites, in order to celebrate the Passover, five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen.9 Konanías, Semaías y Natanael, su hermano, y Jasabías, Yeiel y Yozabad, jefes de los levitas, reservaron para los levitas 5.000 corderos pascuales y quinientos bueyes.
And the ministry was prepared. And the priests stood in their office, and the Levites also stood in their companies, according to the order of the king.10 Preparado así el servicio, ocuparon los sacerdotes sus puestos, lo mismo que los levitas, según sus clases, conforme al mandato del rey.
And the Passover was immolated. And the priests sprinkled the blood with their hand, and the Levites drew away the pelts of the holocausts.11 Se inmolaron las víctimas pascuales, y mientras los sacerdotes rociaban con la sangre que recibían de mano de los levitas, los levitas las desollaban
And they put these aside, so that they might give them to each one, by their houses and families, and so that they might be offered to the Lord, just as it was written in the book of Moses. And with the oxen, they acted similarly.12 y apartaban lo destinado al holocausto para darlo a las secciones de las casas paternas de los hijos del pueblo, a fin de que lo ofreciesen a Yahveh conforme a lo escrito en el libro de Moisés. Lo mismo se hizo con los bueyes.
And they roasted the Passover above fire, in accord with what was written in the law. Yet truly, the victims of peace offerings they boiled in cauldrons and kettles and pots. And they promptly distributed these to all the common people.13 Asaron la Pascua al fuego, según el ritual; cocieron las cosas sagradas en ollas, calderos y cazuelas, y las repartieron con presteza entre todos los hijos del pueblo.
Then afterward, they made preparations for themselves and for the priests. Indeed, the priests had been occupied in the oblations of the holocausts and the fat offerings, even until night.
Now the singers, the sons of Asaph, were standing in their order, according to the instruction of David, and of Asaph and Heman and Jeduthun, the prophets of the king. Truly, the porters kept watch at each gate, so as not to depart from their ministry even for one moment.
And so, the entire worship ritual of the Lord was completed on that day, so that they observed the Passover and offered holocausts upon the altar of the Lord, in accord with the precept of king Josiah.16 De esta manera se organizó aquel día todo el servicio de Yahveh para celebrar la Pascua y ofrecer los holocaustos sobre el altar de Yahveh, según la orden del rey Josías.
And the sons of Israel, who had been found there, kept the Passover at that time, with the solemnity of unleavened bread, for seven days.17 Los israelitas que se hallaban allí celebraron en ese tiempo la Pascua y la fiesta de los Azimos durante siete días.
There was no Passover similar to this one in Israel, from the days of Samuel the prophet. And neither did anyone, out of all the kings of Israel, keep such a Passover as did Josiah, the priests and Levites, and all those of Judah and Israel who had been found, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.18 No se había celebrado Pascua como ésta en Israel desde los días de Samuel, profeta; y ningún rey de Israel celebró una Pascua como la que celebraron Josías, los sacerdotes y los levitas, todo Judá e Israel, que allí se hallaban presentes, y los habitantes de Jerusalén.
In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah, this Passover was celebrated.19 Esta Pascua se celebró el año dieciocho del reinado de Josías.
After Josiah had repaired the temple, Neco, the king of Egypt, ascended to fight at Carchemish, beside the Euphrates. And Josiah went out to meet him.20 Después de todo lo que hizo para reparar el Templo, subió Nekó, rey de Egipto, para combatir en Karkemis, junto al Eufrates; y Josías le salió al encuentro.
But he sent messengers to him, saying: “What is there between me and you, O king of Judah? I have not come against you today. Instead, I am fighting against another house, to which God instructed me to go promptly. Refrain from acting against God, who is with me, otherwise he may kill you.”21 Nekó le envió mensajeros para decirle: «¿Qué tengo yo que ver contigo, rey de Judá?
Josiah was not willing to return. Instead, he prepared for war against him. Neither would he agree to the words of Neco from the mouth of God. In truth, he traveled so that he might do battle in the field of Megiddo.22 Pero Josías no se apartó de él, pues estaba decidido a darle batalla, sin escuchar las palabras de Nekó, que venían de boca de Dios.
And there, having been wounded by archers, he said to his servants: “Lead me away from the battle. For I have been severely wounded.”23 Los arqueros tiraron contra el rey Josías, y dijo el rey a sus siervos: «Llevadme fuera, pues estoy gravemente herido».
And they took him from the chariot, into another chariot which was following him, as was the custom of kings. And they transported him to Jerusalem. And he died, and he was buried in the mausoleum of his fathers. And all of Judah and Jerusalem mourned for him,24 Sus siervos le sacaron del carro, y pasándole a otro carro que tenía, le llevaron a Jerusalén, donde murió.
most of all Jeremiah. All the singing men and women repeat his lamentations over Josiah, even to the present day. And this has become like a law in Israel. Behold, it is found written in the Lamentations.25 Jeremías compuso una elegía sobre Josías, y todos los cantores y cantoras hablan todavía hoy de Josías en sus elegías; lo cual se ha hecho costumbre en Israel. Están escritas entre las Lamentaciones.
Now the rest of the words of Josiah, and his mercies, which were instructed by the law of the Lord,26 El resto de los hechos de Josías, sus obras piadosas conforme a lo escrito en la Ley de Yahveh,
and also his works, the first and the last, have been written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.27 y sus obras primeras y postreras, están escritas en el libro de los reyes de Israel y de Judá.
