CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
Then it happened that, in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, he and his entire army, arrived against Jerusalem. And they encircled it, and they constructed fortifications all around it.1 Και εν τω ενατω ετει της βασιλειας αυτου, τον δεκατον μηνα, την δεκατην του μηνος, ηλθε Ναβουχοδονοσορ ο βασιλευς της Βαβυλωνος, αυτος και παν το στρατευμα αυτου, κατα της Ιερουσαλημ, και εστρατοπεδευσεν εναντιον αυτης? και ωκοδομησαν περιτειχισματα εναντιον αυτης κυκλω.
And the city was enclosed and besieged, even until the eleventh year of king Zedekiah,2 Και η πολις επολιορκειτο μεχρι του ενδεκατου ετους του βασιλεως Σεδεκιου.
on the ninth day of the month. And a famine prevailed in the city; neither was there bread for the people of the land.3 Και την ενατην του τεταρτου μηνος η πεινα υπερισχυσεν εν τη πολει, και δεν ητο αρτος δια τον λαον του τοπου.
And the city was breached. And all the men of war fled in the night along the way of the gate which is between the double wall at the garden of the king. Now the Chaldeans were besieging the city on all sides. And so Zedekiah fled along the way which leads to the plains of the wilderness.4 Και εξεπορθηθη η πολις, και παντες οι ανδρες του πολεμου εφυγον την νυκτα, δια της οδου της πυλης της μεταξυ των δυο τειχων, της πλησιον του βασιλικου κηπου? οι δε Χαλδαιοι ησαν πλησιον της πολεως κυκλω? και ο βασιλευς υπηγε κατα την οδον της πεδιαδος.
And the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king, and they overtook him in the plains of Jericho. And all the warriors who were with him were dispersed, and they abandoned him.5 Το δε στρατευμα των Χαλδαιων κατεδιωξεν οπισω του βασιλεως, και εφθασαν αυτον εις τας πεδιαδας της Ιεριχω? και παν το στρατευμα αυτου διεσκορπισθη απο πλησιον αυτου.
Therefore, having apprehended him, they led the king to the king of Babylon at Riblah. And he was speaking with him in judgment.6 Και συνελαβον τον βασιλεα και ανηγαγον αυτον προς τον βασιλεα της Βαβυλωνος εις Ριβλα? και επροφεραν καταδικην επ' αυτον.
Then he killed the sons of Zedekiah before him, and he dug out his eyes, and he bound him with chains, and he led him away to Babylon.7 Και εσφαξαν τους υιους του Σεδεκιου εμπροσθεν των οφθαλμων αυτου, και εξετυφλωσαν τους οφθαλμους του Σεδεκιου, και δεσαντες αυτον με δυο χαλκινας αλυσεις, εφεραν αυτον εις Βαβυλωνα.
In the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, the same is the nineteenth year of the king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan, the leader of the army, a servant of the king of Babylon, went into Jerusalem.8 Εν δε τω πεμπτω μηνι, την εβδομην του μηνος, του δεκατου ενατου ετους του Ναβουχοδονοσορ, βασιλεως της Βαβυλωνος, ηλθεν επι Ιερουσαλημ Νεβουζαραδαν ο αρχισωματοφυλαξ, ο δουλος του βασιλεως της Βαβυλωνος?
And he set fire to the house of the Lord, and to the house of the king. And the houses of Jerusalem, and every great house, he burned with fire.9 και κατεκαυσε τον οικον του Κυριου και τον οικον του βασιλεως και παντας τους οικους της Ιερουσαλημ, και παντα μεγαν οικον κατεκαυσεν εν πυρι.
And the entire army of the Chaldeans, which was with the leader of the military, tore down the walls of Jerusalem all around.10 Και παν το στρατευμα των Χαλδαιων, το μετα του αρχισωματοφυλακος, κατεκρημνισε τα τειχη της Ιερουσαλημ κυκλω.
Then Nebuzaradan, the leader of the military, carried away the rest of the people, who had remained in the city, and the fugitives, who had fled over to the king of Babylon, and the remnant of the common people.11 Το δε υπολοιπον του λαου, το εναπολειφθεν εν τη πολει, και τους φυγοντας, οιτινες προσεφυγον προς τον βασιλεα της Βαβυλωνος, και το εναπολειφθεν του πληθους μετωκισεν ο Νεβουζαραδαν ο αρχισωματοφυλαξ.
But he left behind some vinedressers and farmers from the poor of the land.12 Εκ των πτωχων ομως της γης αφηκεν ο αρχισωματοφυλαξ, δια αμπελουργους και γεωργους.
Now the pillars of brass which were in the temple of the Lord, and the bases, and the sea of brass, which was in the house of the Lord, the Chaldeans broke apart. And they took all the brass to Babylon.13 Και τους στυλους τους χαλκινους, τους εν τω οικω του Κυριου, και τας βασεις και την χαλκινην θαλασσαν την εν τω οικω του Κυριου, οι Χαλδαιοι κατεκοψαν και μετεκομισαν τον χαλκον αυτων εις την Βαβυλωνα.
Also, they took away the cooking pots of brass, and the scoops, and the forks, and the cups, and the little mortars, and all the articles of brass with which they were ministering.14 Ελαβον δε και τους λεβητας και τα πτυαρια και τα λυχνοψαλιδα και τα θυμιατηρια και παντα τα σκευη τα χαλκινα, δια των οποιων εγινετο η υπηρεσια.
And the leader of the military even took away the censers and the bowls, whatever was of gold for the gold, and whatever was of silver for the silver,15 Ελαβε προσετι ο αρχισωματοφυλαξ και τα πυροδοχεια και τας φιαλας, ο, τι ητο χρυσουν και ο, τι αργυρουν?
and also the two pillars, the one sea, and the bases which Solomon had made for the temple of the Lord. The brass of all these items was beyond measure.16 τους δυο στυλους, την μιαν θαλασσαν και τας βασεις, τας οποιας ο Σολομων εκαμε δια τον οικον του Κυριου? ο χαλκος παντων τουτων των σκευων ητο αζυγιστος.
One pillar had eighteen cubits in height. And the head of brass upon it was three cubits in height. And the network and pomegranates upon the head of the pillar were all of brass. And the second pillar had a similar adornment.17 Το υψος του ενος στυλου ητο δεκαοκτω πηχων, και το κιονοκρανον το επ' αυτου χαλκινον.
Also, the leader of the military took away Seraiah, the chief priest, and Zephaniah, the second priest, and three doorkeepers,18 Και ελαβεν ο αρχισωματοφυλαξ Σεραιαν τον πρωτον ιερεα και Σοφονιαν τον δευτερον ιερεα και τους τρεις θυρωρους?
and from the city, one eunuch, who was in charge of the men of war, and five men out of those who had stood before the king, whom he found in the city, and Sopher, the leader of the army who trained the young soldiers from the people of the land, and sixty men from the common people, who had been found in the city.19 και εκ της πολεως ελαβεν ενα ευνουχον, οστις ητο επιστατης επι των ανδρων των πολεμιστων, και πεντε ανδρας εκ των παρισταμενων εμπροσθεν του βασιλεως, τους ευρεθεντας εν τη πολει, και τον γραμματεα τον αρχοντα των στρατευματων, οστις εκαμνε την στρατολογιαν του λαου της γης, και εξηκοντα ανδρας εκ του λαου της γης, τους ευρεθεντας εν τη πολει.
Taking them, Nebuzaradan, the leader of the military, led them to the king of Babylon at Riblah.20 Και λαβων αυτους Νεβουζαραδαν ο αρχισωματοφυλαξ, εφερεν αυτους προς τον βασιλεα της Βαβυλωνος εις Ριβλα.
And the king of Babylon struck them and killed them at Riblah, in the land of Hamath. And Judah was taken away from his land.21 Και επαταξεν αυτους ο βασιλευς της Βαβυλωνος και εθανατωσεν αυτους εν Ριβλα, εν τη γη Αιμαθ. Ουτω μετωκισθη ο Ιουδας απο της γης αυτου.
But over the people who had remained in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had permitted, he appointed as ruler Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan.22 Περι δε του λαου του εναπολειφθεντος εν τη γη Ιουδα, τους οποιους Ναβουχοδονοσορ ο βασιλευς της Βαβυλωνος αφηκεν, επι τουτους κατεστησε Γεδαλιαν τον υιον του Αχικαμ, υιου του Σαφαν.
And when all the commanders of the military had heard this, they and the men who were with them, specifically, that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah, they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah: Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and Seraiah, the son of Tanhumeth, the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah, the son of a Maacathite, they and their companions.23 Ακουσαντες δε παντες οι αρχοντες των στρατευματων, αυτοι και οι ανδρες αυτων, οτι ο βασιλευς της Βαβυλωνος κατεστησε τον Γεδαλιαν, ηλθον προς τον Γεδαλιαν εις Μισπα, και Ισμαηλ ο υιος του Νεθανιου και Ιωαναν ο υιος του Καρηα και Σεραιας ο υιος του Τανουμεθ ο Νετωφαθιτης και Ιααζανιας, υιος Μααχαθιτου τινος, αυτοι και οι ανδρες αυτων.
And Gedaliah swore to them and to their companions, saying: “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Remain in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.”24 Και ωμοσεν ο Γεδαλιας προς αυτους και προς τους ανδρας αυτων και ειπε προς αυτους, Μη φοβεισθε να ησθε δουλοι των Χαλδαιων. Κατοικησατε εν τη γη και δουλευετε τον βασιλεα της Βαβυλωνος? και θελει εισθαι καλον εις εσας.
But it happened that, in the seventh month, Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of royal offspring, and ten men with him, went and struck Gedaliah, who then died, along with the Jews and the Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah.25 Εν δε τω εβδομω μηνι, Ισμαηλ ο υιος του Νεθανιου, υιου του Ελισαμα, εκ του βασιλικου σπερματος, ηλθεν, εχων μεθ' εαυτου δεκα ανδρας, και επαταξαν τον Γεδαλιαν, ωστε απεθανε, και τους Ιουδαιους και Χαλδαιους, τους οντας μετ' αυτου εν Μισπα.
And all the people, from small to great, and the leaders of the military, rising up, went away to Egypt, fearing the Chaldeans.26 Και εσηκωθη πας ο λαος, απο μικρου εως μεγαλου, και οι αρχοντες των στρατευματων, και ηλθον εις την Αιγυπτον? διοτι εφοβηθησαν απο προσωπου των Χαλδαιων.
Truly, it happened that, in the thirty-seventh year of the transmigration of Jehoiachin, the king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, Evilmerodach, the king of Babylon, in the year when he had begun to reign, lifted up the head of Jehoiachin, the king of Judah, from prison.27 Εν δε τω τριακοστω εβδομω ετει της μετοικεσιας του Ιωαχειν βασιλεως του Ιουδα, τον δωδεκατον μηνα, την εικοστην εβδομην του μηνος, ο Ευειλ-μερωδαχ βασιλευς της Βαβυλωνος, κατα το ετος καθ' ο εβασιλευσεν, υψωσεν εκ της φυλακης την κεφαλην του Ιωαχειν βασιλεως του Ιουδα?
And he spoke kindly to him. And he set his throne above the throne of the kings who were with him at Babylon.28 και ελαλησεν ευμενως μετ' αυτου, και εθεσε τον θρονον αυτου επανωθεν του θρονου των βασιλεων, των μετ' αυτου εν Βαβυλωνι.
And he changed his garments that he had worn in prison. And he ate bread before him always, during all the days of his life.29 και ηλλαξε τα ιματια της φυλακης αυτου? και ετρωγεν αρτον παντοτε μετ' αυτου πασας τας ημερας της ζωης αυτου?
Also, he appointed to him an allowance without ceasing, which also was given to him by the king, for each day, during all the days of his life.30 και το σιτηρεσιον αυτου ητο παντοτεινον σιτηρεσιον, διδομενον εις αυτον παρα του βασιλεως, ημερησιος χορηγια πασας τας ημερας της ζωης αυτου.
