Then, too, the queen of Sheba, having heard of the fame of Solomon in the name of the Lord, arrived to test him with enigmas.1 La reine de Saba apprit la renommée de Salomon et vint éprouver celui-ci par des énigmes.
And entering into Jerusalem with a great retinue, and with riches, and with camels carrying aromatics, and with an exceedingly great quantity of gold and precious stones, she went to king Solomon. And she spoke to him all that she held in her heart.2 Elle arriva à Jérusalem avec une très grande suite, des chameaux chargés d'aromates, d'or en énormequantité et de pierres précieuses. Quand elle fut arrivée auprès de Salomon, elle lui proposa tout ce qu'elle avaitmédité,
And Solomon taught her, in all the words that she had proposed to him. There was not any word which was able to be hidden from the king, or which he did not answer for her.3 mais Salomon l'éclaira sur toutes ses questions et aucune ne fut pour le roi un secret qu'il ne pûtélucider.
Then, when the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built,4 Lorsque la reine de Saba vit toute la sagesse de Salomon, le palais qu'il s'était construit,
and the food of his table, and the dwelling places of his servants, and the rows of his ministers, and their apparel, and the cupbearers, and the holocausts that he was offering in the house of the Lord, she had no longer any spirit in her.5 le menu de sa table, le placement de ses officiers, le service de ses gens et leur livrée, son service àboire, les holocaustes qu'il offrait au Temple de Yahvé, le coeur lui manqua
And she said to the king: “The word is true, which I have heard in my own land,6 et elle dit au roi: "Ce que j'ai entendu dire sur toi et ta sagesse dans mon pays était donc vrai!
about your words and your wisdom. But I did not believe those who explained it to me, until I went myself and saw it with my own eyes. And I have discovered that the half of it has not been told to me: your wisdom and works are greater than the report that I have heard.7 Je n'ai pas voulu croire ce qu'on disait avant de venir et de voir de mes yeux, mais vraiment on nem'en avait pas appris la moitié: tu surpasses en sagesse et en prospérité la renommée dont j'ai eu l'écho.
Blessed are your men, and blessed are your servants, who stand before you always, and who hear your wisdom.8 Bienheureuses tes femmes, bienheureux tes serviteurs que voici, qui se tiennent continuellementdevant toi et qui entendent ta sagesse!
Blessed is the Lord your God, whom you have greatly pleased, and who has placed you upon the throne of Israel. For the Lord loves Israel forever, and he has appointed you as king, so that you may accomplish judgment and justice.”9 Béni soit Yahvé ton Dieu qui t'a montré sa faveur en te plaçant sur le trône d'Israël; c'est parce queYahvé aime Israël pour toujours qu'il t'a établi roi, pour exercer le droit et la justice."
Then she gave the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and an exceedingly great amount of aromatics and precious stones. No greater quantity of aromatics was ever again brought forth as these, which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.10 Elle donna au roi 120 talents d'or, une grande quantité d'aromates et des pierres précieuses; la reinede Saba avait apporté au roi Salomon une abondance d'aromates telle qu'il n'en vint plus jamais de pareille.
Then, too, the navy of Hiram, which carried gold from Ophir, brought an exceedingly great quantity of thyine wood and precious stones from Ophir.11 De même, la flotte d'Hiram, qui apporta l'or d'Ophir, en rapporta du bois d'almuggim en grandequantité et des pierres précieuses.
And the king made, from the thyine wood, the posts of the house of the Lord, and of the house of the king, and citharas and lyres for the musicians. No thyine trees of this kind were ever again brought forth or seen, even to the present day.12 Le roi fit avec le bois d'almuggim des supports pour le Temple de Yahvé et pour le palais royal, des lyres et des harpes pour les musiciens; il ne vint plus de ce bois d'almuggim et on n'en a plus vu jusqu'àmaintenant.
Then king Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all that she desired and requested of him, aside from what he himself had offered to her from his royal bounty.
Now the weight of the gold that was brought to Solomon each year was six hundred sixty-six talents of gold,14 Le poids de l'or qui arriva à Salomon en une année fut de 666 talents d'or,
aside from what was brought to him by the men who were over the tributes, and by the merchants, and by those selling every kind of small item, and by all the kings of Arabia, and by the rulers of the land.15 sans compter ce qui venait des redevances des marchands, du gain des commerçants et de tous lesrois des Arabes et des gouverneurs du pays.
Also, king Solomon made two hundred large shields from the purest gold. He dispensed six hundred shekels of gold for the layers of one shield.16 Le roi Salomon fit 200 grands boucliers d'or battu, sur chacun desquels il appliqua 600 sicles d'or,
And for the three hundred crescent-shaped shields of tested gold, there were three hundred minas of gold covering one shield. And the king placed these in the house of the forest of Lebanon.17 et 300 petits boucliers d'or battu, sur chacun desquels il appliqua trois mines d'or, et il les déposadans la Maison de la Forêt du Liban.
Also, king Solomon made a great throne from ivory. And he clothed it with a great quantity of red gold.18 Le roi fit aussi un grand trône d'ivoire et le plaqua d'or raffiné.
The throne had six steps, and the summit of the throne was rounded in the back section. And there were two hands, on one side and the other, holding the seat. And two lions were standing beside each hand,19 Ce trône avait six degrés, un dossier à sommet arrondi, et des bras de part et d'autre du siège; deuxlions étaient debout près des bras
with twelve little lions standing upon the six steps, on one side and the other. No similar work has been made, ever in any kingdom.20 et douze lions se tenaient de part et d'autre des six degrés. On n'a rien fait de semblable dans aucunroyaume.
Moreover, all the vessels from which king Solomon would drink were of gold. And all the items in the house of the forest of Lebanon were of the purest gold. There was no silver, nor was any accounting made of silver in the days of Solomon.21 Tous les vases à boire du roi Salomon étaient en or et tout le mobilier de la Maison de la Forêt duLiban était en or fin; car on faisait fi de l'argent au temps de Salomon.
For the navy of the king, once every three years, went with the navy of Hiram by sea to Tarshish, bringing from there gold, and silver, and elephant tusks, and primates, and peacocks.22 En effet, le roi avait en mer une flotte de Tarsis avec la flotte d'Hiram et tous les trois ans la flottede Tarsis revenait chargée d'or, d'argent, d'ivoire, de singes et de guenons.
And so, king Solomon was magnified above all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom.23 Le roi Salomon surpassa en richesse et en sagesse tous les rois de la terre.
And all the earth desired to see the face of Solomon, so as to hear his wisdom, which God had granted to his heart.24 Tout le monde voulait être reçu par Salomon pour profiter de la sagesse que Dieu lui avait mise aucoeur
And each one brought him gifts, vessels of silver and of gold, clothing and weapons of war, as well as aromatics, and horses, and mules, throughout each year.25 et chacun apportait son présent: vases d'argent et vases d'or, vêtements, armes, aromates, chevauxet mulets, et ainsi d'année en année.
And Solomon gathered together the chariots and horsemen. And he had one thousand four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. And he placed them in the walled cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.26 Salomon rassembla des chars et des chevaux; il eut 1.400 chars et 12.000 chevaux et il lescantonna dans les villes des chars et près du roi à Jérusalem.
And he caused silver to be as abundant in Jerusalem as stones, and he supplied a multitude of cedars like the sycamores that grow in the plains.27 Le roi fit que l'argent était aussi commun à Jérusalem que les cailloux, et les cèdres aussinombreux que les sycomores du Bas-Pays.
And horses were brought for Solomon from Egypt and from Kue. For the merchants of the king were buying these from Kue. And they paid out the established price.28 Les chevaux de Salomon venaient de Muçur et de Cilicie; les courtiers du roi les importaient deCilicie à prix d'argent.
Now a four-horse chariot would be sent from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for one hundred and fifty. And in this manner, all the kings of the Hittites and of Syria were selling horses.29 Un char était livré d'Egypte pour 600 sicles d'argent; un cheval en valait 150. Il en était de mêmepour les rois des Hittites et les rois d'Aram qui les importaient par leur entremise.
