Genesis 47

1 And so Joseph entered and reported to Pharaoh, saying: “My father and brothers, their sheep and herds, and everything that they possess, have arrived from the land of Canaan. And behold, they stand together in the land of Goshen.”	1 Luego José fue a informar al Faraón, diciendo: «Mi padre y mis hermanos vinieron de Canaán con sus ovejas, sus vacas y todo lo que poseen, y ahora están en la región de Gosen».
2 Likewise, he stood in the sight of the king five men, the last of his brothers.	2 Además, él se había hecho acompañar por algunos de sus hermanos y se los presentó al Faraón.
3 And he questioned them, “What do you have for work?” They responded: “Your servants are pastors of sheep, both we and our fathers.	3 Este les preguntó: «Y ustedes, ¿de qué se ocupan?». «Somos pastores, como también lo fueron nuestros antepasados», respondieron ellos.
4 We came to sojourn in your land, because there is no grass for the flocks of your servants, the famine being very grievous in the land of Canaan. And we petition you that you may order us, your servants, to be in the land of Goshen.”	4 Y añadieron: «Hemos venido a residir en este país, porque en Canaán no hay pastos para nuestros rebaños, ya que el país está asolado por el hambre. Por eso te rogamos que nos dejes permanecer en la región de Gosen».
5 And so the king said to Joseph: “Your father and brothers have come to you.	5 El Faraón dijo a José:
6 The land of Egypt is in your sight. Cause them to live in the best place, and deliver to them the land of Goshen. And if you know there to be industrious men among them, appoint these as foremen over my cattle.”	6 «Pueden establecerse en la región de Gosen. Y si te consta que entre ellos hay gente capaz, encomiéndales el cuidado de mis propios rebaños».
7 After this, Joseph brought in his father to the king, and he stood him in his sight. He blessed him,	7 José hizo venir a su padre Jacob y se lo presentó al Faraón. Jacob saludó respetuosamente al Faraón,
8 and he questioned him: “How many are the days of the years of your life?”	8 y este le preguntó: «¿Cuántos años tienes?».
9 He responded, “The days of my sojourn are one hundred and thirty years, few and unworthy, and they do not reach even to the days of the sojourning of my fathers.”	9 Jacob respondió al Faraón: «Los años que se me han concedido suman ya ciento treinta. Pocos y desdichados han sido estos años de mi vida, y ni siquiera se acercan a los que fueron concedidos a mis padres».
10 And blessing the king, he went outside.	10 Luego Jacob volvió a saludar al Faraón y salió de allí.
11 Truly, Joseph gave his father and brothers a possession in Egypt, in the best place of the land, in Rameses, as Pharaoh had instructed.	11 José instaló a su padre y a sus hermanos, dándoles una propiedad en Egipto, en las mejores tierras –en la región de Ramsés– como el Faraón lo había dispuesto.
12 And he fed them, along with all his father’s house, providing portions of food to each one.	12 Y también proveyó al sostenimiento de su padre, de sus hermanos, y de toda la familia de su padre, según las necesidades de cada uno.
13 For in the whole world there was a lack of bread, and a famine had oppressed the land, most of all Egypt and Canaan,	13 Como la escasez era muy grande, en ningún país había alimentos, y tanto Egipto como Canaán estaban exhaustos por el hambre.
14 from which he gathered together all the money for the grain that they bought, and he took it into the treasury of the king.	14 Así José pudo recaudar todo el dinero que circulaba en Egipto y en Canaán, como pago por los víveres que compraban, y guardó ese dinero en el palacio del Faraón.
15 And when the buyers had run out of money, all Egypt came to Joseph, saying: “Give us bread. Why should we die in your sight, lacking money?”	15 Y cuando ya no hubo más dinero ni en Egipto ni en Canaán, los egipcios acudieron en masa a José para decirle: «Danos de comer. ¿Por qué tendremos que morir ante tus propios ojos, por falta de dinero?».
16 And he responded to them: “Bring me your cattle, and I will give food to you in exchange for them, if you do not have money.”	16 José respondió: «Si ya no hay más dinero, entreguen su ganado y yo les daré pan a cambio de él».
17 And when they had brought them, he gave them food for their horses, and sheep, and oxen, and donkeys. And he sustained them in that year in exchange for their cattle.	17 Ellos trajeron sus animales a José, y él les dio pan a cambio de caballos, ovejas, vacas y asnos. Y durante aquel año los abasteció de víveres a cambio de todos sus animales.
18 Likewise, they came the second year, and they said to him: “We will not conceal from our lord that our money is gone; likewise our cattle are gone. Neither are you unaware that we have nothing left but our bodies and our land.	18 Pero pasó ese año, y al año siguiente vinieron otra vez y dijeron a José: «Ya se ha terminado todo el dinero y los animales te pertenecen. No podemos ocultarte que no queda nada a tu disposición, fuera de nuestras personas y nuestras tierras.
19 Therefore, why should you watch us die? Both we and our land will be yours. Buy us into royal servitude, but provide seed, lest by the dying off of cultivators the land be reduced to a wilderness.”	19 Pero ¿por qué tendremos que morir ante tus propios ojos, nosotros y nuestras tierras: Aduéñate de nosotros y de nuestras tierras a cambio de pan. Así el Faraón será dueño de nosotros y de nuestras tierras. Danos solamente semilla para que podamos sobrevivir. De lo contrario, nosotros moriremos, y el suelo se convertirá en un desierto».
20 Therefore, Joseph bought all the land of Egypt, each one selling his possessions because of the magnitude of the famine. And he subjected it to Pharaoh,	20 De esa manera, José adquirió para el Faraón todas las tierras de Egipto, porque los egipcios, acosados por el hambre, vendieron cada uno su campo. La tierra pasó a ser propiedad del Faraón,
21 along with all of its people, from the newest borders of Egypt, even to its furthest limits,	21 y el pueblo quedó sometido a servidumbre de un extremo al otro del territorio egipcio.
22 except the land of the priests, which had been delivered to them by the king. To these also a portion of food was supplied out of the public storehouses, and, for this reason, they were not compelled to sell their possessions.	22 Los únicos terrenos que José no compró fueron los que pertenecían a los sacerdotes, porque a ellos el Faraón le había asignado una ración fija de alimentos; como vivían de la ración que les daba el Faraón, no tuvieron que vender sus tierras.
23 Therefore, Joseph said to the people: “So, as you discern, both you and your lands are possessed by Pharaoh; take seed and sow the fields,	23 Entonces José dijo al pueblo: «Ahora ustedes y sus tierras pertenecen al Faraón, porque yo los he comprado. Aquí tienen semilla para sembrar esas tierras.
24 so that you may be able to have grain. One fifth part you will give to the king; the remaining four I permit to you, as seed and as food for your families and children.	24 Pero cuando llegue la cosecha, ustedes deberán entregar al Faraón una quinta parte de los productos, y conservarán las cuatro partes restantes para sembrar la tierra, para alimentarse ustedes y sus familias, y para dar de comer a los niños».
25 And they responded: “Our health is in your hand; only let our lord look kindly upon us, and we will serve the king with gladness.”	25 Ellos exclamaron: «Tú nos salvaste la vida. Te agradecemos que nos hayas puesto al servicio del Faraón».
26 From that time, even to the present day, in the entire land of Egypt, the fifth part is turned over to the kings, and it has become like a law, except in the land of the priests, which was free from this condition.	26 Entonces José promulgó una ley agraria en Egipto –que todavía hoy está en vigencia– por la cual una quinta parte de las cosechas corresponde al Faraón. Sólo las tierras de los sacerdotes no pasaron a ser propiedad del Faraón.
27 And so, Israel lived in Egypt, that is, in the land of Goshen, and he possessed it. And he increased and was multiplied exceedingly.	27 Los israelitas se establecieron en Egipto, en la región de Gosen, y allí adquirieron propiedades, tuvieron muchos hijos y llegaron a ser muy numerosos.
28 And he lived in it seventeen years. And all the days of his life that passed were one hundred and forty-seven years.	28 Jacob vivió diecisiete años en Egipto, y en total vivió ciento cuarenta y siete años.
29 And when he discerned that the day of his death was approaching, he called his son Joseph, and he said to him: “If I have found favor in your sight, place your hand under my thigh. And you shall show me mercy and truth, not to bury me in Egypt.	29 Cuando estaba a punto de morir, llamó a su hijo José y le dijo: «Si realmente me tienes afecto, coloca tu mano debajo de mi muslo, como prueba de tu constante lealtad hacia mí, y no me entierres en Egipto.
30 But I shall sleep with my fathers, and you will carry me from this land and bury me in the sepulcher of my ancestors.” And Joseph answered him, “I will do what you have ordered.”	30 Cuando vaya a descansar junto con mis padres, sácame de Egipto y entiérrame en su sepulcro». José respondió: «Haré lo que dices».
31 And he said, “Then swear it to me.” And as he was swearing, Israel adored God, turning to the head of his resting place.	31 Pero su padre insistió: «Júramelo». El se lo juró, e Israel se reclinó sobre la cabecera de su lecho.
