1 Truly, Adam knew his wife Eve, who conceived and gave birth to Cain, saying, “I have obtained a man through God.”	1 L’homme s’unit à Ève, sa femme, elle conçut et enfanta Caïn. Elle dit à cette occasion: “Je me suis acquis un homme, grâce à Yahvé.”
2 And again she gave birth to his brother Abel. But Abel was a pastor of sheep, and Cain was a farmer.	2 Ensuite elle enfanta Abel, le frère de Caïn. Abel était berger de petit bétail et son frère Caïn cultivait le sol.
3 Then it happened, after many days, that Cain offered gifts to the Lord, from the fruits of the earth.	3 Il arriva quelque temps plus tard que Caïn apporta des fruits du sol pour les offrir à Yahvé.
4 Abel likewise offered from the firstborn of his flock, and from their fat. And the Lord looked with favor on Abel and his gifts.	4 Abel de son côté présenta les premiers-nés de son petit bétail avec leur graisse. Yahvé regarda avec plaisir Abel et son offrande,
5 Yet in truth, he did not look with favor on Cain and his gifts. And Cain was vehemently angry, and his countenance fell.	5 mais il ne fit pas attention à Caïn et à son offrande. Caïn fut très en colère et son visage se durcit.
6 And the Lord said to him: “Why are you angry? And why is your face fallen?	6 Alors Yahvé dit à Caïn: “Pourquoi es-tu en colère, pourquoi ton visage est-il si dur?
7 If you behave well, will you not receive? But if you behave badly, will not sin at once be present at the door? And so its desire will be within you, and you will be dominated by it.”	7 Si tu fais ce qui est bien, tu pourras relever la tête, mais si tu n’agis pas bien, le péché est couché devant ta porte prêt à se jeter sur toi; c’est à toi de le dominer.”
8 And Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go outside.” And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and he put him to death.	8 Caïn dit à Abel son frère: “Allons dans la campagne.” Et comme ils étaient dans la campagne, Caïn se jeta sur son frère Abel et le tua.
9 And the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” And he responded: “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”	9 Yahvé dit à Caïn: “Où est ton frère Abel?” Celui-ci répondit: “Je n’en sais rien; suis-je le gardien de mon frère?”
10 And he said to him: “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the land.	10 Il dit: “Qu’as-tu fait? Un cri monte du sol vers moi, c’est le sang de ton frère!
11 Now, therefore, you will be cursed upon the land, which opened its mouth and received the blood of your brother at your hand.	11 Sois maudit maintenant de par le sol qui a ouvert sa bouche pour recevoir le sang de ton frère.
12 When you work it, it will not give you its fruit; a vagrant and a fugitive shall you be upon the land.”	12 Lorsque tu cultiveras le sol, il ne te donnera plus ses produits. Tu iras errant comme un fuyard sur la terre.”
13 And Cain said to the Lord: “My iniquity is too great to deserve kindness.	13 Caïn dit à Yahvé: “Ma condamnation est trop dure, je ne peux la porter!
14 Behold, you have cast me out this day before the face of the earth, and from your face I will be hidden; and I will be a vagrant and a fugitive on the earth. Therefore, anyone who finds me will kill me.”	14 Regarde, tu me chasses aujourd’hui du sol cultivable et je devrai me cacher loin de toi. J’irai errant comme un fuyard sur la terre et quiconque me rencontrera pourra me tuer.”
15 And the Lord said to him: “By no means will it be so; rather, whoever would kill Cain, will be punished sevenfold.” And the Lord placed a seal upon Cain, so that anyone who found him would not put him to death.	15 Yahvé lui dit: “Eh bien, si quelqu’un tue Caïn, Caïn sera vengé sept fois!” Alors Yahvé mit un signe sur Caïn pour qu’il ne soit pas frappé par le premier venu.
16 And so Cain, departing from the face of the Lord, lived as a fugitive on the earth, toward the eastern region of Eden.	16 Caïn s’éloigna de devant Dieu et il habita au pays de Nod, à l’orient d’Éden.
17 Then Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. And he built a city, and he called its name by the name of his son, Enoch.	17 Caïn s’unit à sa femme, elle conçut et enfanta Hénok. Puis il construisit une ville et lui donna le nom de son fils Hénok.
18 Thereafter, Enoch conceived Irad, and Irad conceived Mahujael, and Mahujael conceived Mathusael, and Mathusael conceived Lamech.	18 Hénok eut un fils, Irad, et Irad engendra Méhouyaël. Méhouyaël engendra Métouchaël et Métouchaël engendra Lamek.
19 Lamech took two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.	19 Lamek prit deux femmes, la première s’appelait Ada et la seconde s’appelait Sila.
20 And Adah conceived Jabel, who was the father of those who live in tents and are shepherds.	20 Ada enfanta Yabal, il fut le père de ceux qui vivent sous la tente parmi les troupeaux.
21 And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of those who sing to the harp and the organ.	21 Le nom de son frère était Youbal, il fut le père de tous ceux qui jouent de la lyre et de la flûte.
22 Zillah also conceived Tubalcain, who was a hammerer and artisan in every work of brass and iron. In fact, the sister of Tubalcain was Noema.	22 De son côté, Sila enfanta Toubal-Caïn, il fut le père de tous ceux qui travaillent le cuivre et le fer. La sœur de Toubal-Caïn était Naama.
23 And Lamech said to his wives Adah and Zillah: “Listen to my voice, you wives of Lamech, pay attention to my speech. For I have killed a man to my own harm, and an adolescent to my own bruising.	23 Lamek dit à ses femmes Ada et Sila: “Écoutez ma voix, femmes de Lamek, prêtez l’oreille à ma parole: J’ai tué un homme pour une blessure, un garçon pour une égratignure.
24 Sevenfold vengeance will be given for Cain, but for Lamech, seventy-seven times.”	24 Car si Caïn est vengé sept fois, Lamek le sera soixante-dix-sept fois.”
25 Adam also knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Seth, saying, “God has given me another offspring, in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.”	25 Adam s’unit à sa femme, elle enfanta un fils et lui donna le nom de Seth, car, dit-elle: “Dieu m’a donné une autre descendance à la place d’Abel que Caïn a tué.”
26 But to Seth also was born a son, whom he called Enos. This one began to invoke the name of the Lord.	26 Seth eut un fils et il lui donna le nom d’Énos. Celui-ci fut le premier à invoquer Yahvé par son nom.
