1 But afterwards, he heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, “Jacob has taken all that was our father’s, and being enlarged by his ability, he has become famous.”	1 Jakob hatte erfahren, dass die Söhne Labans sagten: Jakob hat alles, was unserem Vater gehört, weggenommen; auf Kosten unseres Vaters hat er sich so bereichert.
2 Likewise, he observed that Laban’s face was not the same toward him as it was yesterday and the day before.	2 Jakob sah Laban ins Gesicht: Laban war ihm nicht mehr zugetan wie früher.
3 Most importantly, the Lord was saying to him, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your generation, and I will be with you.”	3 Da sagte der Herr zu Jakob: Kehr zurück in das Land deiner Väter und zu deiner Verwandtschaft! Ich bin mit dir.
4 He sent and called for Rachel and Leah, in the field where he pastured the flocks,	4 Jakob ließ Rahel und Lea auf das Feld zu seiner Herde rufen
5 and he said to them: “I see that your father’s face is not the same toward me as it was yesterday and the day before. But the God of my father has been with me.	5 und sagte zu ihnen: Ich sehe am Gesicht eures Vaters, dass er mir nicht mehr so gesinnt ist wie früher. Aber der Gott meines Vaters war mit mir.
6 And you know that I have served your father with all my strength.	6 Ihr wisst, dass ich mit allen Kräften eurem Vater gedient habe.
7 Even so, your father has circumvented me, and he has changed my wages ten times. And yet God has not permitted him to harm me.	7 Aber euer Vater hat mich hintergangen und meinen Lohn zehnmal geändert; Gott freilich hat ihn daran gehindert, mich zu schädigen.
8 Whenever he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ all the sheep gave birth to speckled newborns. Yet truly, when he said the contrary, ‘You will take whatever is white for your wages,’ all the flocks gave birth to white ones.	8 Sagte er, die Gesprenkelten sollen dein Lohn sein, dann warfen alle Tiere gesprenkelte Junge; sagte er, die Gestreiften sollen dein Lohn sein, dann warfen alle Tiere gestreifte Junge.
9 And it is God who has taken your father’s substance and given it to me.	9 Gott hat eurem Vater den Viehbestand entzogen und ihn mir gegeben.
10 For after the time had arrived for the ewes to conceive, I lifted up my eyes, and I saw in my sleep that the males climbing on the females were of variegated, and spotted, and diverse colors.	10 Zur Zeit, da die Tiere brünstig waren, hatte ich einen Traum; ich sah: Gestreifte, gesprenkelte und fleckige Böcke besprangen die Tiere.
11 And the Angel of God said to me in my sleep, ‘Jacob.’ And I responded, ‘Here I am.’	11 Der Engel Gottes sprach im Traum zu mir: Jakob! Ich antwortete: Hier bin ich.
12 And he said: ‘Lift up your eyes, and see that all the males climbing on the females are variegated, spotted, and also speckled. For I have seen all that Laban has done to you.	12 Dann sprach er: Schau hin: Alle Böcke, welche die Tiere bespringen, sind gestreift, gesprenkelt oder gefleckt. Ich habe nämlich alles gesehen, was dir Laban antut.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the stone and made a vow to me. Now therefore arise, and depart from this land, returning to the land of your nativity.’ ”	13 Ich bin der Gott von Bet-El, wo du das Steinmal gesalbt und mir ein Gelübde gemacht hast. Jetzt auf, zieh fort aus diesem Land und kehr in deine Heimat zurück!
14 And Rachel and Leah responded: “Have we anything left behind among the resources and inheritance of our father’s house?	14 Rahel und Lea antworteten ihm: Haben wir noch Anteil oder Erbe im Haus unseres Vaters?
15 Has he not considered us as foreigners, and sold us, and consumed our price?	15 Gelten wir ihm nicht wie Fremde? Er hat uns ja verkauft und sogar unser Geld aufgezehrt.
16 But God has taken our father’s riches and handed these to us and to our sons. Therefore, do all that God has instructed you.”	16 Ja, der ganze Reichtum, den Gott unserem Vater weggenommen hat, uns gehört er und unseren Söhnen. Nun also, tu jetzt alles, was Gott dir gesagt hat.
17 And so Jacob rose up, and having placed the children and his wives upon camels, he went forth.	17 Da machte sich Jakob auf, hob seine Söhne und Frauen auf die Kamele
18 And he took all his substance and flocks, and whatever he had acquired in Mesopotamia, and he journeyed to his father Isaac, in the land of Canaan.	18 und führte sein ganzes Vieh fort, seinen ganzen Besitz an Vieh, den er in Paddan-Aram erworben hatte, um zu seinem Vater Isaak nach Kanaan zurückzukehren.
19 At that time, Laban had gone to shear the sheep, and so Rachel stole her father’s idols.	19 Laban war weggegangen, um seine Schafe zu scheren; da stahl Rahel die Götterbilder ihres Vaters
20 And Jacob was not willing to confess to his father-in-law that he was fleeing.	20 und Jakob überlistete den Aramäer Laban: Er verriet ihm nicht, dass er sich davonmachen wollte.
21 And when he had gone away with all such things that were justly his, and, having crossed the river, was continuing on toward Mount Gilead,	21 Mit allem, was ihm gehörte, machte er sich auf und davon. Er überquerte den Strom (den Eufrat) und schlug die Richtung zum Gebirge von Gilead ein.
22 it was reported to Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled.	22 Am dritten Tag meldete man Laban, Jakob sei auf und davon.
23 And taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days. And he overtook him at Mount Gilead.	23 Da nahm Laban seine Brüder mit und jagte ihm sieben Tage lang nach. Im Gebirge von Gilead war er ihm schon ganz nahe.
24 And he saw in a dream, God saying to him, “Beware that you not speak anything harsh against Jacob.”	24 Gott aber kam in einem nächtlichen Traum zum Aramäer Laban und sprach zu ihm: Hüte dich, Jakob auch nur das Geringste vorzuwerfen.
25 And now Jacob had pitched his tent at the mountain. And when he, with his brothers, had overtaken him, he set his tent at the same place at Mount Gilead.	25 Laban holte Jakob ein, als dieser gerade im Gebirge die Zelte aufgeschlagen hatte. Da schlug auch Laban mit seinen Brüdern im Gebirge von Gilead die Zelte auf.
26 And he said to Jacob: “Why have you acted this way, departing from me in secret, with my daughters like captives of the sword?	26 Laban sagte nun zu Jakob: Was hast du getan? Du hast mich überlistet und meine Töchter wie Kriegsgefangene weggeführt.
27 Why would you want to flee without my knowledge and without telling me, though I might have led you forward with gladness, and songs, and timbrels, and lyres?	27 Warum hast du mir verheimlicht, dass du dich davonmachen wolltest, und warum hast du mich überlistet und mir nichts gesagt? Ich hätte dir gern das Geleit gegeben mit Gesang, Pauken und Harfen.
28 You have not permitted me to kiss my sons and daughters. You have acted foolishly. And now, indeed,	28 Du hast mir aber nicht einmal gestattet, meine Söhne und Töchter zu küssen. Da hast du töricht gehandelt.
29 my hand has power to repay you with harm. But the God of your father said to me yesterday, ‘Beware that you not speak anything stern against Jacob.’	29 Es stünde in meiner Macht, euch Schlimmes anzutun; aber der Gott eures Vaters hat mir gestern Nacht gesagt: Hüte dich, Jakob auch nur das Geringste vorzuwerfen.
30 It may be that you desired to go to your own, and that you longed for the house of your father. But why have you stolen my gods?”	30 Nun bist du also fortgezogen, weil du Heimweh hattest nach deinem Vaterhaus. Aber warum hast du meine Götter gestohlen?
31 Jacob answered: “I set out, unknown to you, because I feared that you might take away your daughters by violence.	31 Jakob erwiderte Laban: Ich fürchtete mich und meinte, du könntest mir deine Töchter wegnehmen.
32 But, since you accuse me of theft, with whomever you will find your gods, let him be slain in the sight of our brothers. Search; anything of yours that you will find with me, take it away.” Now when he said this, he did not know that Rachel had stolen the idols.	32 Bei wem du aber deine Götter findest, der soll nicht am Leben bleiben. In Gegenwart unserer Brüder durchsuche, was ich habe, und nimm, was dein ist. Jakob wusste nicht, dass Rahel die Götter gestohlen hatte.
33 And so Laban, entering the tent of Jacob, and of Leah, and of both the handmaids, did not find them. And when he had entered the tent of Rachel,	33 Laban betrat das Zelt Jakobs, das Zelt der Lea und das der beiden Mägde, fand aber nichts. Vom Zelt der Lea ging er in das Zelt Rahels.
34 she quickly hid the idols under the camel’s bedding, and she sat upon them. And when he had searched the entire tent and found nothing,	34 Rahel hatte die Götterbilder genommen, sie in die Satteltasche des Kamels gelegt und sich darauf gesetzt. Laban durchstöberte das ganze Zelt, fand aber nichts.
35 she said: “Do not be angry, my lord, that I am unable to rise up in your sight, because it has now happened to me according to the custom of women.” So his careful search was thwarted.	35 Rahel aber sagte zu ihrem Vater: Sei nicht böse, mein Herr! Ich kann vor dir nicht aufstehen, es geht mir gerade, wie es eben Frauen ergeht. Er suchte weiter, die Götterbilder aber fand er nicht.
36 And Jacob, being inflated, said with contention: “For which fault of mine, or for what sin of mine, have you become so enraged against me	36 Da wurde Jakob zornig und begann mit Laban zu streiten. Jakob ergriff das Wort und sagte zu Laban: Was habe ich verbrochen, was habe ich Unrechtes getan, dass du mir nachhetzt?
37 and searched all the items of my house? What have you found from all the substance of your house? Place it here before my brothers, and your brothers, and let them judge between me and you.	37 Alle meine Sachen hast du durchstöbert. Was hast du gefunden an Sachen, die zu deinem Haus gehören? Leg sie her vor meine und deine Brüder und sie sollen zwischen uns beiden entscheiden.
38 For what reason have I been with you for twenty years? Your ewes and she-goats were not barren; the rams of your flocks I did not consume.	38 Schon zwanzig Jahre bin ich bei dir. Deine Schafe und Ziegen hatten keinen Fehlwurf. Die Böcke deiner Herde habe ich nicht aufgezehrt.
39 Neither did I reveal to you what was seized by the wild beast. I replaced all that was damaged. Whatever was lost by theft, you collected it from me.	39 Gerissenes Vieh habe ich dir nicht gebracht; ich habe es selbst ersetzt. Du hättest ja doch Ersatz gefordert, ob es mir nun bei Tag oder bei Nacht abhanden kam.
40 Day and night, I was burned by heat and by frost, and sleep fled from my eyes.	40 So ging es mir: Bei Tag fraß mich die Hitze, der Frost bei Nacht und der Schlaf floh meine Augen.
41 And in this way, for twenty years, I have served you in your house: fourteen for your daughters, and six for your flocks. You have also changed my wages ten times.	41 Schon zwanzig Jahre diene ich in deinem Haus, vierzehn Jahre um deine beiden Töchter und sechs Jahre um dein Vieh. Du aber hast meinen Lohn zehnmal geändert.
42 If the God of my father Abraham and the fear of Isaac had not been close to me, perhaps by now you would have sent me away naked. But God looked kindly on my affliction and the labor of my hands, and he rebuked you yesterday.”	42 Wäre nicht der Gott meines Vaters, der Gott Abrahams und der Schrecken Isaaks, für mich eingetreten, dann hättest du mich jetzt mit leeren Händen weggeschickt. Doch Gott hat mein Elend und die Mühe meiner Hände gesehen und gestern Nacht hat er entschieden.
43 Laban answered him: “My daughters and sons, and your flocks, and all that you discern are mine. What can I do to my sons and grandchildren?	43 Darauf ergriff Laban das Wort und sagte zu Jakob: Die Töchter sind meine Töchter und die Söhne sind meine Söhne und das Vieh ist mein Vieh und alles, was du siehst, gehört mir. Was kann ich heute für meine Töchter tun oder für die Söhne, die sie geboren haben?
44 Come, therefore, let us enter into a pact, so that it may be a testimony between me and you.”	44 Jetzt aber komm, wir wollen einen Vertrag schließen, ich und du. Der Vertrag soll Zeuge sein zwischen mir und dir.
45 And so Jacob took a stone, and he set it up as a memorial.	45 Da nahm Jakob einen Stein und richtete ihn als Steinmal auf.
46 And he said to his brothers, “Bring stones.” And they, gathering together stones, made a tomb, and they ate upon it.	46 Jakob sagte zu seinen Brüdern: Tragt Steine zusammen! Da holten sie Steine und legten einen Steinhügel an. Dort auf dem Steinhügel aßen sie.
47 And Laban called it, ‘Tomb of Witness,’ and Jacob, ‘Pile of Testimony;’ each of them according to the fitness of his own language.	47 Laban nannte ihn Jegar- Sahaduta und Jakob nannte ihn Gal-Ed.
48 And Laban said: “This tomb will be a witness between me and you this day.” (And for this reason, its name has been called Gilead, that is, ‘Tomb of Witness.’)	48 Dieser Steinhügel, sagte Laban, soll heute Zeuge sein zwischen mir und dir. Darum gab er ihm den Namen Gal-Ed (Zeugenhügel)
49 “May the Lord consider and judge between us, when we will have withdrawn from one another.	49 und Mizpa (Spähturm), weil er sagte: Der Herr sei Späher zwischen mir und dir, wenn wir voneinander nichts mehr wissen.
50 If you afflict my daughters, and if you bring in other wives over them, no one is a witness of our words except God, who understands beforehand.”	50 Solltest du meine Töchter schlecht behandeln oder dir außer meinen Töchtern noch andere Frauen nehmen - auch wenn kein Mensch bei uns ist: Sieh, Gott ist Zeuge zwischen mir und dir.
51 And again he said to Jacob. “Lo, this tomb and the stone that I have set up between me and you,	51 Weiter sagte Laban zu Jakob: Hier, dieser Steinhügel, hier, dieses Steinmal, das ich zwischen mir und dir errichtet habe -
52 will be a witness. This tomb,” I say, “and the stone, they are for testimony, in case either I cross beyond it going toward you, or you cross beyond it thinking to harm me.	52 Zeuge sei dieser Steinhügel. Zeuge sei dieses Steinmal: Nie will ich diesen Steinhügel in böser Absicht gegen dich überschreiten und nie sollst du diesen Steinhügel oder dieses Steinmal in böser Absicht gegen mich überschreiten.
53 May the God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” Therefore, Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.	53 Der Gott Abrahams und der Gott Nahors seien Richter zwischen uns. Da leistete Jakob einen Eid beim Schrecken seines Vaters Isaak.
54 And after he had immolated sacrifices on the mountain, he called his brothers to eat bread. And when they had eaten, they lodged there.	54 Dann schlachtete Jakob auf dem Berg ein Opfertier und lud seine Brüder zum Mahl ein. Sie aßen und verbrachten die Nacht auf dem Berg.
55 In truth, Laban rose up in the night, and he kissed his sons and daughters, and he blessed them. And he returned to his place.
