Now Sarai, the wife of Abram, had not conceived children. But, having an Egyptian handmaid named Hagar,1 Saray, mujer de Abram, no le daba hijos.
she said to her husband: “Behold, the Lord has closed me, lest I give birth. Enter to my handmaid, so that perhaps I may receive sons of her at least.” And when he agreed to her supplication,2 y dijo Saray a Abram: «Mira, Yahveh me ha hecho estéril. Llégate, pues, te ruego, a mi esclava. Quizá podré tener hijos de ella.» Y escuchó Abram la voz de Saray.
she took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, ten years after they began to live in the land of Canaan, and she gave her to her husband as a wife.3 Así, al cabo de diez años de habitar Abram en Canaán, tomó Saray, la mujer de Abram, a su esclava Agar la egipcia, y diósela por mujer a su marido Abram.
And he entered to her. But when she saw that she had conceived, she despised her mistress.4 Llegóse, pues, él a Agar, la cual concibió.
And Sarai said to Abram: “You have acted unfairly against me. I gave my handmaid into your bosom, who, when she saw that she had conceived, held me in contempt. May the Lord judge between me and you.”5 Dijo entonces Saray a Abram: «Mi agravio recaiga sobre ti.
Abram responded to her by saying, “Behold, your handmaid is in your hand to treat as it pleases you.” And so, when Sarai afflicted her, she took flight.6 Respondió Abram a Saray: «Ahí tienes a tu esclava en tus manos.
And when the Angel of the Lord had found her, near the fountain of water in the wilderness, which is on the way to Shur in the desert,7 La encontró el Ángel de Yahveh junto a una fuente de agua en el desierto - la fuente que hay en el camino de Sur -
he said to her: “Hagar, handmaid of Sarai, where have you come from? And where will you go?” And she answered, “I flee from the face of Sarai, my mistress.”8 y dijo: «Agar, esclava de Saray, ¿de dónde vienes y a dónde vas?»
And the Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and humble yourself under her hand.”9 «Vuelve a tu señora, le dijo el Ángel de Yahveh, y sométete a ella.»
And again he said, “I will multiply your offspring continuously, and they will not be numbered because of their multitude.”10 Y dijo el Ángel de Yahveh: «Multiplicaré de tal modo tu descendencia, que por su gran multitud no podrá contarse.»
But thereafter he said: “Behold, you have conceived, and you will give birth to a son. And you shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has heard your affliction.11 Y díjole el Ángel de Yahveh: Mira que has concebido, y darás a luz un hijo, al que llamarás Ismael, porque Yahveh ha oído tu aflicción.
He will be a wild man. His hand will be against all, and all hands will be against him. And he will pitch his tents away from the region of all his brothers.”12 Será un onagro humano.
Then she called upon the name of the Lord who had spoken to her: “You are the God who has seen me.” For she said, “Certainly, here I have seen the back of the one who sees me.”13 Dio Agar a Yahveh, que le había hablado, el nombre de «Tú eres El Roí», pues dijo: «¿Si será que he llegado a ver aquí las espaldas de aquel que me ve?»
Because of this, she called that well: ‘The well of the one who lives and who sees me.’ The same is between Kadesh and Bered.14 Por eso se llamó aquel pozo «Pozo de Lajay Roí». Está entre Cadés y Béred.
And Hagar gave birth to a son for Abram, who called his name Ishmael.15 Agar dio a luz un hijo a Abram, y Abram llamó al hijo que Agar le había dado Ismael.
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael for him.16 Tenía Abram 86 años cuando Agar le dio su hijo Ismael.
