1 At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh	1 Allora Giosuè chiamò i Rubeniti, i Gaditi e quelli della mezza tribù di Manasse
2 and said to them: "You have done all that Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you, and have obeyed every command I gave you.	2 e disse loro: "Voi avete osservato tutto quanto vi comandò Mosè servo del Signore e avete obbedito alla mia voce in tutto quello che vi ho comandato;
3 For many years now you have not once abandoned your kinsmen, but have faithfully carried out the commands of the LORD, your God.	3 non avete abbandonato i vostri fratelli in tutto questo lungo periodo fino ad oggi, avete invece osservato tutte le prescrizioni che vi ha imposto il Signore, vostro Dio.
4 Since, therefore, the LORD, your God, has settled your kinsmen as he promised them, you may now return to your tents beyond the Jordan; to your own land, which Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave you.	4 E ora il Signore, vostro Dio, ha dato pace ai vostri fratelli, come aveva loro promesso; ora quindi riprendete la via del ritorno alle vostre tende, alla terra di vostra eredità che vi ha dato Mosè, servo del Signore, al di là del Giordano.
5 But be very careful to observe the precept and law which Moses, the servant of the LORD, enjoined upon you: love the LORD, your God; follow him faithfully; keep his commandments; remain loyal to him; and serve him with your whole heart and soul."	5 Mettete tutta la vostra attenzione nell'osservare le prescrizioni e la legge che vi ha imposto Mosè, servo del Signore, vostro Dio, seguendo tutte le sue direttive e osservando i suoi comandamenti, rimanendo uniti a lui e servendolo con tutto il vostro cuore e tutta la vostra anima".
6 Joshua then blessed them and sent them away to their own tents.	6 Così Giosuè li benedisse e li congedò ed essi tornarono alle loro tende.
7 (For, to half the tribe of Manasseh Moses had assigned land in Bashan; and to the other half Joshua had given a portion along with their kinsmen west of the Jordan.) What Joshua said to them when he sent them off to their tents with his blessing was,	7 A mezza tribù di Manasse Mosè aveva dato un possesso nel Basan, all'altra mezza invece Giosuè lo aveva dato in mezzo ai loro fratelli, di qua dal Giordano, ad ovest. Quando Giosuè li rimandò alle loro tende e li benedisse,
8 "Now that you are returning to your own tents with great wealth, with very numerous livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and with a very large supply of clothing, divide these spoils of your enemies with your kinsmen there."	8 disse loro: "Voi fate ritorno alle vostre tende con grandi ricchezze, con numeroso bestiame, con argento, oro, bronzo e con moltissime vesti: dividete le spoglie dei vostri nemici con i vostri fratelli".
9 So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the other Israelites at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and returned to the land of Gilead, their own property, which they had received according to the LORD'S command through Moses.	9 Partirono quindi i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribù di Manasse dai figli d'Israele da Silo, nella terra di Canaan, per andare nella regione del Gàlaad, la terra di loro proprietà che avevano ricevuto in possesso dietro l'ordine dato dal Signore per mezzo di Mosè.
10 When the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh came to the region of the Jordan in the land of Canaan, they built there at the Jordan a conspicuously large altar.	10 Giunti ai bordi del Giordano, in terra di Canaan, i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribù di Manasse costruirono un altare presso il Giordano, un altare maestoso a vedersi.
11 The other Israelites heard the report that the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had built an altar in the region of the Jordan facing the land of Canaan, across from them,	11 I figli d'Israele sentirono dire: "Ecco che i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribù di Manasse hanno costruito un altare di fronte alla terra di Canaan, ai bordi del Giordano, nella regione dei figli d'Israele".
12 and therefore they assembled their whole community at Shiloh to declare war on them.	12 Quando udirono questo i figli d'Israele, si convocò a Silo l'adunanza dei figli d'Israele, per marciare contro di essi e combatterli.
13 First, however, they sent to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead an embassy consisting of Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest,	13 Intanto i figli d'Israele mandarono ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e alla mezza tribù di Manasse, nella regione del Gàlaad, Finees, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro,
14 and ten princes, one from every tribe of Israel, each one being both prince and military leader of his ancestral house.	14 e con lui dieci prìncipi, un principe per ogni tribù d'Israele, ciascuno dei quali era capo della sua famiglia tra le migliaia d'Israele.
15 When these came to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead, they said to them:	15 Questi vennero dai figli di Ruben, dai figli di Gad e dalla metà della tribù di Manasse nella regione del Gàlaad e parlarono loro in questi termini:
16 "The whole community of the LORD sends this message: What act of treachery is this you have committed against the God of Israel? You have seceded from the LORD this day, and rebelled against him by building an altar of your own!	16 "Così parla tutta la comunità del Signore: Cos'è questa infedeltà che avete commesso contro il Dio d'Israele, rivoltandovi dal Signore, costruendovi un altare, per ribellarvi al Signore?
17 For the sin of Peor, a plague came upon the community of the LORD.	17 Fu forse piccola cosa per noi l'iniquità di Peor, della quale non ci siamo purificati fino ad oggi, che attirò una strage sulla comunità d'Israele?
18 We are still not free of that; must you now add to it? You are rebelling against the LORD today and by tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community of Israel!	18 Voi oggi negate di voler seguire il Signore. Non avverrà, ribellandovi voi oggi contro il Signore, che domani arda l'ira contro tutta la comunità d'Israele?
19 If you consider the land you now possess unclean, cross over to the land the LORD possesses, where the Dwelling of the LORD stands, and share that with us. But do not rebel against the LORD, nor involve us in rebellion, by building an altar of your own in addition to the altar of the LORD, our God.	19 Ché se è impura la terra di vostra eredità, trasferitevi nella terra di proprietà del Signore, là dove è fissato il tabernacolo del Signore, e prendetevi l'eredità in mezzo a noi; ma non ribellatevi al Signore e non ribellatevi contro di noi, costruendovi un altare come contro-altare a quello del Signore, nostro Dio!
20 When Achan, son of Zerah, violated the ban, did not wrath fall upon the entire community of Israel? Though he was but a single man, he did not perish alone for his guilt!"	20 Quando Acan, figlio di Zerach, commise infedeltà riguardo allo sterminio, non fu forse l'ira contro tutta la comunità d'Israele? Quantunque egli fosse un solo uomo, non perì solo nella sua iniquità!".
21 The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the military leaders of the Israelites: "The LORD is the God of gods.	21 Risposero allora i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribù di Manasse, parlando così ai capi delle migliaia dei figli d'Israele:
22 The LORD, the God of gods, knows and Israel shall know. If now we have acted out of rebellion or treachery against the LORD, our God,	22 "Dio, Dio, il Signore! Dio, Dio, il Signore! Egli sa e Israele deve sapere: se fu per ribellione o per infedeltà al Signore, ch'egli non ci salvi in questo giorno;
23 and if we have built an altar of our own to secede from the LORD, or to offer holocausts, grain offerings or peace offerings upon it, the LORD himself will exact the penalty.	23 se ci siamo costruiti un altare per distornarci dal Signore, o se per offrire vittime e olocausti e per compiervi sacrifici pacifici, lo stesso Signore ce ne chieda conto;
24 We did it rather out of our anxious concern lest in the future your children should say to our children: 'What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?	24 ma noi, piuttosto, abbiamo fatto questo con preoccupazione, pensando che un domani i vostri figli potessero dire ai nostri figli: "Cosa avete voi a che fare con il Signore, Dio d'Israele?
25 For the LORD has placed the Jordan as a boundary between you and us. You descendants of Reuben and Gad have no share in the LORD.' Thus your children would prevent ours from revering the LORD.	25 Il Signore ha messo un confine, il Giordano, fra noi e voi, o figli di Ruben e figli di Gad: voi non avete parte con il Signore"; e così i vostri figli potrebbero distogliere i nostri figli dal timore del Signore.
26 So we decided to guard our interests by building this altar of our own: not for holocausts or for sacrifices,	26 Perciò abbiamo detto: costruiamo un altare, non per gli olocausti, non per i sacrifici,
27 but as evidence for you on behalf of ourselves and our descendants, that we have the right to worship the LORD in his presence with our holocausts, sacrifices, and peace offerings. Now in the future your children cannot say to our children, 'You have no share in the LORD.'	27 ma quale testimonio fra noi e voi e le nostre generazioni dopo di noi, per attestare il nostro servizio al cospetto del Signore con i nostri olocausti, i nostri sacrifici e le nostre vittime pacifiche e perché un giorno i vostri figli non dicano ai nostri figli: "Voi non avete parte con il Signore!".
28 Our thought was, that if in the future they should speak thus to us or to our descendants, we could answer: 'Look at the model of the altar of the LORD which our fathers made, not for holocausts or for sacrifices, but to witness between you and us.'	28 Perciò ci siamo detti: se avverrà che un giorno parlino così a noi o alle nostre generazioni, risponderemo: Guardate la forma dell'altare del Signore che costruirono i nostri padri: non per immolare né per sacrificare; è soltanto un testimonio fra noi e voi.
29 Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD or to secede now from the LORD by building an altar for holocaust, grain offering, or sacrifice in addition to the altar of the LORD, our God, which stands before his Dwelling."	29 Lungi da noi l'intenzione di allontanarci dal Signore, di voler oggi abbandonare il Signore costruendo un altare per olocausti e sacrifici e oblazioni, separatamente dall'altare del Signore, nostro Dio, che sta innanzi al suo tabernacolo".
30 When Phinehas the priest and the princes of the community, the military leaders of the Israelites, heard what the Reubenites, the Gadites and the Manassehites had to say, they were satisfied.	30 Come il sacerdote Finees, i prìncipi della comunità e i capi delle migliaia d'Israele che erano con lui intesero le parole che pronunziarono i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e i figli di Manasse, ne rimasero soddisfatti.
31 Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, said to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the Manassehites, "Now we know that the LORD is with us. Since you have not committed this act of treachery against the LORD, you have kept the Israelites free from punishment by the LORD."	31 Disse perciò il sacerdote Finees, figlio di Eleazaro, ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e ai figli di Manasse: "Noi oggi costatiamo che è in mezzo a voi il Signore, che voi non avete commesso questa infedeltà contro il Signore, pertanto voi avete liberato i figli d'Israele dalla mano del Signore".
32 Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes returned from the Reubenites and the Gadites in the land of Gilead to the Israelites in the land of Canaan, and reported the matter to them.	32 Quindi Finees, figlio di Eleazaro, sacerdote, e i prìncipi lasciarono i figli di Ruben e di Gad e ritornarono dalla terra del Gàlaad nella terra di Canaan, ai figli d'Israele, ai quali portarono la risposta.
33 The report satisfied the Israelites, who blessed God and decided against declaring war on the Reubenites and Gadites or ravaging the land they occupied.	33 La risposta piacque ai figli d'Israele, i quali benedissero il Signore e non parlarono più di andare a combattere contro quelli, per distruggere la terra dove abitavano i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad.
34 The Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar its name as a witness among them that the LORD is God.	34 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad chiamarono l'altare "Testimonio", poiché dissero: "Esso è testimonio in mezzo a noi che il Signore è Dio".
