NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
When we had taken leave of them we set sail, made a straight run for Cos, and on the next day for Rhodes, and from there to Patara.1 Cum autem factum esset, ut navigaremus abstracti ab eis, recto cursuvenimus Cho et sequenti die Rhodum et inde Patara;
Finding a ship crossing to Phoenicia, we went on board and put out to sea.2 et cum invenissemus navemtransfretantem in Phoenicen, ascendentes navigavimus.
We caught sight of Cyprus but passed by it on our left and sailed on toward Syria and put in at Tyre where the ship was to unload cargo.3 Cum paruissemus autemCypro, et relinquentes eam ad sinistram navigabamus in Syriam et venimus Tyrum,ibi enim navis erat expositura onus.
There we sought out the disciples and stayed for a week. They kept telling Paul through the Spirit not to embark for Jerusalem.4 Inventis autem discipulis, mansimus ibidiebus septem; qui Paulo dicebant per Spiritum, ne iret Hierosolymam.
At the end of our stay we left and resumed our journey. All of them, women and children included, escorted us out of the city, and after kneeling on the beach to pray,5 Etexplicitis diebus, profecti ibamus, deducentibus nos omnibus cum uxoribus etfiliis usque foras civitatem; et positis genibus in litore orantes,
we bade farewell to one another. Then we boarded the ship, and they returned home.6 valefecimus invicem et ascendimus in navem; illi autem redierunt in sua.
We continued the voyage and came from Tyre to Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and stayed a day with them.7 Nosvero, navigatione explicita, a Tyro devenimus Ptolemaida et, salutatisfratribus, mansimus die una apud illos.
On the next day we resumed the trip and came to Caesarea, where we went to the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the Seven, and stayed with him.8 Alia autem die profecti venimus Caesaream et intrantes in domum Philippievangelistae, qui erat de septem, mansimus apud eum.
He had four virgin daughters gifted with prophecy.9 Huic autem erant filiaequattuor virgines prophetantes.
We had been there several days when a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.10 Et cum moraremur plures dies, supervenitquidam a Iudaea propheta nomine Agabus;
He came up to us, took Paul's belt, bound his own feet and hands with it, and said, "Thus says the holy Spirit: This is the way the Jews will bind the owner of this belt in Jerusalem, and they will hand him over to the Gentiles."11 is cum venisset ad nos et tulissetzonam Pauli, alligans sibi pedes et manus dixit: “ Haec dicit SpiritusSanctus: Virum, cuius est zona haec, sic alligabunt in Ierusalem Iudaei ettradent in manus gentium ”.
When we heard this, we and the local residents begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.12 Quod cum audissemus, rogabamus nos et, qui lociillius erant, ne ipse ascenderet Ierusalem.
Then Paul replied, "What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? I am prepared not only to be bound but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."13 Tunc respondit Paulus: “ Quidfacitis flentes et affligentes cor meum? Ego enim non solum alligari sed et moriin Ierusalem paratus sum propter nomen Domini Iesu ”.
Since he would not be dissuaded we let the matter rest, saying, "The Lord's will be done."14 Et cum ei suadere nonpossemus, quievimus dicentes: “ Domini voluntas fiat! ”.
After these days we made preparations for our journey, then went up to Jerusalem.15 Post dies autem istos praeparati ascendebamus Hierosolymam;
Some of the disciples from Caesarea came along to lead us to the house of Mnason, a Cypriot, a disciple of long standing, with whom we were to stay.16 venerunt autemet ex discipulis a Caesarea nobiscum adducentes apud quem hospitaremur, Mnasonemquendam Cyprium, antiquum discipulum.
When we reached Jerusalem the brothers welcomed us warmly.17 Et cum venissemus Hierosolymam, libenter exceperunt nos fratres.
The next day, Paul accompanied us on a visit to James, and all the presbyters were present.18 Sequentiautem die introibat Paulus nobiscum ad Iacobum, omnesque collecti suntpresbyteri.
He greeted them, then proceeded to tell them in detail what God had accomplished among the Gentiles through his ministry.19 Quos cum salutasset, narrabat per singula, quae fecisset Deus ingentibus per ministerium ipsius.
They praised God when they heard it but said to him, "Brother, you see how many thousands of believers there are from among the Jews, and they are all zealous observers of the law.20 At illi cum audissent, glorificabant Deumdixeruntque ei: “ Vides, frater, quot milia sint in Iudaeis, qui crediderunt,et omnes aemulatores sunt legis;
They have been informed that you are teaching all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to abandon Moses and that you are telling them not to circumcise their children or to observe their customary practices.21 audierunt autem de te quia discessionemdoceas a Moyse omnes, qui per gentes sunt, Iudaeos, dicens non deberecircumcidere eos filios suos neque secundum consuetudines ambulare.
What is to be done? They will surely hear that you have arrived.22 Quid ergoest? Utique audient te supervenisse.
So do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken a vow.23 Hoc ergo fac, quod tibi dicimus. Suntnobis viri quattuor votum habentes super se;
Take these men and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses that they may have their heads shaved. In this way everyone will know that there is nothing to the reports they have been given about you but that you yourself live in observance of the law.24 his assumptis, sanctifica te cumillis et impende pro illis, ut radant capita, et scient omnes quia, quae de teaudierunt, nihil sunt, sed ambulas et ipse custodiens legem.
As for the Gentiles who have come to believe, we sent them our decision that they abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage."25 De his autem,qui crediderunt, gentibus nos scripsimus iudicantes, ut abstineant ab idolothytoet sanguine et suffocato et fornicatione ”.
So Paul took the men, and on the next day after purifying himself together with them entered the temple to give notice of the day when the purification would be completed and the offering made for each of them.26 Tunc Paulus, assumptis viris, postera die purificatus cum illis intravit intemplum annuntians expletionem dierum purificationis, donec offerretur prounoquoque eorum oblatio.
When the seven days were nearly completed, the Jews from the province of Asia noticed him in the temple, stirred up the whole crowd, and laid hands on him,27 Dum autem septem dies consummarentur, hi, qui de Asia erant, Iudaei cumvidissent eum in templo, concitaverunt omnem turbam et iniecerunt ei manus
shouting, "Fellow Israelites, help us. This is the man who is teaching everyone everywhere against the people and the law and this place, and what is more, he has even brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this sacred place."28 clamantes: “ Viri Israelitae, adiuvate! Hic est homo, qui adversus populum etlegem et locum hunc omnes ubique docens, insuper et Graecos induxit in templumet polluit sanctum locum istum ”.
For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him and supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.29 Viderant enim Trophimum Ephesium incivitate cum ipso, quem aestimabant quoniam in templum induxisset Paulus.
The whole city was in turmoil with people rushing together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the gates were closed.30 Commotaque est civitas tota, et facta est concursio populi, et apprehendentesPaulum trahebant eum extra templum, et statim clausae sunt ianuae.
While they were trying to kill him, a report reached the cohort commander that all Jerusalem was rioting.31 Quaerentibus autem eum occidere, nuntiatum est tribuno cohortis quia totaconfunditur Ierusalem,
He immediately took soldiers and centurions and charged down on them. When they saw the commander and the soldiers they stopped beating Paul.32 qui statim, assumptis militibus et centurionibus,decucurrit ad illos; qui cum vidissent tribunum et milites, cessaveruntpercutere Paulum.
The cohort commander came forward, arrested him, and ordered him to be secured with two chains; he tried to find out who he might be and what he had done.33 Tunc accedens tribunus apprehendit eum et iussit alligaricatenis duabus et interrogabat quis esset et quid fecisset.
Some in the mob shouted one thing, others something else; so, since he was unable to ascertain the truth because of the uproar, he ordered Paul to be brought into the compound.34 Alii autem aliudclamabant in turba; et cum non posset certum cognoscere prae tumultu, iussitduci eum in castra.
When he reached the steps, he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob,35 Et cum venisset ad gradus, contigit ut portaretur amilitibus propter vim turbae;
for a crowd of people followed and shouted, "Away with him!"36 sequebatur enim multitudo populi clamantes: “Tolle eum! ”.
Just as Paul was about to be taken into the compound, he said to the cohort commander, "May I say something to you?" He replied, "Do you speak Greek?37 Et cum coepisset induci in castra, Paulus dicit tribuno: “ Si licet mihiloqui aliquid ad te? ”. Qui dixit: “ Graece nosti?
So then you are not the Egyptian who started a revolt some time ago and led the four thousand assassins into the desert?"38 Nonne tu es Aegyptius,qui ante hos dies tumultum concitasti et eduxisti in desertum quattuor miliavirorum sicariorum? ”.
Paul answered, "I am a Jew, of Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city; I request you to permit me to speak to the people."39 Et dixit Paulus: “ Ego homo sum quidem Iudaeus aTarso Ciliciae, non ignotae civitatis municeps; rogo autem te, permitte mihiloqui ad populum ”.
When he had given his permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned with his hand to the people; and when all was quiet he addressed them in Hebrew.40 Et cum ille permisisset, Paulus stans in gradibusannuit manu ad plebem et, magno silentio facto, allocutus est Hebraea linguadicens:
