1 The LORD said to Moses,	1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
2 "Avenge the Israelites on the Midianites, and then you shall be taken to your people."	2 "Accomplis la vengeance des Israélites sur les Madianites. Ensuite tu seras réuni aux tiens."
3 So Moses told the people, "Select men from your midst and arm them for war, to attack the Midianites and execute the LORD'S vengeance on them.	3 Moïse parla ainsi au peuple: "Que certains d'entre vous s'arment pour la campagne de Yahvécontre Madiân, pour payer à Madiân le salaire de la vengeance de Yahvé.
4 From each of the tribes of Israel you shall send a band of one thousand men to war."	4 Vous mettrez en campagne mille hommes pour chacune des tribus d'Israël."
5 From the clans of Israel, therefore, a thousand men of each tribe were levied, so that there were twelve thousand men armed for war.	5 Les milliers d'Israël fournirent, à raison d'un millier par tribu, 12.000 hommes armés pour lacampagne.
6 Moses sent them out on the campaign, a thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest for the campaign, who had with him the sacred vessels and the trumpets for sounding the alarm.	6 Moïse les mit en campagne, un millier par tribu, et leur joignit Pinhas, fils d'Eléazar le prêtre,porteur des objets sacrés et des trompettes pour les acclamations.
7 They waged war against the Midianites, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and killed every male among them.	7 Ils firent campagne contre Madiân, comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné à Moïse, et tuèrent tous lesmâles.
8 Besides those slain in battle, they killed the five Midianite kings: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba; and they also executed Balaam, son of Beor, with the sword.	8 En outre, ils tuèrent les rois de Madiân, Evi, Réqem, Cur, Hur et Réba, cinq rois madianites; ilspassèrent aussi au fil de l'épée Balaam, fils de Béor.
9 But the Israelites kept the women of the Midianites with their little ones as captives, and all their herds and flocks and wealth as spoil,	9 Les Israélites emmenèrent captives les femmes des Madianites avec leurs petits enfants, ilsrazzièrent tout leur bétail, tous leurs troupeaux et tous leurs biens.
10 while they set on fire all the towns where they had settled and all their encampments.	10 Ils mirent le feu aux villes qu'ils habitaient ainsi qu'à tous leurs campements.
11 Then they took all the booty, with the people and beasts they had captured, and brought the captives, together with the spoils and booty,	11 Puis, prenant tout leur butin, tout ce qu'ils avaient capturé, bêtes et gens,
12 to Moses and the priest Eleazar and to the Israelite community at their camp on the plains of Moab, along the Jericho stretch of the Jordan.	12 ils amenèrent captifs, prises et butin à Moïse, à Eléazar le prêtre et à toute la communauté desIsraélites, jusqu'au camp, aux Steppes de Moab qui se trouvent près du Jourdain vers Jéricho.
13 When Moses and the priest Eleazar, with all the princes of the community, went outside the camp to meet them,	13 Moïse, Eléazar le prêtre et tous les princes de la communauté sortirent du camp à leur rencontre.
14 Moses became angry with the officers of the army, the clan and company commanders, who were returning from combat.	14 Moïse s'emporta contre les commandants des forces, chefs de milliers et chefs de centaines, quirevenaient de cette expédition guerrière.
15 "So you have spared all the women!" he exclaimed.	15 Il leur dit: "Pourquoi avez-vous laissé la vie à toutes les femmes?
16 "Why, they are the very ones who on Balaam's advice prompted the unfaithfulness of the Israelites toward the LORD in the Peor affair, which began the slaughter of the LORD'S community.	16 Ce sont elles qui, sur les conseils de Balaam, ont été pour les Israélites une cause d'infidélité àYahvé dans l'affaire de Péor: d'où le fléau qui a sévi sur la communauté de Yahvé.
17 Slay, therefore, every male child and every woman who has had intercourse with a man.	17 Tuez donc tous les enfants mâles. Tuez aussi toutes les femmes qui ont connu un homme enpartageant sa couche.
18 But you may spare and keep for yourselves all girls who had no intercourse with a man.	18 Ne laissez la vie qu'aux petites filles qui n'ont pas partagé la couche d'un homme, et qu'ellessoient à vous.
19 "Moreover, you shall stay outside the camp for seven days, and those of you who have slain anyone or touched anyone slain in battle shall purify yourselves on the third and on the seventh day. This applies both to you and to your captives.	19 Quant à vous, campez durant sept jours hors du camp, vous tous qui avez tué quelqu'un outouché un cadavre. Purifiez-vous, vous et vos prisonniers, le troisième et le septième jour;
20 You shall also purify every article of cloth, leather, goats' hair, or wood."	20 purifiez aussi tous les vêtements, tous les objets en peau, tous les tissus en poil de chèvre, tousles objets en bois."
21 Eleazar the priest told the soldiers who had returned from combat: "This is what the law, as prescribed by the LORD to Moses, ordains:	21 Eléazar le prêtre dit aux combattants qui revenaient de cette campagne: "Voici un article de laLoi que Yahvé a prescrite à Moïse.
22 Whatever can stand fire, such as gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,	22 Toutefois l'or, l'argent, le bronze, le fer, l'étain, le plomb,
23 you shall put into the fire, that it may become clean; however, it must also be purified with lustral water. But whatever cannot stand fire you shall put into the water.	23 tout ce qui peut aller au feu, vous le ferez passer par le feu et cela sera pur; mais c'est par leseaux lustrales que cela sera purifié. Et tout ce qui ne peut aller au feu vous le ferez passer par l'eau."
24 On the seventh day you shall wash your clothes, and then you will again be clean. After that you may enter the camp."	24 Vous laverez vos vêtements le septième jour et vous serez purs. Vous pourrez ensuite rentrer aucamp.
25 The LORD said to Moses:	25 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
26 "With the help of the priest Eleazar and of the heads of the ancestral houses, count up all the human captives and the beasts that have been taken;	26 "Avec Eléazar le prêtre et les chefs de famille de la communauté, fais le compte des prises etdes captifs, gens et bêtes.
27 then divide them evenly, giving half to those who took active part in the war by going out to combat, and half to the rest of the community.	27 Puis tu partageras les prises, par moitié, entre les combattants qui ont fait la campagne etl'ensemble de la communauté.
28 You shall levy a tax for the LORD on the warriors who went out to combat: one out of every five hundred persons, oxen, asses and sheep	28 Comme redevance pour Yahvé, tu prélèveras, sur la part des combattants qui ont fait lacampagne, un sur 500 des gens, du gros bétail, des ânes et du petit bétail.
29 in their half of the spoil you shall turn over to the priest Eleazar as a contribution to the LORD.	29 Tu prendras cela sur la moitié qui leur revient, et tu le donneras à Eléazar le prêtre, commeprélèvement pour Yahvé.
30 From the Israelites' half you shall take one out of every fifty persons, and the same from the different beasts, oxen, asses and sheep, and give them to the Levites, who have charge of the LORD'S Dwelling."	30 Sur la moitié qui revient aux Israélites tu prendras un sur 50 des gens, du gros bétail, des ânes etdu petit bétail, de toutes les bêtes, et tu le donneras aux Lévites qui assument la charge de la Demeure deYahvé."
31 So Moses and the priest Eleazar did this, as the LORD had commanded Moses.	31 Moïse et Eléazar le prêtre firent comme Yahvé l'avait commandé à Moïse.
32 This booty, what was left of the loot which the soldiers had taken, amounted to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,	32 Or les prises, le reste du butin que la troupe partie en campagne avait razzié, se montaient àmille têtes de petit bétail,
33 seventy-two thousand oxen,	33 72.000 têtes de gros bétail,
34 sixty-one thousand asses,	34 61.000 ânes,
35 and thirty-two thousand girls who were still virgins.	35 et, en fait de gens, de femmes n'ayant pas partagé la couche d'un homme, mille personnes entout.
36 The half that fell to those who had gone out to combat was: three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	36 La moitié en fut assignée à ceux qui avaient fait campagne, soit 337.500 têtes de petit bétail,
37 of which six hundred and seventy-five fell as tax to the LORD;	37 dont 675 en redevance pour Yahvé,
38 thirty-six thousand oxen, of which seventy-two fell as tax to the LORD;	38 36.000 têtes de gros bétail, dont 72 en redevance pour Yahvé,
39 thirty thousand five hundred asses, of which sixty-one fell as tax to the LORD;	39 30.500 ânes, dont 61 en redevance pour Yahvé,
40 and sixteen thousand persons, of whom thirty-two fell as tax to the LORD.	40 et 16.000 personnes, dont 32 en redevance pour Yahvé.
41 The taxes contributed to the LORD, Moses gave to the priest Eleazar, as the LORD had commanded him.	41 Moïse donna à Eléazar le prêtre la redevance prélevée pour Yahvé, comme Yahvé l'avaitordonné à Moïse.
42 The half for the other Israelites, which fell to the community when Moses had taken it from the soldiers, was:	42 Quant à la moitié qui revenait aux Israélites, et que Moïse avait séparée de celle descombattants,
43 three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	43 cette moitié, part de la communauté, se montait à 337.500 têtes de petit bétail,
44 thirty-six thousand oxen,	44 36.000 têtes de gros bétail,
45 thirty thousand five hundred asses,	45 30.500 ânes
46 and sixteen thousand persons.	46 et 16.000 personnes.
47 From this, the Israelites' share, Moses, as the LORD had ordered, took one out of every fifty, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites, who had charge of the LORD'S Dwelling.	47 Sur cette moitié, part des Israélites, Moïse prit un sur 50 des gens et des bêtes et il les donna auxLévites qui assumaient la charge de la Demeure de Yahvé, comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné à Moïse.
48 Then the officers who had been clan and company commanders of the army came up to Moses	48 Les commandants des milliers qui avaient fait la campagne, chefs de milliers et chefs decentaines, vinrent trouver Moïse
49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted up the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.	49 et lui dirent: "Tes serviteurs ont fait le compte des combattants dont ils disposaient: il n'enmanque aucun.
50 So, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD, each of us will bring as an offering to the LORD some gold article he has picked up, such as an anklet, a bracelet, a ring, an earring, or a necklace."	50 Aussi apportons-nous chacun en offrande à Yahvé ce que nous avons trouvé en fait d'objets d'or,bracelets de bras et de poignet, bagues, boucles d'oreille, pectoraux, qui serviront pour nous d'expiation devantYahvé."
51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, all of it in well-wrought articles.	51 Moïse et Eléazar le prêtre reçurent d'eux cet or, tous ces bijoux.
52 The gold that they gave as a contribution to the LORD amounted in all to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. This was from the clan and company commanders;	52 Ce prélèvement d'or qu'ils firent pour Yahvé donna un total de 16.750 sicles, fourni par les chefsde milliers et chefs de centaines.
53 what the common soldiers had looted each one kept for himself.	53 Les combattants firent chacun leur butin.
54 Moses, then, and the priest Eleazar accepted the gold from the clan and company commanders, and put it in the meeting tent as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.	54 Mais Moïse et Eléazar le prêtre reçurent l'or des chefs de milliers et de centaines, etl'apportèrent à la Tente du Rendez-vous pour faire mémoire des Israélites devant Yahvé.
