1 The word of the LORD which came to Joel, the son of Pethuel.	1 - Parola di Dio che fu comunicata a Joele figlio di Fatuel:
2 Hear this, you elders! Pay attention, all you who dwell in the land! Has the like of this happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?	2 «Ascoltate, questo, o vecchi, porgete orecchio tutti voi, abitanti della terra, se un fatto simile è mai avvenuto ai vostri giorni o ai giorni dei padri vostri!
3 Tell it to your children, and your children to their children, and their children to the next generation.	3 Discorretene ai vostri figli e i figli vostri ai figli loro, e i figli loro all'altra generazione.
4 What the cutter left, the locust swarm has eaten; What the locust swarm left, the grasshopper has eaten; And what the grasshopper left, the devourer has eaten.	4 L'avanzo del verme lo divorò la locusta, e l'avanzo della locusta lo divorò il bruco, e l'avanzo del bruco lo divorò la ruggine.
5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep; wail, all you drinkers of wine, Because the juice of the grape will be withheld from your mouths.	5 Risvegliatevi, ubriachi, e piangete e urlate tutti voi, bevitori di vino prelibato, perchè vi è stato tolto dalla bocca.
6 For a people has invaded my land, mighty and without number; His teeth are the teeth of a lion, and his molars those of a lioness.	6 Perchè è salita sopra la mia terra una gente forte e senza numero; i suoi denti sono come i denti del leone e i suoi mascellari come quelli del lioncello.
7 He has laid waste my vine, and blighted my fig tree; He has stripped it, sheared off its bark; its branches are made white.	7 Ha ridotta la mia vigna in un deserto, ha scortecciato il mio fico, e lo ha spogliato nudo e abbattuto: i suoi rami si sono fatti tutti bianchi.
8 Lament like a virgin girt with sackcloth for the spouse of her youth.	8 Piangi, come vergine vestita a lutto, per la morte dell'uomo della sua fiorente età!
9 Abolished are offering and libation from the house of the LORD; In mourning are the priests, the ministers of the LORD.	9 Sbandito il sacrificio e la libazione dalla casa del Signore, nel duolo i sacerdoti ministri del Signore!
10 The field is ravaged, the earth mourns, Because the grain is ravaged, the must has failed, the oil languishes.	10 La campagna devastata, squallida la terra; perchè il grano s'è guastato, il vino ha fallito, e l'olio è andato a male.
11 Be appalled, you husbandmen! wail, you vinedressers! Over the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field has perished.	11 Gli agricoltori sono sgomenti, i vignaiuoli fanno grida lamentose sul frumento e sull'orzo, perchè il raccolto dei campi è perduto.
12 The vine has dried up, the fig tree is withered; The pomegranate, the date palm also, and the apple, all the trees of the field are dried up; Yes, joy has withered away from among mankind.	12 La vigna è avvizzita, il fico è intristito, il melagrano e la palma e tutte le piante della campagna seccarono, per cui è svanita la gioia dai figli degli uomini.
13 Gird yourselves and weep, O priests! wail, O ministers of the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God! The house of your God is deprived of offering and libation.	13 Cingetevi e piangete, o sacerdoti, alzate il vostro grido, o ministri dell'altare, entrate, pernottate vestiti di sacco, o ministri del mio Dio, perchè è sparita l'offerta e la libazione della casa del vostro Dio.
14 Proclaim a fast, call an assembly; Gather the elders, all who dwell in the land, Into the house of the LORD, your God, and cry to the LORD!	14 Indite il digiuno santo, convocate la radunanza, riunite gli anziani, tutti gli abitanti del paese nella casa del vostro Dio e gridate:
15 Alas, the day! for near is the day of the LORD, and it comes as ruin from the Almighty.	15 - Ahi, in quel giorno! - Perchè il giorno del Signore è vicino e verrà quale la devastazione di colui che tutto può.
16 From before our very eyes has not the food been cut off; And from the house of our God, joy and gladness?	16 Non è forse sotto gli occhi vostri che gli alimenti sono venuti a mancare, dalla casa del vostro Dio, e l'allegrezza e il gaudio?
17 The seed lies shriveled under its clods; the stores are destroyed, The barns are broken down, for the grain has failed.	17 Gli animali da lavoro sono marciti nel loro letame; i granai rovinati, in desolazione i magazzini; perchè le raccolte hanno fallito.
18 How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are bewildered! Because they have no pasturage, even the flocks of sheep have perished.	18 E il bestiame, perchè geme? perchè mugolano le mandre degli armenti? Perchè non hanno più pascoli; anche le mandre delle pecore sono perite.
19 To you, O LORD, I cry! for fire has devoured the pastures of the plain, and flame has enkindled all the trees of the field.	19 Verso di te, o Signore, io griderò; perchè un fuoco ha consunto il buono dei pascoli campestri, e una vampa ha riarso tutte le piante della contrada.
20 Even the beasts of the field cry out to you; For the streams of water are dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the plain.	20 Ma anche le bestie della campagna, come un'aiuola assetata di pioggia, alzarono anelanti lo sguardo a te; perchè si sono inaridite le sorgenti d'acqua e l'arsura ha divorato il buono dei pascoli campestri.
