The following message came to Jeremiah from the LORD:1 This is the word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, saying:
Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Write all the words I have spoken to you in a book.2 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, saying: Write thee all the words that I have spoken to thee, in a book.
For behold, the days will come, says the LORD, when I will change the lot of my people (of Israel and Judah, says the LORD), and bring them back to the land which I gave to their fathers; they shall have it as their possession.3 For behold the days come, saith the Lord, and I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Juda, saith the Lord: and I will cause them to return to the land which I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.
These are the words which the LORD spoke to Israel and to Judah:4 And these are the words that the Lord hath spoken to Israel and to Juda:
thus says the LORD: A cry of dismay we hear; fear reigns, not peace.5 For thus saith the Lord: We have heard a voice of terror : there is fear and no peace.
Inquire, and see: since when do men bear children? Why, then, do I see all these men, with their hands on their loins like women in childbirth? Why have all their faces turned deathly pale?6 Ask ye, and see if a man bear children ? why then have I seen every man with his hands on his loins, like a woman in labour, and all faces are turned yellow?
How mighty is that day-- none like it! A time of distress for Jacob, though he shall be saved from it.7 Alas, for that day is great, neither is there the like to it; and it Is the time of tribulation to Jacob, but he shall be saved out of it.
On that day, says the LORD of hosts, "I will break his yoke from off your necks and snap your bonds." Strangers shall no longer enslave them;8 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst his bands: and strangers shall no more rule over him:
instead, they shall serve the LORD, their God, and David, their king, whom I will raise up for them.9 But they shall serve the Lord their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up to them.
But you, my servant Jacob, fear not, says the LORD, be not dismayed, O Israel! Behold, I will deliver you from the far-off land, your descendants, from their land of exile; Jacob shall again find rest, shall be tranquil and undisturbed,10 Therefore fear thou not, my servant Jacob, saith the Lord, neither be dismayed, O Israel: for behold, I will save thee from a country afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity: and Jacob shall return, and be at rest, and abound with all good things, and there shall be none whom he may fear:
for I am with you, says the LORD, to deliver you. I will make an end of all the nations among which I have scattered you; but of you I will not make an end. I will chastise you as you deserve, I will not let you go unpunished.11 For I am with thee, saith the Lord, to save thee: for I will utterly consume all the nations, among which I have scattered thee: but I will not utterly consume thee: but I will chastise thee in judgment, that thou mayst not seem to thyself innocent.
For thus says the LORD: Incurable is your wound, grievous your bruise;12 For thus saith the Lord: Thy bruise is incurable, thy wound is very grievous.
There is none to plead your cause, no remedy for your running sore, no healing for you.13 There is none to judge thy judgment to bind it up : thou hast no healing medicines.
All your lovers have forgotten you, they do not seek you. I struck you as an enemy would strike, punished you cruelly;14 All thy lovers have forgotten thee, and will not seek after thee: for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with a cruel chastisement: by reason of the multitude of thy iniquities, thy sins are hardened.
Why cry out over your wound? your pain is without relief. Because of your great guilt, your numerous sins, I have done this to you.15 Why criest thou for thy affliction? thy sorrow is incurable: for the multitude of thy iniquity, and for thy hardened sins I have done these things to thee.
Yet all who devour you shall be devoured, all your enemies shall go into exile. All who plunder you shall be plundered, all who pillage you I will hand over to pillage.16 Therefore all they that devour thee shall be devoured: and all thy enemies shall be carried into captivity : and they that waste thee shall be wasted, and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey.
For I will restore you to health; of your wounds I will heal you, says the LORD. "The outcast" they have called you, "with no avenger."17 For I will close up thy scar, and will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord. Because they have called thee, O Sion, an outcast: This is she that hath none to seek after her.
Thus says the LORD: See! I will restore the tents of Jacob, his dwellings I will pity; City shall be rebuilt upon hill, and palace restored as it was.18 Thus saith the Lord: Behold I bring back the captivity of the pavilions of Jacob, and will have pity on his houses, and the city shall be built in her place, and the temple shall be found according to the order thereof.
From them will resound songs of praise, the laughter of happy men. I will make them not few, but many; they will not be tiny, for I will glorify them.19 And out of them shall come forth praise, and the voice of them that play: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be made few : and I will glorify them, and they shall not be lessened.
His sons shall be as of old, his assembly before me shall stand firm; I will punish all his oppressors.20 And their children shall be as from the beginning, and their assembly be permanent before me : and I will against all that afflict them.
His leader shall be one of his own, and his rulers shall come from his kin. When I summon him, he shall approach me; how else should one take the deadly risk of approaching me? says the LORD.21 And their leader shall be of themselves: and their prince shall come forth from the midst of them : and I will bring him near, and he shall come to me: for who is this that setteth his heart to approach to me, saith the Lord?
You shall be my people, and I will be your God.22 And you shall be my people: and I will be your God.
See, the storm of the LORD! His wrath breaks forth In a whirling storm that bursts upon the heads of the wicked.23 Behold the whirlwind of the Lord, his fury going forth, a violent storm, it shall rest upon the head of the wicked.
The anger of the LORD will not abate until he has done and fulfilled what he has determined in his heart. When the time comes, you will fully understand.24 The Lord will not turn away the wrath of his indignation, till he have executed and performed the thought o his heart: in the latter days you shall understand these things.
