1 The sluggard is like a stone in the mud; everyone hisses at his disgrace.	1 Il pigro somiglia a pietra insudiciata, chiunque fischietta sulla sua sporcizia.
2 The sluggard is like a lump of dung; whoever touches him wipes his hands.	2 Il pigro somiglia a sterco in letamaio, chi lo tocca deve scuotere la mano.
3 An unruly child is a disgrace to its father; if it be a daughter she brings him to poverty.	3 E' vergogna del padre il figlio viziato, se è una figlia, il danno è maggiore.
4 A thoughtful daughter becomes a treasure to her husband, a shameless one is her father's grief.	4 La figlia sensata trova marito, la svergognata rattrista suo padre.
5 A hussy shames her father and her husband; by both she is despised.	5 La sfacciata è vergogna per il padre e il marito, è disprezzata da entrambi.
6 Like a song in time of mourning is inopportune talk, but lashes and discipline are at all times wisdom.	6 Il discorso a sproposito è festino nel lutto, ma sferza e disciplina son saggezza in ogni tempo.
7 Teaching a fool is like gluing a broken pot, or like disturbing a man in the depths of sleep;	7 Insegnare allo stolto è come incollare cocci o svegliare chi dorme un sonno profondo.
8 He talks with a slumberer who talks with a fool, for when it is over, he will say, "What was that?"	8 Parlare allo stolto è parlare a chi dorme, alla fine dirà: "Di che si tratta?".
9 Weep over the dead man, for his light has gone out; weep over the fool, for sense has left him.	9 Piangi sul morto, che ha perso la luce, compiangi lo stolto, perché ha perso il giudizio:
10 Weep but a little over the dead man, for he is at rest; but worse than death is the life of a fool.	10 è meno triste piangere il morto che ora riposa, perché la vita dello stolto è peggio della morte;
11 Seven days of mourning for the dead, but for the wicked fool a whole lifetime.	11 per il morto il lutto dura sette giorni, per lo stolto e l'empio tutta la vita.
12 Speak but seldom with the stupid man, be not the companion of a brute;	12 Con lo stolto non sprecare le parole, dall'insipiente evita di andare.
13 Beware of him lest you have trouble and be spattered when he shakes himself; Turn away from him and you will find rest and not be wearied by his lack of sense.	13 Guàrdati da lui per non avere fastidio, per non sporcarti quando si scuote. Sfuggi da lui e troverai la pace, non sarai importunato dalla sua stupidità.
14 What is heavier than lead, and what is its name but "Fool"?	14 Cosa è più pesante del piombo? Eppure non deve considerarsi tale lo stupido?
15 Sand and salt and an iron mass are easier to bear than a stupid man.	15 Sabbia, sale e carico di ferro, sono meno pesanti dell'insensato.
16 Masonry bonded with wooden beams is not loosened by an earthquake; Neither is a resolve constructed with careful deliberation shaken in a moment of fear.	16 La travatura ben connessa che stringe le mura non si scompagina se c'è terremoto, così un cuore saldo nella decisione ben maturata non si scoraggia nel momento critico.
17 A resolve that is backed by prudent understanding is like the polished surface of a smooth wall.	17 Un cuore sorretto da intelligenza e riflessione è un fregio intarsiato su muro intonacato.
18 Small stones lying on an open height will not remain when the wind blows; Neither can a timid resolve based on foolish plans withstand fear of any kind.	18 I ciottoli posti in alto non resistono al vento, così il cuore dello stolto, basato sulle sue idee, non resiste di fronte a qualsiasi paura.
19 One who jabs the eye brings tears: he who pierces the heart bares its feelings.	19 Chi colpisce l'occhio ne provoca le lacrime, chi colpisce il cuore ne scopre il sentimento.
20 He who throws stones at birds drives them away, and he who insults a friend breaks up the friendship.	20 Chi getta la pietra agli uccelli li caccia, chi biasima l'amico perde l'amicizia.
21 Should you draw a sword against a friend, despair not, it can be undone.	21 Se hai tirato la spada contro l'amico, non disperare, c'è sempre una via d'uscita.
22 Should you speak sharply to a friend, fear not, you can be reconciled. But a contemptuous insult, a confidence broken, or a treacherous attack will drive away any friend.	22 Se hai aperto la bocca contro l'amico, non temere, perché c'è la riconciliazione. Ma oltraggio, superbia, segreto svelato e tradimento mettono in fuga l'amico.
23 Make fast friends with a man while he is poor; thus will you enjoy his prosperity with him. In time of trouble remain true to him, so as to share in his inheritance when it comes.	23 Conquista la fiducia del prossimo quando ha bisogno, per averne profitto quando sta bene. Nella sua disgrazia restagli vicino, per essergli compagno nella sua eredità.
24 Before flames burst forth an oven smokes; so does abuse come before bloodshed.	24 Vapore e fumo nel camino prima del fuoco, così gli insulti precedono il sangue.
25 From a friend in need of support no one need hide in shame;	25 Non mi vergognerò a difendere l'amico, né mi nasconderò dalla sua presenza;
26 But from him who brings harm to his friend all will stand aloof who hear of it.	26 se poi mi capita un guaio a causa sua, chi lo sentirà si guarderà da lui.
27 Who will set a guard over my mouth, and upon my lips an effective seal, That I may not fail through them, that my tongue may not destroy me?	27 Chi porrà una guardia alla mia bocca, la discrezione a sigillo delle mie labbra, perché non cada a causa loro e la mia lingua non mi mandi in rovina?
