Proverbs 25

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 These also are proverbs of Solomon. The men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, transmitted them.	1 Voici encore des proverbes de Salomon, que transcrivirent les gens d'Ezéchias, roi de Juda.
2 God has glory in what he conceals, kings have glory in what they fathom.	2 C'est la gloire de Dieu de celer une chose, c'est la gloire des rois de la scruter.
3 As the heavens in height, and the earth in depth, the heart of kings is unfathomable.	3 Les cieux, par leur hauteur, la terre, par sa profondeur, et le coeur des rois sont insondables.
4 Remove the dross from silver, and it comes forth perfectly purified;	4 Ote de l'argent les scories, il en sortira totalement purifié;
5 Remove the wicked from the presence of the king, and his throne is made firm through righteousness.	5 ôte le méchant de la présence du roi, et sur la justice s'affermira son trône.
6 Claim no honor in the king's presence, nor occupy the place of great men;	6 En face du roi, ne prends pas de grands airs, ne te mets à la place des grands;
7 For it is better that you be told, "Come up closer!" than that you be humbled before the prince.	7 car mieux vaut qu'on te dise: "Monte ici!" que d'être abaissé en présence du prince. Ce que tesyeux ont vu,
8 What your eyes have seen bring not forth hastily against an opponent; For what will you do later on when your neighbor puts you to shame?	8 ne le produis pas trop vite au procès, car que feras-tu à la fin si ton prochain te confond?
9 Discuss your case with your neighbor, but another man's secret do not disclose;	9 Avec ton prochain vide ta querelle, mais sans révéler le secret d'autrui,
10 Lest, hearing it, he reproach you, and your ill repute cease not.	10 de crainte que celui qui entend ne te bafoue et que ta diffamation soit sans retour.
11 Like golden apples in silver settings are words spoken at the proper time.	11 Des pommes d'or avec des ciselures d'argent, telle est une parole dite à propos.
12 Like a golden earring, or a necklace of fine gold, is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.	12 Un anneau d'or, un joyau d'or fin, telle une sage réprimande à l'oreille attentive.
13 Like the coolness of snow in the heat of the harvest is a faithful messenger for the one who sends him. (He refreshes the soul of his master.)	13 La fraîcheur de la neige au jour de la moisson, tel est un messager fidèle: il réconforte l'âme deson maître.
14 Like clouds and wind when no rain follows is the man who boastfully promises what he never gives.	14 Nuages et vent, mais point de pluie! tel est l'homme qui promet royalement, mais ne tient pas.
15 By patience is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.	15 Par la patience un juge se laisse fléchir, la langue douce broie les os.
16 If you find honey, eat only what you need, lest you become glutted with it and vomit it up.	16 As-tu trouvé du miel? Manges-en à ta faim; garde-toi de t'en gorger, tu le vomirais.
17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he have more than enough of you, and hate you.	17 Dans la maison du prochain, fais-toi rare, de crainte que, fatigué de toi, il ne te prenne engrippe.
18 Like a club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow, is the man who bears false witness against his neighbor.	18 Une massue, une épée, une flèche aiguë: tel est l'homme qui porte un faux témoignage contreson prochain.
19 Like an infected tooth or an unsteady foot is (dependence on) a faithless man in time of trouble.	19 Dent gâtée, pied boiteux: le traître en qui l'on se confie au jour du malheur,
20 Like a moth in clothing, or a maggot in wood, sorrow gnaws at the human heart.	20 autant ôter son manteau par un temps glacial. C'est mettre du vinaigre sur du nitre que dechanter des chansons à un coeur affligé.
21 If your enemy be hungry, give him food to eat, if he be thirsty, give him to drink;	21 Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui à manger, s'il a soif, donne-lui à boire,
22 For live coals you will heap on his head, and the LORD will vindicate you.	22 c'est amasser des charbons sur sa tête et Yahvé te le revaudra.
23 The north wind brings rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.	23 L'aquilon engendre la pluie, la langue dissimulatrice un visage irrité.
24 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than in a roomy house with a quarrelsome woman.	24 Mieux vaut habiter à l'angle d'un toit que faire maison commune avec une femme querelleuse.
25 Like cool water to one faint from thirst is good news from a far country.	25 De l'eau fraîche pour une gorge altérée: telle est une bonne nouvelle venant d'un pays lointain.
26 Like a troubled fountain or a polluted spring is a just man who gives way before the wicked.	26 Fontaine piétinée, source souillée: tel est un juste tremblant devant un méchant.
27 To eat too much honey is not good; nor to seek honor after honor.	27 Il n'est pas bon de manger trop de miel, ni de rechercher gloire sur gloire.
28 Like an open city with no defenses is the man with no check on his feelings.	28 Ville ouverte, sans remparts: tel un homme qui ne se possède pas.
