A psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.1 A Psalm of David. When he fled from the face of his son, Absalom.
How many are my foes, LORD! How many rise against me!2 Lord, why have those who trouble me been multiplied? Many rise up against me.
How many say of me, "God will not save that one." Selah3 Many say to my soul, “There is no salvation for him in his God.”
But you, LORD, are a shield around me; my glory, you keep my head high.4 But you, Lord, are my supporter, my glory, and the one who raises up my head.
Whenever I cried out to the LORD, I was answered from the holy mountain. Selah5 I have cried out to the Lord with my voice, and he has heard me from his holy mountain.
Whenever I lay down and slept, the LORD preserved me to rise again.6 I have slept, and I have been stupefied. But I awakened because the Lord has taken me up.
I do not fear, then, thousands of people arrayed against me on every side.7 I will not fear the thousands of people surrounding me. Rise up, Lord. Save me, my God.
Arise, LORD! Save me, my God! You will shatter the jaws of all my foes; you will break the teeth of the wicked.8 For you have struck all those who oppose me without cause. You have broken the teeth of sinners.
Safety comes from the LORD! Your blessing for your people! Selah9 Salvation is of the Lord, and your blessing is upon your people.
