1 When Simon heard that Trypho was gathering a large army to invade and ravage the land of Judah,	1 Simão foi informado de que Trifon havia organizado um poderoso exército para vir à Judéia e devastá-la.
2 and saw that the people were in dread and terror, he went up to Jerusalem. There he assembled the people	2 Vendo o povo amedrontado e espavorido, subiu a Jerusalém, convocou a população
3 and exhorted them in these words: "You know what I, my brothers, and my father's house have done for the laws and the sanctuary; what battles and disasters we have been through.	3 e dirigiu-lhe a palavra nestes termos: Vós mesmos sabeis bem o que eu, meus irmãos e a casa de meu pai temos feito pelas leis e pelo santuário, as guerras e as dificuldades que temos conhecido.
4 It was for the sake of these, for the sake of Israel, that all my brothers have perished, and I alone am left.	4 Foi assim que meus irmãos foram mortos pela causa de Israel e que fiquei eu só.
5 Far be it from me, then, to save my own life in any time of distress, for I am not better than my brothers.	5 Deus me guarde agora de poupar minha vida, quando o inimigo nos oprime, porque não sou melhor que meus irmãos!
6 Rather will I avenge my nation and the sanctuary, as well as your wives and children, for all the nations out of hatred have united to destroy us."	6 Por isso tirarei vingança de meu povo, do santuário, de vossas mulheres e filhos, uma vez que todas as nações, por seu ódio, estão coligadas para nos destruir.
7 As the people heard these words, their spirit was rekindled.	7 A estas palavras, os ânimos inflamaram-se
8 They shouted in reply: "You are our leader in place of your brothers Judas and Jonathan.	8 e todos responderam, gritando: Tu és nosso chefe em lugar de Judas e de Jônatas, teu irmão;
9 Fight our battles, and we will do everything that you tell us."	9 combate por nós e nós faremos tudo o que disseres.
10 So Simon mustered all the men able to fight, and quickly completing the walls of Jerusalem, fortified it on every side.	10 Então Simão reuniu todos os que podiam lutar, apressou-se em terminar os muros de Jerusalém e fortificou o recinto.
11 He sent Jonathan, son of Absalom, to Joppa with a large force; Jonathan drove out the occupants and remained there.	11 Enviou Jônatas, filho de Absalão, com consideráveis tropas a Jope. Jônatas expulsou seus habitantes e instalou-se em seu lugar.
12 Then Trypho moved from Ptolemais with a large army to invade the land of Judah, bringing Jonathan with him as a prisoner.	12 Todavia, Trifon saiu de Ptolemaida com um numeroso exército e se dirigiu à Judéia. Trouxe consigo Jônatas, prisioneiro.
13 But Simon pitched his camp at Adida, facing the plain.	13 Simão acampou em Adida, defronte à planície.
14 When Trypho learned that Simon had succeeded his brother Jonathan, and that he intended to fight him, he sent envoys to him with this message:	14 Informado de que Simão havia ocupado o lugar de seu irmão Jônatas e se aprontava para combatê-lo, Trifon enviou-lhe mensageiros, para dizer-lhe:
15 "We have detained your brother Jonathan on account of the money that he owed the royal treasury in connection with the offices that he held.	15 Guardamos teu irmão por causa do dinheiro que ele deve ao tesouro real em vista das funções que exercia.
16 Therefore, if you send us a hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons as hostages to guarantee that when he is set free he will not revolt against us, we will release him."	16 Envia, pois, agora, cem talentos e, para que, uma vez livre, não abandone nossa causa, manda também dois de seus filhos como reféns, e nós o deixaremos ir.
17 Although Simon knew that they were speaking deceitfully to him, he gave orders to get the money and the boys, for fear of provoking much hostility among the people, who might say	17 Simão percebeu que essas palavras eram falazes, mas mandou buscar o dinheiro e os filhos, com receio de cair na hostilidade do povo, que poderia dizer:
18 that Jonathan perished because Simon would not send Trypho the money and the boys.	18 Foi porque eu não mandei o dinheiro e os filhos, que o mataram.
19 So he sent the boys and the hundred talents; but Trypho broke his promise and would not let Jonathan go.	19 Remeteu, pois, o dinheiro e os filhos, mas Trifon quebrou a palavra e não libertou Jônatas.
20 Next he began to invade and ravage the country. His troops went around by the road that leads to Adora, but Simon and his army moved along opposite him everywhere he went.	20 Depois, pôs-se ele a caminho para entrar na Judéia e devastá-la, fazendo um rodeio pelo caminho que conduz a Adora, mas Simão se apresentava diante dele por toda parte aonde ele ia.
21 The men in the citadel sent messengers to Trypho, urging him to come to them by way of the desert, and to send them provisions.	21 Por seu lado, os ocupantes da cidadela enviaram a Trifon mensageiro pedindo-lhe que se apressasse a ir ter com eles pelo deserto e lhes fornecesse víveres.
22 Although Trypho got all his cavalry ready to go, there was a heavy fall of snow that night, and he could not go. So he left for Gilead.	22 Trifon aprontou sua cavalaria para partir naquela mesma noite, mas havia ali muita neve e ele não pôde encetar o caminho. Partiu, todavia, e foi à região de Galaad.
23 When he was approaching Baskama, he had Jonathan killed and buried there.	23 Quando chegou perto de Bascama matou Jônatas e o sepultou;

26 All Israel bewailed him with solemn lamentation, mourning over him for many days.	26 E todo o Israel chorou abundantemente e conservou o luto durante muitos dias.
27 Then Simon erected over the tomb of his father and his brothers a monument of stones, polished front and back, and raised high enough to be seen at a distance.	27 Sobre o túmulo de seu pai e de seus irmãos, Simão edificou um monumento grandioso com pedras polidas, na frente e por trás.
28 He set up seven pyramids facing one another for his father and his mother and his four brothers.	28 Ergueu ali sete pirâmides uma diante da outra, para seu pai, sua mãe e seus quatro irmãos.
29 For the pyramids he devised a setting of big columns, on which he carved suits of armor as a perpetual memorial, and next to the armor he placed carved ships, which could be seen by all who sailed the sea.	29 Colocou nelas ornamentos e cercou-as com altas colunas, sobre as quais, para eterna lembrança, colocou muitas armas e, junto a estas, navios esculpidos, que podiam ser vistos por todos os que se achavam no mar.
30 This tomb which he built at Modein is there to the present day.	30 Tal foi a sepultura que ele construiu em Modin e que existe ainda hoje.
31 Trypho dealt treacherously with the young King Antiochus. He killed him	31 Trifon, que servia o jovem rei Antíoco, com duplicidade, mandou assassiná-lo,
32 and assumed the kingship in his place, putting on the crown of Asia. Thus he brought much evil on the land.	32 reinou em seu lugar e usurpou o diadema da Ásia. Ele causou muito mal ao país.
33 Simon, on his part, built up the strongholds of Judea, strengthening their fortifications with high towers, thick walls, and gates with bars, and he stored up provisions in the fortresses.	33 Simão reergueu as praças fortes da Judéia, muniu-as com torres elevadas, com grandes muros, portas, ferrolhos, e as abarrotou de víveres.
34 Simon also sent chosen men to King Demetrius with the request that he grant the land a release from taxation, for all that Trypho did was to plunder the land.	34 Escolheu mensageiros e enviou-os ao rei Demétrio, pedindo-lhe que restabelecesse o país porque Trifon o havia submetido inteiramente à pilhagem.
35 In reply, King Demetrius sent him the following letter:	35 O rei Demétrio mandou-lhe sua resposta e escreveu-lhe nestes termos:
36 "King Demetrius sends greetings to Simon the high priest, the friend of kings, and to the elders and the Jewish people.	36 O rei Demétrio a Simão, sumo sacerdote e amigo dos reis, aos anciãos e ao povo judeu, saúde!
37 We have received the gold crown and the palm branch that you sent. We are willing to be on most peaceful terms with you and to write to our official to grant you release from tribute.	37 Recebemos a coroa de ouro e a palma que nos enviastes e estamos dispostos a concluir convosco uma paz sólida, bem como a escrever aos funcionários que vos dispensem dos impostos.
38 Whatever we have guaranteed to you remains in force, and the strongholds that you have built shall remain yours.	38 Tudo o que foi decidido em vosso favor está confirmado, e as fortalezas que construístes são vossas.
39 We remit any oversights and defaults incurred up to now, as well as the crown tax that you owe. Any other tax that may have been collected in Jerusalem shall no longer be collected there.	39 Nós vos perdoamos todos os erros e as faltas cometidas até o dia de hoje. Renunciamos à coroa que nos devíeis e, se existem ainda em Jerusalém outras dívidas a pagar, não se paguem mais.
40 If any of you are qualified for enrollment in our service, let them be enrolled. Let there be peace between us."	40 Finalmente, se existem entre vós alguns que sejam aptos a se alistarem em nossa guarda, que eles o sejam e que a paz reine entre nós.
41 Thus in the year one hundred and seventy, the yoke of the Gentiles was removed from Israel,	41 Foi no ano cento e setenta que o jugo dos gentios foi afastado de Israel,
42 and the people began to write in their records and contracts, "In the first year of Simon, high priest, governor, and leader of the Jews."	42 e que o povo começou a datar os atos e os contratos do primeiro ano de Simão, sumo sacerdote, chefe do exército e governador dos judeus.
43 In those days Simon besieged Gazara and surrounded it with troops. He made a siege machine, pushed it up against the city, and attacked and captured one of the towers.	43 Nessa época, Simão veio acampar diante de Gazara, a qual cercou. Construiu uma máquina, levou-a contra a cidade, atacou uma torre e apoderou-se dela.
44 The men who had been on the siege machine jumped down into the city and caused a great tumult there.	44 Da máquina os soldados lançaram-se na cidade, causando ali uma grande confusão,
45 The men of the city, joined by their wives and children, went up on the wall, with their garments rent, and cried out in loud voices, begging Simon to grant them peace.	45 de modo que os habitantes, com suas mulheres e seus filhos, apareceram sobre os muros, rasgaram suas vestes e pediram com altos brados a Simão que os poupasse.
46 "Do not treat us according to our evil deeds," they said, "but according to your mercy."	46 Não nos trates conforme nossas maldades, diziam eles, mas segundo a tua misericórdia.
47 So Simon came to terms with them and did not destroy them. He made them leave the city, however, and he purified the houses in which there were idols. Then he entered the city with hymns and songs of praise.	47 Simão perdoou-os e não prosseguiu o combate. Não obstante expulsou-os da cidade e mandou purificar todas as habitações onde se achavam os ídolos; em seguida, fez sua entrada ao som de hinos e de cânticos de louvor.
48 After removing from it everything that was impure, he settled there men who observed the law. He improved its fortifications and built himself a residence.	48 Fez desaparecer dali toda impureza e trouxe de volta os habitantes fiéis à lei; fortificou-a e construiu para si mesmo uma morada.
49 The men in the citadel in Jerusalem were prevented from going out into the country and back for the purchase of food; they suffered greatly from hunger, and many of them died of starvation.	49 Os ocupantes da cidadela de Jerusalém que não podiam sair para ir à cidade comprar e vender, achavam-se numa grande miséria e um bom número deles morreu de fome.
50 They finally cried out to Simon for peace, and he gave them peace. He expelled them from the citadel and cleansed it of impurities.	50 Suplicaram a Simão para que ele lhes estendesse a mão. Ele lhes deu a mão, mas os expulsou de lá e purificou a cidadela de todas as suas contaminações.
51 On the twenty-third day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, the Jews entered the citadel with shouts of jubilation, waving of palm branches, the music of harps and cymbals and lyres, and the singing of hymns and canticles, because a great enemy of Israel had been destroyed.	51 E entrou nela no dia vinte e três do segundo mês, no ano cento e setenta e um, com cânticos e palmas, harpas, címbalos, liras, hinos e louvores, porque um grande inimigo de Israel tinha sido aniquilado.
52 Simon decreed that this day should be celebrated every year with rejoicing. He also strengthened the fortifications of the temple hill alongside the citadel, and he and his companions dwelt there.	52 Ordenou também que esse dia fosse celebrado a cada ano com regozijo.
53 Seeing that his son John was now a grown man, Simon made him commander of all his soldiers, with his residence in Gazara.	53 Fortificou a montanha do templo do lado da cidadela e habitou ali com os seus.
	54 Em seguida, verificando que seu filho João se havia tornado um homem, confiou-lhe o comando de todas as tropas e este residiu em Gazara.
