NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
After this, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them; and he took Gath and its towns away from the control of the Philistines.1 And it came to pass after this, that David defeated the Philistines, and humbled them, and took away Geth, and her daughters out of the hands of the Philistines,
He also defeated Moab, and the Moabites became his subjects, paying tribute.2 And he defeated Moab, and the Moabites were made David's servants, and brought him gifts.
David then defeated Hadadezer, king of Zobah toward Hamath, when the latter was on his way to set up his victory stele at the river Euphrates.3 At that time David defeated also Adarezer king of Soba of the land of Hemath, when he went to extend his dominions as far as the river Euphrates.
David took from him twenty thousand foot soldiers, one thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen. Of the chariot horses, David hamstrung all but one hundred.4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen, and he houghed all the chariot horses, only a hundred chariots, which he reserved for himself.
The Arameans of Damascus came to the aid of Hadadezer, king of Zobah, but David also slew twenty-two thousand of their men.5 And the Syrians of Damascus came also to help Adarezer king of Soba: and David slew of them likewise two and twenty thousand men.
Then David set up garrisons in the Damascus region of Aram, and the Arameans became his subjects, paying tribute. Thus the LORD made David victorious in all his campaigns.6 And he put a garrison in Damascus, that Syria also should serve him, and bring gifts. And the Lord assisted him in all things to which he went.
David took the golden shields that were carried by Hadadezer's attendants and brought them to Jerusalem.7 And David took the golden quivers which the servants of Adarezer had, and he brought them to Jerusalem.
He likewise took away from Tibhath and Cun, cities of Hadadezer, large quantities of bronze, which Solomon later used to make the bronze sea and the pillars and the vessels of bronze.8 Likewise out of Thebath and Chun, cities of Adarezer, he brought very much brass, of which Solomon made the brazen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass.
When Tou, king of Hamath, heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer, king of Zobah,9 Now when Thou king of Hemath heard that David had defeated all the army of Adarezer king of Soba,
he sent his son Hadoram to wish King David well and to congratulate him on having waged a victorious war against Hadadezer; for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou. He also sent David gold, silver and bronze utensils of every sort.10 He sent Adoram his son to king David, to desire peace of him, and to congratulate him that he had defeated and overthrown Adarezer: for Thou was an enemy to Adarezer.
These also King David consecrated to the LORD along with all the silver and gold that he had taken from the nations: from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amalek.11 And all the vessels of gold, and silver, and brass king David consecrated to the Lord, with the silver and gold which he had taken from all the nations, as well from Edom, and from Moab, and from the sons of Ammon, as from the Philistines, and from Amalec.
Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, also slew eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.12 And Abisai the son of Sarvia slew of the Edomites in the vale of the saltpits, eighteen thousand:
He set up garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's subjects. Thus the LORD made David victorious in all his campaigns.13 And he put a garrison in Edom, that Edom should serve David: and the Lord preserved David in all things to which he went.
David reigned over all Israel and dispensed justice and right to all his people.14 So David reigned over all Israel, and executed judgment and justice among all his people.
Joab, son of Zeruiah, was in command of the army; Jehoshaphat, son of Ahilud, was herald;15 And Joab the son of Sarvia was over the army, and Josaphat the son of Ahilud recorder.
Zadok, son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech, son of Abiathar, were priests; Shavsha was scribe;16 And Sadoc the son of Achitob, and Achimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests: and Susa, scribe.
Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were the chief assistants to the king.17 And Banaias the son of Joiada was over the bands of the Cerethi, and the Phelethi: and the sons of David were chief about the king.
