μη περι τουτων αισχυνθης και μη λαβης προσωπον του αμαρτανειν1 The fol owing things you should not be ashamed of, and do not sin from fear of what others think:
περι νομου υψιστου και διαθηκης και περι κριματος δικαιωσαι τον ασεβη2 of the Law of the Most High or of the covenant, of a verdict that acquits the godless,
περι λογου κοινωνου και οδοιπορων και περι δοσεως κληρονομιας εταιρων3 of keeping accounts with a travelling companion, of settling property on your friends,
περι ακριβειας ζυγου και σταθμιων και περι κτησεως πολλων και ολιγων4 of being accurate over scales and weights, of making small and large profits,
περι διαφορου πρασεως εμπορων και περι παιδειας τεκνων πολλης και οικετη πονηρω πλευραν αιμαξαι5 of gaining from commercial transactions, of disciplining your children strictly, of lashing a wicked slavetill you draw blood.
επι γυναικι πονηρα καλον σφραγις και οπου χειρες πολλαι κλεισον6 With an interfering wife, it is as wel to use your seal, and where there are many hands, lock things up.
ο εαν παραδιδως εν αριθμω και σταθμω και δοσις και λημψις παντα εν γραφη7 Whatever stores you issue, do it by number and weight, spendings and takings, put everything inwriting.
περι παιδειας ανοητου και μωρου και εσχατογηρως κρινομενου προς νεους και εση πεπαιδευμενος αληθινως και δεδοκιμασμενος εναντι παντος ζωντος8 Do not be ashamed to correct a stupid person or a fool, or an old dotard who bickers with youngpeople. Then you wil show yourself real y educated and win the approval of everyone.
θυγατηρ πατρι αποκρυφος αγρυπνια και η μεριμνα αυτης αφιστα υπνον εν νεοτητι αυτης μηποτε παρακμαση και συνωκηκυια μηποτε μισηθη9 Unknown to her, a daughter keeps her father awake, the worry she gives him drives away his sleep: inher youth, in case she never marries, married, in case she should be disliked,
εν παρθενια μηποτε βεβηλωθη και εν τοις πατρικοις αυτης εγκυος γενηται μετα ανδρος ουσα μηποτε παραβη και συνωκηκυια μηποτε στειρωθη10 as a virgin, in case she should be defiled and found with child in her father's house, having a husband,in case she goes astray, married, in case she should be sterile!
Keep a sharp look-out that she does not make you the laughing-stock ofyour enemies, the talk of the town, the object of common gossip, and put you to public shame.
παντι ανθρωπω μη εμβλεπε εν καλλει και εν μεσω γυναικων μη συνεδρευε12 Do not stare at any man for his good looks, do not sit down with women;
απο γαρ ιματιων εκπορευεται σης και απο γυναικος πονηρια γυναικος13 for moth comes out of clothes, and woman's spite out of woman.
κρεισσων πονηρια ανδρος η αγαθοποιος γυνη και γυνη καταισχυνουσα εις ονειδισμον14 Better a man's spite than a woman's kindness: women give rise to shame and reproach.
μνησθησομαι δη τα εργα κυριου και α εορακα εκδιηγησομαι εν λογοις κυριου τα εργα αυτου15 Next, I shal remind you of the works of the Lord, and tel of what I have seen. By the words of the Lordhis works come into being and all creation obeys his wil .
ηλιος φωτιζων κατα παν επεβλεψεν και της δοξης κυριου πληρες το εργον αυτου16 The shining sun looks down on al things, and the work of the Lord is full of his glory.
ουκ εξεποιησεν τοις αγιοις κυριου εκδιηγησασθαι παντα τα θαυμασια αυτου α εστερεωσεν κυριος ο παντοκρατωρ στηριχθηναι εν δοξη αυτου το παν17 The Lord has not granted the Holy Ones the power to tell of all his marvels which the Almighty Lordhas solidly constructed for the universe to stand firm in his glory.
αβυσσον και καρδιαν εξιχνευσεν και εν πανουργευμασιν αυτων διενοηθη εγνω γαρ ο υψιστος πασαν ειδησιν και ενεβλεψεν εις σημειον αιωνος18 He has fathomed both the abyss and the human heart and seen into their devious ways; for the MostHigh knows all there is to know and sees the signs of the times.
απαγγελλων τα παρεληλυθοτα και τα εσομενα και αποκαλυπτων ιχνη αποκρυφων19 He declares what is past and what wil be, and reveals the trend of hidden things.
ου παρηλθεν αυτον παν διανοημα ουκ εκρυβη απ' αυτου ουδε εις λογος20 Not a thought escapes him, not a single word is hidden from him.
τα μεγαλεια της σοφιας αυτου εκοσμησεν ως εστιν προ του αιωνος και εις τον αιωνα ουτε προσετεθη ουτε ηλαττωθη και ου προσεδεηθη ουδενος συμβουλου21 He has embellished the magnificent works of his wisdom, he is from everlasting to everlasting, nothingcan be added to him, nothing taken away, he needs no one's advice.
ως παντα τα εργα αυτου επιθυμητα και ως σπινθηρος εστιν θεωρησαι22 How lovely, all his works, how dazzling to the eye!
παντα ταυτα ζη και μενει εις τον αιωνα εν πασαις χρειαις και παντα υπακουει23 They all live and last for ever, and, whatever the circumstances, al obey.
παντα δισσα εν κατεναντι του ενος και ουκ εποιησεν ουδεν ελλειπον24 Al things go in pairs, by opposites, he has not made anything imperfect:
εν του ενος εστερεωσεν τα αγαθα και τις πλησθησεται ορων δοξαν αυτου25 one thing complements the excel ence of another. Who could ever grow tired of gazing at his glory?
