LXXNEW JERUSALEM
ο δε κυριος απεστησεν τον υπνον απο του βασιλεως την νυκτα εκεινην και ειπεν τω διδασκαλω αυτου εισφερειν γραμματα μνημοσυνα των ημερων αναγινωσκειν αυτω1 That night the king could not sleep; he called for the Record Book, or Annals, to be brought and read tohim.
ευρεν δε τα γραμματα τα γραφεντα περι μαρδοχαιου ως απηγγειλεν τω βασιλει περι των δυο ευνουχων του βασιλεως εν τω φυλασσειν αυτους και ζητησαι επιβαλειν τας χειρας αρταξερξη2 They contained an account of how Mordecai had denounced Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king'seunuchs serving as Guards of the Threshold, who had plotted to assassinate King Ahasuerus.
ειπεν δε ο βασιλευς τινα δοξαν η χαριν εποιησαμεν τω μαρδοχαιω και ειπαν οι διακονοι του βασιλεως ουκ εποιησας αυτω ουδεν3 'And what honour and dignity', the king asked, 'was conferred on Mordecai for this?' 'Nothing has beendone for him,' the gentlemen-in-waiting replied.
εν δε τω πυνθανεσθαι τον βασιλεα περι της ευνοιας μαρδοχαιου ιδου αμαν εν τη αυλη ειπεν δε ο βασιλευς τις εν τη αυλη ο δε αμαν εισηλθεν ειπειν τω βασιλει κρεμασαι τον μαρδοχαιον επι τω ξυλω ω ητοιμασεν4 The king then said, 'Who is outside in the antechamber?' Haman had, that very moment, entered theouter antechamber of the private apartments, to ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on the gal ows which hehad just put up for the purpose.
και ειπαν οι διακονοι του βασιλεως ιδου αμαν εστηκεν εν τη αυλη και ειπεν ο βασιλευς καλεσατε αυτον5 So the king's gentlemen-in-waiting replied, 'It is Haman out in the antechamber.' 'Bring him in,' the kingsaid,
ειπεν δε ο βασιλευς τω αμαν τι ποιησω τω ανθρωπω ον εγω θελω δοξασαι ειπεν δε εν εαυτω αμαν τινα θελει ο βασιλευς δοξασαι ει μη εμε6 and, as soon as Haman came in, went on to ask, 'What is the right way to treat a man whom the kingwishes to honour?' 'Whom', thought Haman, 'would the king wish to honour, if not me?'
ειπεν δε προς τον βασιλεα ανθρωπον ον ο βασιλευς θελει δοξασαι7 So he replied, 'If the king wishes to honour someone,
ενεγκατωσαν οι παιδες του βασιλεως στολην βυσσινην ην ο βασιλευς περιβαλλεται και ιππον εφ' ον ο βασιλευς επιβαινει8 royal robes should be brought from the king's wardrobe, and a horse from the king's stable, sporting aroyal diadem on its head.
και δοτω ενι των φιλων του βασιλεως των ενδοξων και στολισατω τον ανθρωπον ον ο βασιλευς αγαπα και αναβιβασατω αυτον επι τον ιππον και κηρυσσετω δια της πλατειας της πολεως λεγων ουτως εσται παντι ανθρωπω ον ο βασιλευς δοξαζει9 The robes and horse should be entrusted to one of the noblest of the king's officers-of-state, who shouldthen array the man whom the king wishes to honour and lead him on horseback through the city square, proclaiming before him: "This is the way a man shall be treated whom the king wishes to honour." '
ειπεν δε ο βασιλευς τω αμαν καθως ελαλησας ουτως ποιησον τω μαρδοχαιω τω ιουδαιω τω θεραπευοντι εν τη αυλη και μη παραπεσατω σου λογος ων ελαλησας10 'Hurry,' the king said to Haman, 'take the robes and the horse, and do everything you have just said toMordecai the Jew, who works at the Chancel ery. On no account leave out anything that you have mentioned.'
ελαβεν δε αμαν την στολην και τον ιππον και εστολισεν τον μαρδοχαιον και ανεβιβασεν αυτον επι τον ιππον και διηλθεν δια της πλατειας της πολεως και εκηρυσσεν λεγων ουτως εσται παντι ανθρωπω ον ο βασιλευς θελει δοξασαι11 So taking the robes and the horse, Haman arrayed Mordecai and led him on horseback through thecity square, proclaiming before him: 'This is the way a man shal be treated whom the king wishes to honour.'
επεστρεψεν δε ο μαρδοχαιος εις την αυλην αμαν δε υπεστρεψεν εις τα ιδια λυπουμενος κατα κεφαλης12 After this Mordecai returned to the Chancel ery, while Haman went hurrying home in dejection andcovering his face.
και διηγησατο αμαν τα συμβεβηκοτα αυτω ζωσαρα τη γυναικι αυτου και τοις φιλοις και ειπαν προς αυτον οι φιλοι και η γυνη ει εκ γενους ιουδαιων μαρδοχαιος ηρξαι ταπεινουσθαι ενωπιον αυτου πεσων πεση ου μη δυνη αυτον αμυνασθαι οτι θεος ζων μετ' αυτου13 He told his wife Zeresh and al his friends what had just happened. His wife Zeresh and his friendssaid, 'You are beginning to fal , and Mordecai to rise; if he is Jewish, you will never get the better of him. Withhim against you, your fal is certain.'
ετι αυτων λαλουντων παραγινονται οι ευνουχοι επισπευδοντες τον αμαν επι τον ποτον ον ητοιμασεν εσθηρ14 While they were still talking, the king's officers arrived in a hurry to escort Haman to the banquet thatEsther was giving.
