1 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.	1 Et maintenant Israël, écoute les ordres et les commandements que je vous enseigne, pour les mettre en pratique. Ainsi vous vivrez et vous entrerez, pour le posséder, dans le pays que Yahvé le Dieu de vos pères vous donne.
2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.	2 Vous n’ajouterez rien à ce que je vous commande et vous n’en retrancherez rien, mais vous observerez les commandements de Yahvé votre Dieu tels que je vous les donne.
3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal-peor: for all the men that followed Baal-peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.	3 Vos yeux ont vu ce que Yahvé a fait à Baal-Péor: tous ceux qui s’étaient mis à la suite du Baal-Péor, Yahvé ton Dieu les a éliminés d’entre vous.
4 But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.	4 Mais vous qui êtes restés fidèles à Yahvé votre Dieu, vous êtes tous en vie aujourd’hui.
5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.	5 Regardez, je vous ai enseigné règles et lois comme Yahvé mon Dieu me l’avait ordonné. Mettez-les en pratique dans le pays où vous entrerez et qui sera vôtre.
6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.	6 Si vous les observez, si vous les mettez en pratique, elles vous donneront une réputation de sagesse et d’intelligence chez tous les peuples qui entendront parler de ces lois. Ils diront: “Quelle grande nation! Elle seule a la sagesse et l’intelligence.”
7 For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?	7 Y a-t-il en effet une nation aussi grande et dont les dieux soient aussi proches que Yahvé notre Dieu l’est pour nous, chaque fois que nous le prions?
8 And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?	8 Y a-t-il une nation vraiment grande dont les lois et les commandements soient aussi justes que toute cette loi que je vous présente aujourd’hui?
9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;	9 Mais prenez garde! Prenez bien garde à vous, n’oubliez rien de ce que vos yeux ont vu. Conservez tout cela au fond de vous-mêmes tout au long de votre vie et répétez-le à vos fils et aux fils de vos fils.
10 Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.	10 À l’Horeb, quand tu t’es tenu en présence de Yahvé ton Dieu, Yahvé m’a dit: “Rassemble-moi le peuple pour que je lui fasse entendre mes paroles. Ils apprendront ainsi à me craindre tous les jours qu’ils vivront sur la terre et ils l’enseigneront à leurs fils.”
11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.	11 Ce jour-là, vous vous êtes approchés, vous êtes venus au pied de la montagne, et la montagne s’embrasa jusqu’au cœur même d’un ciel de ténèbres, de nuages et de tonnerre.
12 And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.	12 Alors Yahvé vous a parlé du milieu du feu; vous entendiez le son de ses paroles mais vous n’avez pas vu d’image, il n’y avait que la voix.
13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.	13 Il vous a alors révélé son Alliance, il vous a ordonné de mettre en pratique les Dix Paroles et il les a écrites sur deux tables de pierre.
14 And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.	14 C’est à ce moment-là que Yahvé m’a dit de vous transmettre ses commandements et ses lois, pour que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays où vous allez entrer pour le posséder.
15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:	15 Prenez bien garde à vous-mêmes! Vous n’avez vu aucune image le jour où Yahvé vous a parlé à l’Horeb, du milieu du feu.
16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,	16 N’allez donc pas vous perdre maintenant en vous faisant des idoles, des images, que ce soient des figures d’hommes ou de femmes,
17 The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,	17 des figures de bêtes qui vivent sur la terre, ou d’oiseaux qui volent dans les cieux,
18 The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:	18 ou de reptiles qui rampent sur le sol ou de poissons qui cheminent à travers les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.	19 Ne vous laissez pas entraîner à adorer ce que vous voyez dans le ciel: le soleil, la lune, les étoiles et toute l’armée des cieux; ne vous prosternez pas devant eux et ne les servez pas. Yahvé ton Dieu les a donnés en partage à tous les peuples qui sont sous les cieux,
20 But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.	20 mais vous, Yahvé vous a pris. Il vous a fait sortir de cet enfer qu’est l’Égypte, pour que vous soyez son peuple, son héritage, comme vous l’êtes aujourd’hui.
21 Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:	21 Lorsque Yahvé s’est mis en colère contre moi à cause de vous, il a juré que je ne traverserais pas le Jourdain et que je n’entrerais pas dans le bon pays que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne en héritage.
22 But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land.	22 Je vais donc mourir ici, je ne traverserai pas le Jourdain; mais vous, vous le passerez et ce bon pays sera vôtre.
23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.	23 Prenez garde à ne pas oublier l’Alliance que Yahvé votre Dieu a conclue avec vous. Ne vous faites aucune idole, aucune image, de tout ce que Yahvé ton Dieu t’a interdit.
24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.	24 Car Yahvé ton Dieu est un feu dévorant, c’est un Dieu jaloux.
25 When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger:	25 Quand tu auras engendré des fils et des petits-fils, quand vous aurez vieilli dans ce pays, il se pourrait que vous tourniez mal et que vous fassiez des idoles, des images. Alors, si vous faites ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé ton Dieu, si vous le mettez en colère,
26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.	26 je le dis aujourd’hui même à la face des cieux et de la terre: vous disparaîtrez rapidement de ce pays. Il doit être vôtre quand vous aurez traversé le Jourdain, mais alors vous n’y prolongerez pas vos jours et vous serez totalement détruits.
27 And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you.	27 Yahvé vous dispersera parmi les nations et vous ne serez plus qu’une poignée au milieu des peuples où Yahvé vous conduira.
28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.	28 Là, vous servirez des dieux sortis de la main des hommes, des dieux de bois et de pierre, des dieux qui ne voient pas, qui n’entendent pas, qui ne mangent pas et qui ne sentent pas.
29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.	29 Là, tu rechercheras Yahvé ton Dieu et tu le trouveras si tu le cherches de tout ton cœur et de toute ton âme.
30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;	30 Lorsque tu seras dans l’angoisse, lorsque plus tard toutes ces malédictions se seront réalisées, tu reviendras vers Yahvé ton Dieu et tu écouteras sa voix.
31 (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.	31 Car Yahvé ton Dieu est un Dieu qui pardonne. Il ne t’abandonnera pas, il ne te détruira pas, il n’oubliera jamais l’Alliance qu’il a jurée à tes pères.
32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?	32 Interroge les temps anciens, depuis le jour où Dieu créa l’homme sur la terre. Cherche d’une extrémité du ciel à l’autre: est-il jamais rien arrivé de pareil? A-t-on jamais rien entendu de semblable?
33 Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?	33 A-t-on vu un peuple rester en vie après avoir entendu du milieu du feu la voix de son Dieu, comme tu l’as entendue?
34 Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?	34 Un Dieu est-il jamais venu se choisir un peuple, l’arrachant des entrailles d’un autre peuple par des épreuves, des signes et des prodiges? Une intervention puissante et de grands coups qui sèment la terreur, c’est bien ce que Yahvé ton Dieu a fait en Égypte devant toi et pour toi.
35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.	35 Tu as vu toi-même tout cela, et tu sais maintenant que Yahvé est Dieu et qu’il n’y en a pas d’autre que lui.
36 Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he shewed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.	36 Dieu t’a fait entendre du haut du ciel sa voix pour t’en imposer, et sur la terre il t’a fait voir son grand feu: tu as entendu ses paroles du milieu du feu.
37 And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt;	37 Il l’a fait parce qu’il aimait tes pères; il a choisi leur descendance après eux et il t’a fait sortir d’Égypte par sa présence et sa grande puissance.
38 To drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.	38 Il a chassé devant toi des peuplades grandes et puissantes; il t’a fait entrer dans leur pays et te l’a alors donné en héritage.
39 Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.	39 Tu sais donc maintenant, et tu te le rappelleras: Yahvé est Dieu là-haut dans les cieux comme en bas sur la terre, il n’y en a pas d’autre.
40 Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.	40 Observe donc ses lois et ses commandements que je te donne aujourd’hui: ainsi tu seras heureux, toi et tes fils après toi, et tu resteras de longs jours sur la terre que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne.”
41 Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;	41 Moïse mit à part trois villes de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’est.
42 That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:	42 Elles devaient servir de refuge à celui qui aurait tué son prochain involontairement, sans avoir eu de haine envers lui les jours précédents. Si le meurtrier se réfugie dans l’une de ces villes, il aura la vie sauve.
43 Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.	43 Ces villes sont: Béser, dans le désert, sur le Haut-Plateau, pour la tribu de Ruben, Ramot en Galaad, pour la tribu de Gad, et Golan dans le Bashan, pour la tribu de Manassé.
44 And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:	44 Voici la loi que Moïse présenta aux Israélites.
45 These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of Egypt,	45 Ce sont les préceptes, les lois et les ordonnances que Moïse enseigna aux Israélites lors de leur sortie d’Égypte.
46 On this side Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt:	46 On était au-delà du Jourdain, dans la vallée en face de Beth-Péor, dans le pays de Sihon, roi des Amorites, qui habitait Heshbon. Moïse et les Israélites l’avaient battu à leur sortie d’Égypte,
47 And they possessed his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, which were on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;	47 et ils avaient conquis son pays avec le pays d’Og, roi du Bashan. Le territoire de ces deux rois des Amorites était au-delà du Jourdain à l’est.
48 From Aroer, which is by the bank of the river Arnon, even unto mount Sion, which is Hermon,	48 Il s’étendait depuis Aroër sur le bord du torrent de l’Arnon, jusqu’à la montagne de Siryon qui est l’Hermon.
49 And all the plain on this side Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah.	49 Il comprenait aussi toute la Araba au-delà du Jourdain à l’est, jusqu’à la mer de la Araba, au pied du Pisga.
