Deuteronomy 20

1 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.	1 Se tu uscirai fuori a battaglia contro a' tuoi nemici, e vederai li cavalieri e li carri loro, e la moltitudine dell' oste del tuo nimico la quale sia maggiore che non è tutta la tua, non avrai paura di loro; imperciò che Iddio tuo Signore sarà teco, il quale ti trasse della terra d'Egitto.
2 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,	2 Ma quando già s'appresserà la battaglia, istarà il prete dinanzi alla schiera, e in questo modo parlerà (e favellerà, dicendo) al popolo:
3 And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;	3 Odi tu, Israel; voi cominciate oggi la batta glia contro a' vostri nemici; guarda che il tuo cuore non tema (nè abbia alcuna paura); non abbiate te manza, nè date luogo a vostro nemici (che voi fug giate); non abbiate paura;
4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.	4 imperciò che Iddio vostro Signore sì è (e istà) in mezzo di voi; ed egli per voi contro i vostri nemici combatterà, acciò che d'ogni pericolo vi scampi.
5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.	5 I duchi (e quelli che guidano e reggono il popolo) grideranno per ciascuna ischiera, e diranno: chi è quello uomo il quale hae edificata (e fatta) casa nuova, e non l'hae compiuta? vada via, e si torni in casa sua, ne forse sia morto in quella battaglia, e altro vi stia in suo luogo.
6 And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.	6 Chi è quello uomo il quale hae piantata la vigna, e non l'hae ancora fatta esser comune, che sia lecito di poterne mangiare ad ogni gente? (cioè che non siasi cresciuta, ch' ella possa fare dell' uve) partasi e torni in casa sua, ne forse si muoia nella battaglia, e un altro entri e faccia il suo officio (nella vigna sua).
7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.	7 Chi è quello uomo, il quale hae giurata la moglie sua (e datole l'anello) e non l'ha ancora menata a casa sua? ancora vada e torni a casa sua, acciò che non muoia in battaglia, e poi un altro uomo la pigli (per sua moglie).
8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.	8 E dette quelle parole, poi raggiugneranno queste parole, e favelleranno al popolo: chi è quello uomo pauroso, il quale abbia il cuore timido? vada, e si torni in casa sua, acciò che non faccia (avere paura e faccia) isbigottire i cuori de' suoi fratelli, siccome egli è tutto di paura isbigottito.
9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.	9 E poi che istaranno chieti i duchi (e quelli i quali guidano l'oste) e faranno fine di favellare, ciascuno apparecchierà (e acconcerà) le sue schiere alla battaglia.
10 When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.	10 E se per alcun tempo (anderai e) appressera'ti (al luogo da combattere, cioè) ad una cittade, invitera’ la prima di pace (cioè se quegli o coloro che fossero nella detta cittade, la volessero dare pacificamente).
11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.	11 E se sarai ricevuto con pace ed apriranno le porte, tutto il popolo il quale vi fosse dentro vo glio che sia salvo (e tutta la moititudine della detta città senza impedimento alcuno); e sì ti servirà, e darà poi tributo.
12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:	12 Ma se loro non vorranno fare (pace nè) patto alcuno teco, e cominceranno la battaglia contro a te, voglio che tu la combatti fortemente.
13 And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:	13 E poi che Iddio tuo Signore te l'avrà data (e messa) nelle mani, fa che tu uccida tutti quelli i quali sono dentro, cioè maschi, colla punta del coltello,
14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.	14 fuori che le femine e i fanciulli piccolini e il bestiame e tutte l'altre cose che dentro vi sono. E tutta quanta la preda dividerai con tutti coloro i quali sono istati (teco in compagnia) nell'oste tuo, e mangerai (del bestiame e) di quello ch' avrai preso de' tuoi nemici, i quali Iddio tuo Signore (per grazia) t'avrà dato.
15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.	15 E così farai di tutte quante le cittadi, le quali ti sono di lungo, e non sono di quelle cittadi che tu dèi pigliare in possessione.
16 But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:	16 Ma di quelle cittadi, che ti saranno date (per possessione), fa che guardi che niuno ne lasci vivere;
17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:	17 ma tutti gli ucciderai colle coltella; ciò sono questi: Eteo, Amorreo, Cananeo ed Eveo e Ferezeo e Iebuseo, siccome Iddio tuo Signore ti comandò,
18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.	18 acciò che per avventura loro non v'insegnino di fare tutte le abbominazioni, le quali loro hanno adoperate (e fatte) a' loro [Iddii ], e commettiate peccato in Dio vostro Signore.
19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man's life) to employ them in the siege:	19 E quando tu avrai assediata una cittade per lungo tempo, e avra'le fatto i bastiglioni dintorno, fa che incontanente tu la combatti: e non taglierai gli arbori i quali facciano frutto da mangiare, però che colle scure non dèi guastare la contrada d'intorno (alla detta cittade); imperciò che il legno non è uomo, che possa fare crescere contra te (gente o) numero di combattitori.
20 Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.	20 Ma se legno (o arbore) vi fosse alcuno il quale non facesse frutto, e fossero salvatichi, e che sieno buoni ad altro uso (che a frutto fare), tagliali e fanne castella (edificii e trabacche) in tanta quantitade, che perseverando tu pigli la città (se posto ad oste), la quale tu vedi che sia acconcia di combattere contra di te.
