The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.1 In that day, Jesus, departing from the house, sat down beside the sea.
And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.2 And such great crowds were gathered to him that he climbed into a boat and he sat down. And the entire multitude stood on the shore.
And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;3 And he spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow seed.
And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:4 And while he was sowing, some fell beside the road, and the birds of the air came and ate it.
Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:5 Then others fell in a rocky place, where they did not have much soil. And they sprung up promptly, because they had no depth of soil.
And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.6 But when the sun rose up, they were scorched, and because they had no roots, they withered.
And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:7 Still others fell among thorns, and the thorns increased and suffocated them.
But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.8 Yet some others fell upon good soil, and they produced fruit: some one hundred fold, some sixty fold, some thirty fold.
Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.9 Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.”
And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?10 And his disciples drew near to him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”
He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.11 Responding, he said to them: “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but it has not been given to them.
For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.12 For whoever has, it shall be given to him, and he shall have in abundance. But whoever has not, even what he has shall be taken away from him.
Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.13 For this reason, I speak to them in parables: because seeing, they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:14 And so, in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, who said, ‘Hearing, you shall hear, but not understand; and seeing, you shall see, but not perceive.
For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.15 For the heart of this people has grown fat, and with their ears they hear heavily, and they have closed their eyes, lest at any time they might see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and then I would heal them.’
But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.16 But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear.
For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.17 Amen I say to you, certainly, that many of the prophets and the just desired to see what you see, and yet they did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and yet they did not hear it.
Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.18 Listen, then, to the parable of the sower.
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.19 With anyone who hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, evil comes and carries away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received the seed by the side of the road.
But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;20 Then whoever has received the seed upon a rocky place, this is one who hears the word and promptly accepts it with joy.
Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.21 But he has no root in himself, so it is only for a time; then, when tribulation and persecution occur because of the word, he promptly stumbles.
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.22 And whoever has received the seed among thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of this age and the falseness of riches suffocate the word, and he is effectively without fruit.
But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.23 Yet truly, whoever has received the seed into good soil, this is he who hears the word, and understands it, and so he bears fruit, and he produces: some a hundred fold, and another sixty fold, and another thirty fold.”
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:24 He proposed another parable to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.
But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.25 But while the men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds amid the wheat, and then went away.
But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.26 And when the plants had grown, and had produced fruit, then the weeds also appeared.
So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?27 So the servants of the Father of the family, approaching, said to him: ‘Lord, did you not sow good seed in your field? Then how is it that it has weeds?’
He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?28 And he said to them, ‘A man who is an enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Is it your will that we should go and gather them up?’
But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.29 And he said: ‘No, lest perhaps in gathering the weeds, you might also root out the wheat together with it.
Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.30 Permit both to grow until the harvest, and at the time of the harvest, I will say to the reapers: Gather first the weeds, and bind them into bundles to burn, but the wheat gather into my storehouse.’ ”
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:31 He proposed another parable to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field.
Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.32 It is, indeed, the least of all seeds, but when it has grown, it is greater than all the plants, and it becomes a tree, so much so that the birds of the air come and dwell in its branches.”
Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.33 He spoke another parable to them: “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of fine wheat flour, until it was entirely leavened.”
All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:34 All these things Jesus spoke in parables to the crowds. And he did not speak to them apart from parables,
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.35 in order to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet, saying: “I will open my mouth in parables. I will proclaim what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.”
Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.36 Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. And his disciples drew near to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;37 Responding, he said to them: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of man.
The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;38 Now the field is the world. And the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom. But the weeds are the sons of wickedness.
The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.39 So the enemy who sowed them is the devil. And truly, the harvest is the consummation of the age; while the reapers are the Angels.
As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.40 Therefore, just as weeds are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the consummation of the age.
The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;41 The Son of man shall send out his Angels, and they shall gather from his kingdom all who lead astray and those who work iniquity.
And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.42 And he shall cast them into the furnace of fire, where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.43 Then the just ones shall shine like the sun, in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.44 The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man finds it, he hides it, and, because of his joy, he goes and sells everything that he has, and he buys that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking good pearls.
Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.46 Having found one pearl of great value, he went away and sold all that he had, and he bought it.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind:47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net cast into the sea, which gathers together all kinds of fish.
Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.48 When it has been filled, drawing it out and sitting beside the shore, they selected the good into vessels, but the bad they threw away.
So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,49 So shall it be at the consummation of the age. The Angels shall go forth and separate the bad from the midst of the just.
And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.50 And they shall cast them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord.51 Have you understood all these things?” They say to him, “Yes.”
Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.52 He said to them, “Therefore, every scribe well-taught about the kingdom of heaven, is like a man, the father of a family, who offers from his storehouse both the new and the old.”
And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.53 And it happened that, when Jesus had completed these parables, he went away from there.
And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?54 And arriving in his own country, he taught them in their synagogues, so much so that they wondered and said: “How can such wisdom and power be with this one?
Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?55 Is this not the son of a workman? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers, James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Jude?
And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Therefore, from where has this one obtained all these things?”
And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country and in his own house.”
And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.58 And he did not work many miracles there, because of their unbelief.
