1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.	1 - Dissi [allora] in cuor mio: «Suvvia, nuoterò nelle delizie e godrò la felicità!». E m'accòrsi che pur questo è vanità.
2 I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?	2 Il riso reputai scipitaggine, e alla gioia dissi: «Perchè vanamente t'illudi?».
3 I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.	3 Tentai in cuor mio d'attirare la mia carne al vino, - pur gridando con sapienza il mio cuore -e d'appigliarmi a follia, fin ch'io vedessi quel ch'era meglio per gli uominie necessario a farsi sotto il sole ne' giorni di lor vita.
4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:	4 Feci opere grandiose, mi fabbricai palazzi, e piantai vigne;
5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:	5 mi feci giardini e verzieri, e ci piantai ogni sorta d'alberi[fruttiferi];
6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:	6 mi costrussi peschiere d'acquaper irrigare il bosco germogliante di piante;
7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:	7 acquistai schiavi e schiave ed ebbi servitù numerosa;[possedetti]anche armati e greggi copiosi, più di quanti furon prima di me in Gerusalemme;
8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.	8 m'ammassai argento e oroe tesori di re e di province; mi procurai cantori e cantatricie delizie d'uomini, coppe e vasi da mescere i vini.
9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.	9 E superai in ricchezze quanti furon prima di me in Gerusalemme: anche la sapienza restò con me.
10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.	10 Di tutto quello che desiderarono i miei occhi, nulla sottrassi loro, nè vietai al mio cuore di goder d'ogni gioia, e d'allietarsi di tutte le cose da me preparate; chè questa credetti esser la mia parte, fruir del mio lavoro.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.	11 Ma voltomi a [considerar] le opere tutte delle mie manie le fatiche con le quali vanamente m'ero travagliato, vidi in tutto vanità e afflizione di spirito, e come nulla v'ha di durevole sotto il sole!
12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.	12 Mi volsi [allora] a contemplar la sapienzae l'insipienza e la stoltezza.«Che cos'è mai l'uomo - dissi -perchè possa tener dietro al Re, suo creatore?».
13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.	13 E vidi che la sapienza di tanto vantaggia la stoltezza, quanto la luce differisce dalle tenebre:
14 The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.	14 il saggio ha gli occhi in capo, lo stolto cammina tra le tenebre.E[ppure] dovetti accorgermi che una stessa morte gli aspetta entrambi!
15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.	15 E dissi [allora] in cuor mio:«Se una stessa sarà la fine dello stolto e la mia, a che mi giova l'essermi maggiormente applicato alla sapienza?».E ragionando con la mia mente riconobbiche anche questa è vanità!
16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.	16 Non c'è infatti ricordanza del saggio, come non c'è dello stolto, in eterno; ma i tempi avvenire tutto ugualmente seppelliranno nell'oblio: muore il saggio allo stesso modo dello stolto!
17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.	17 Perciò mi disgustai della vita, vedendo che tutti i mali son sotto il sole, e tutto è vanità e afflizione di spirito!
18 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.	18 E odiai tutta la fatica con cui m'ero travagliato sotto il sole, che dovrò lasciare in eredità a chi verrà dopo di me.
19 And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.	19 Io non so s'egli sarà saggio o stolto, e [tuttavia] sarà padrone di tutto il mio lavoro, nel quale mi sono affaticato e affannato. E v'ha egli maggior vanità di questa?
20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.	20 Perciò smisi, e il mio cuore rinunziò a più travagliarsi sotto il sole.
21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.	21 Dopo infatti che uno ha lavoratocon sapienza, scienza e premura, a un altro, che se n'è stato ozioso, ha da lasciare i suoi acquisti. Equest'è davvero vanità e miseria grande!
22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?	22 Che vantaggio ha infatti l'uomo di tutta la sua faticae dell'affanno del suo cuore, onde si travagliò sotto il sole?
23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.	23 Son pieni di dolore e di cruccio tutti i suoi dì, e neppure la notte e' non riposa col cuore. E questo non è vanità?
24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.	24 Non è meglio [per l'uomo] mangiare e bere e procacciar benessere all'anima sua col proprio lavoro? E anche questo vien dalla mano di Dio.
25 For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?	25 Chi si satollerà e se la godrà quanto me?
26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.	26 All'uomo ch'è buono al suo cospettoIddio dà sapienza, scienza e godimento; ma al peccatore dà il travaglioe l'inutile ansia di raccogliere e ammassare, per lasciar poi [tutto ciò] a chi piace a Dio. Anche questo è vanità e inutile affanno di mente!
