KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Elihu spake moreover, and said,1 Then Elihu proceeded and said:
Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's?2 Do you think it right to say, "I am just rather than God?"
For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?3 To say, "What does it profit me; what advantage have I more than if I had sinned?"
I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.4 I have words for a reply to you and your three companions as well.
Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou.5 Look up to the skies and behold; regard the heavens high above you.
If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?6 If you sin, what injury do you do to God? Even if your offenses are many, how do you hurt him?
If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?7 If you are righteous, what do you give him, or what does he receive from your hand?
Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man.8 Your wickedness can affect only a man like yourself; and your justice only a fellow human being.
By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.9 In great oppression men cry out; they call for help because of the power of the mighty,
But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;10 Saying, "Where is God, my Maker, who has given visions in the night,
Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?11 Taught us rather than the beasts of the earth, and made us wise rather than the birds of the heavens?"
There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.12 Though thus they cry out, he answers not against the pride of the wicked.
Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.13 But it is idle to say God does not hear or that the Almighty does not take notice.
Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.14 Even though you say that you see him not, the case is before him; with trembling should you wait upon him.
But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity:15 But now that you have done otherwise, God's anger punishes, nor does he show concern that a man will die.
Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.16 Yet Job to no purpose opens his mouth, and without knowledge multiplies words.
