2 Maccabees 11

1 Not long after the, Lysias the king's protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.	1 E dopo poco tempo Lisia, procuratore del re e suo propinquo, preposito de' mercatanti, (ebbe a male e) gravemente sostenea quelle cose ch' erano intervenute (a Timoteo e a' suoi).
2 And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,	2 E avendo congregato ottanta milia uomini, con tutto lo esèrcito delli cavalieri, se ne venìa contro alli Giudei, pensando (che) presa che sarà la città per lui, farla abitacolo di Gentili,
3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:	3 e poner il templo in questo di danari, come egli avea li altri templi de' Gentili, e ciascuno anno vender il sacerdozio,
4 Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.	4 non pensando la potenza di Dio; ma con la mente sanza freno si confidava nella moltitudine dei pedoni, e nelle migliaia de' cavalli, e in ottanta elefanti ( ch' egli avea con se).
5 So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.	5 Essendo lui veramente entrato in Giudea, e approssimato a Betsura la quale era in uno luogo stretto, distante da Ierusalem per spazio di cinque stadii, combattea quella fortezza.
6 Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.	6 Quando Maccabeo, e quelli ch' erano con lui, conobbero che la fortezza si combattea, con pianto e lacrime pregavano Iddio Signore, e anco tutto il popolo insieme, che lui mandasse l'angelo suo buono alla salute d' Israel.
7 Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.	7 Dopo questo, esso Maccabeo, pigliando l' arme, confortò tutti gli altri, che dovessero insieme con lui sottomettersi al pericolo, e dar favore alli suoi fratelli.
8 And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.	8 E partendosi tutti con l'animo pronto di Ierusalem, apparve a loro uno a cavallo, vestito di bianco, che li andava dinanzi, con l'arme d'oro movendo l' asta, (come s' egli volesse percuoter gli inimici).
9 Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.	9 Allora tutti benedissero Iddio insieme, il quale li facea misericordia, e pigliorono grande animo; intanto che non solo erano preparati di trapassare gli uomini, ma le bestie ferocissime e li muri di ferro.
10 Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them	10 Andavano dunque apparecchiati, avendo il Signore del cielo, [per] misericordia di loro, in aiuto.
11 And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.	11 E con modo e impeto leonino corsero contro (e sopra) li nimici, intanto che uccisero XI milia pedoni, e mille secento cavalieri.
12 Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.	12 E tutti gli altri erano posti in fuga; e molti di loro feriti e spogliati fuggirono. E anco esso Lisia se ne fuggì con gran vergogna.
13 Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,	13 E per che (Lisia) non era insensato, considerando appo sè la diminuzione che li era stata fatta, intendendo anco li Giudei non esser da poterli vincere, però che combatteano con lo aiuto dello onnipotente Iddio, mandò loro a dire,
14 And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.	14 che li volea consentire in tutto (quello che voleano), però che le loro dimande erano giuste; e promettea ai Giudei di pacificarli con lo re, e fare che lo re li sarìa amico.
15 Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.	15 Condiscese Maccabeo alli preghi di Lisia, consigliandosi in ogni cosa che li fosse utile; e tutto quello che Maccabeo scrisse a Lisia delli Giudei, tutto concesse il re.
16 For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:	16 Però ch' era stato scritto alli Giudei per Lisia epistole, le quali contenea questa sentenza: Lisia al popolo de' Giudei salute.
17 John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.	17 Giovanni e Abesalom, li quali sono stati mandati da voi, portanto le scritture vostre, addimandavano che io terminassi quelle cose che per loro erano notificate (per vostro nome).
18 Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.	18 Tutte quelle cose adunque che si potea espedire, io le esposi al re; ed evvi stato concesso tutto quello ch' era onesto di concedere.
19 And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.	19 Se dunque voi serverete la fede nelle cose che accaderanno, tenterò da mo in avanti di esser causa di farvi molti beni.
20 But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.	20 Del resto (che s'è a trattare insieme) di ogni cosa particularmente ho notificato a quelli che mi avete mandati, e anco a quelli che io vi mando, acciò che parlino con voi, (e insieme deliberate quello a voi parerà).
21 Fare ye well. The hundred and eight and fortieth year, the four and twentieth day of the month Dioscorinthius.	21 Siate sani. Nell' anno centesimo quadragesimo ottavo, al vigesimo quarto dì di giugno.
22 Now the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:	22 La epistola del re contenea questa sentenza: lo re Antioco a Lisia fratello salute.
23 Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.	23 Essendo nostro padre transferito tra li iddii, noi volendo governare tutti quelli i quali sono nel nostro regno sanza tumulto, e aver diligenza delle cose sue,
24 We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.	24 abbiamo udito, li Giudei non aver consentito al padre [mio], che si transferiscano alli modi del vivere de' Greci, ma voler tenere le sue leggi; e per questo addimandano a noi, che li sia concesso le cose sue legittime.
25 Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.	25 Volendo adunque che anco questa gente rimanga quieta, ordiniamo e giudichiamo che li sia restituito il loro templo, acciò che possino fare secondo la consuetudine de' loro padri antichi.
26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.	26 Farai adunque bene, se tu manderai a loro, e dara'li la mano destra per fede, acciò che conosciuta la nostra volontade, rimangano di buono animo, e servino alle loro proprie utilità.
27 And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:	27 Questa era la epistola del re, mandata alli Giudei: il re Antioco al senato de' Giudei, e agli altri, salute.
28 If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.	28 Se voi siete in prosperità, così è come noi vogliamo; però che anco noi stiamo bene.
29 Menelans declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:	29 Venne a noi Menelao, dicendo che voi volete discendere alli vostri, li quali sono appresso di noi.
30 Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.	30 A quelli adunque, che passino per sino al trigesimo di del mese d' aprile, diamo la mano destra per sicurtà,
31 And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.	31 acciò che li Giudei possino usar li cibi e le leggi sue, come faceano prima; e niuno di loro per alcuno modo abbi molestia di quelle cose che per avanti sono state fatte per ignoranza.
32 I have sent also Menelans, that he may comfort you.	32 Abbiamo anco mandato Menelao, il quale vi debbi parlare, (e dichiararvi la nostra volontà).
33 Fare ye well. In the hundred forty and eighth year, and the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	33 Siate sani. Nell' anno centesimo quadragesimo ottavo, del mese di aprile al quinto decimo dì.
34 The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.	34 Mandorono anco i Romani una epistola di questo tenore: Quinto Memmio e Tito Manilio, ambasciatori de' Romani, al popolo de' Giudei salute.
35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.	35 Di quelle cose che Lisia, parente del re, vi ha concesso, etiam noi ve le concediamo.
36 But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.	36 Ma di queste cose ch' egli ha riferite al re, incontinente mandate con diligenza alcuno, conferendo fra voi, acciò conosciamo come a voi si conviene; imperò che noi andiamo in Antiochia.
37 Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.	37 Il che affrettatevi di scrivere, per che etiam noi sappiamo di cui volontà siete.
38 Farewell. This hundred and eight and fortieth year, the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	38 Abbiate bene. Nel centesimo quadragesimo ottavo anno, nel quintodecimo dì di aprile.
